Specific niche requirements underpin multidecadal range edge stability, but may introduce barriers for climate change adaptation
Aim: To investigate some of the environmental variables underpinning the past and present distribution of an ecosystem engineer near its poleward range edge. Location: >500 locations spanning >7,400Â km around Ireland. Methods: We collated past and present distribution records on a known climate change indicator, the reef-forming worm Sabellaria alveolata (Linnaeus, 1767) in a biogeographic boundary region over 182Â years (1836â2018). This included repeat sampling of 60 locations in the cooler 1950s and again in the warmer 2000s and 2010s. Using species distribution modelling, we identified some of the environmental drivers that likely underpin S. alveolata distribution towards the leading edge of its biogeographical range in Ireland. Results: Through plotting 981 records of presence and absence, we revealed a discontinuous distribution with discretely bounded sub-populations, and edges that coincide with the locations of tidal fronts. Repeat surveys of 60 locations across three time periods showed evidence of population increases, declines, local extirpation and recolonization events within the range, but no evidence of extensions beyond the previously identified distribution limits, despite decades of warming. At a regional scale, populations were relatively stable through time, but local populations in the cold Irish Sea appear highly dynamic and vulnerable to local extirpation risk. Contemporary distribution data (2013â2018) computed with modelled environmental data identified specific niche requirements which can explain the many distribution gaps, namely wave height, tidal amplitude, stratification index, then substrate type. Main conclusions: In the face of climate warming, such specific niche requirements can create environmental barriers that may prevent species from extending beyond their leading edges. These boundaries may limit a speciesâ capacity to redistribute in response to global environmental change
Based on the observation that the school environment is constantly seeking change, the practice of the project has been conducted as a mean of developing the motivation and autonomy of students. The main problems encountered are to organise a sustainable approach in a changing context and to offer a project that consider both institutional injunctions and possibilities on the field. Since all professional reflection benefits from being based on theories and scientific approaches, a process based on constructivism, pragmatism and systemic thinking was adopted. It relies on a comprehensive methodology using on one hand, surveys and interviews and on the other hand, heuristic schematisation based on triadic modelling. Activity theory and adaptation of Engeström's model allow us to study the elements at stake and their contradictions, during the collaborative construction of a device called DISCODU, centred on the collection of information about tourism in Spanish-speaking countries, its organisation and its implementation on a digital medium accessible online. This study shows the benefits of these actions for both students and school community, but it also highlights, for the teacher who becomes a manager, the need for transdisciplinarity as well as for information culture, and, for the school, the priority that must be given to organisation as opposed to simply technical means. This work finally reveals the interest of schematisation and the need to theorise this qualitative method, which allows for a clear presentation, a reasoned elaboration and an adaptation taking into account sustainability. Note technique.
Ce document de cadrage sâinspire largement du guide de lecture rĂ©digĂ© par le groupe de travail ICG-POSH (Intersessional Correspondence Group on the implementation and follow up of measures for the protection and conservation of species and habitats) dâOSPAR [documents (ospar.org)]
The Habitats Directive (92/43/CEE) is one of the political pillars of the European Union in terms of marine biodiversity. Under the directive, each Member State must report periodically the conservation status and evolution trends of species and habitats of Community interest. This conservation status of habitats is characterised by four parameters: habitat range, habitat area, habitat structure and functions, and future prospects according to the pressures acting on the habitat and the management measures put in place. In previous reports, the assessment of the 1170-Reefs habitat considered only partially the geological and biogenic reefs of the deep sea (bathyal). To overcome such a knowledge gap, a scientific review was carried out according to the four evaluation parameters in order to advance an overall assessment of the bathyal Reefs for the French Atlantic and Mediterranean marine biogeographical regions. The overall assessment of the conservation status of bathyal Reefs is « unfavourableinadequate » in the Atlantic and « unfavourable-bad » in the Mediterranean. Although management measures are in place or planned, they are not sufficient to ensure a favourable conservation status for the bathyal Reefs in the long term.
