On prospective teachers' evaluations of freshman students' written arguments
n this paper we present a qualitative study in which we analyse how a group of prospective mathematics teachers evaluates written arguments produced by freshman students solving a problem involving graphs. The prospective teachers were attending a course of Mathematics Education for the second year of a master degree in Mathematics. In particular we focus on how prospective teachers in their evaluations look at mathematical content, language, and argumentative structure. The outcomes show, on the one hand, a certain attention to some linguistic aspects, on the other hand, a greater attention to the content than to the argumentative structure of the texts. We suggest that prospective teachers' models for linguistic education are often the standard ones, based on conformity to grammar or style rather than on adequacy with respect to goals
Production and characterization of CSSI003 (2961) human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) carrying a novel puntiform mutation in RAI1 gene, Causative of Smith–Magenis syndrome
Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS) is a complex genetic disorder characterized by developmental delay, behavioural
problems and circadian rhythm dysregulation. About 90% of SMS cases are due to a 17p11.2 deletion containing
retinoic acid induced1 (RAI1) gene, 10% are due to heterozygousmutations affecting RAI1 coding region.
Little is known about RAI1 role
Psychosocial assessment of families caring for a child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, epilepsy or asthma: Psychosocial risk as network of interacting symptoms
The purpose of this study is to assess psychosocial risk across several pediatric medical conditions and test the hypothesis that different severe or chronic pediatric illnesses are characterized by disease specific enhanced psychosocial risk and that risk is driven by disease specific connectivity and interdependencies among various domains of psychosocial function using the Psychosocial Assessment Tool (PAT). In a multicenter prospective cohort study of 195 patients, aged 5-12, 90 diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), 42 with epilepsy and 63 with asthma, parents completed the PAT2.0 or the PAT2.0 generic version. Multivariate analysis was performed with disease as factor and age as covariate. Graph theory and network analysis was employed to study the connectivity and interdependencies among subscales of the PAT while data-driven cluster analysis was used to test whether common patterns of risk exist among the various diseases. Using a network modelling approach analysis, we observed unique patterns of interconnected domains of psychosocial factors. Each pathology was characterized by different interdependencies among the most central and most connected domains. Furthermore, data-driven cluster analysis resulted in two clusters: Patients with ALL (89%) mostly belonged to cluster 1, while patients with epilepsy and asthma belonged primarily to cluster 2 (83% and 82% respectively). In sum, implementing a network approach improves our comprehension concerning the character of the problems central to the development of psychosocial difficulties. Therapy directed at problems related to the most central domain(s) constitutes the more rational one because such an approach will inevitably carry over to other domains that depend on the more central function
Reirradiation of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas: a pragmatic approach-part I: prognostic factors and indications to treatment.
INTRODUCTION
Reirradiation (reRT) of locally recurrent/second primary tumors of the head and neck region is a potentially curative treatment for patients not candidate to salvage surgery. Aim of the present study is to summarize available literature on both prognostic factors and indications to curative reRT in this clinical setting.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A narrative review of the literature was performed on two topics: (1) patients' selection according to prognostic factors and (2) dosimetric feasibility of reRT. Postoperative reRT and palliative intent treatments were out of the scope of this work.
RESULTS
Patient-tumor and treatment-related prognostic factors were analyzed, together with dosimetric parameters concerning target volume and organs at risk. Based on available evidence, a stepwise approach has been proposed aiming to provide a useful tool to identify suitable candidates for curative reRT in clinical practice. This was then applied to two clinical cases, proposed at the end of this work.
CONCLUSION
A second course of RT in head and neck recurrence/second primary tumors is a personalized approach that can be offered to selected patients only in centers with expertise and dedicated equipment following a multidisciplinary team discussion
Correction of Mutant p63 in EEC Syndrome Using siRNA Mediated Allele-Specific Silencing Restores Defective Stem Cell Function
Ectrodactyly-Ectodermal dysplasia-Clefting (EEC) syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disease caused by heterozygous mutations in the p63 gene and characterized by limb defects, orofacial clefting, ectodermal dysplasia, and ocular defects. Patients develop progressive total bilateral limbal stem cell deficiency, which eventually results in corneal blindness. Medical and surgical treatments are ineffective and of limited benefit. Oral mucosa epithelial stem cells (OMESCs) represent an alternative source of stem cells capable of regenerating the corneal epithelium and, combined with gene therapy, could provide an attractive therapeutic avenue. OMESCs from EEC patients carrying the most severe p63 mutations (p.R279H and p.R304Q) were characterized and the genetic defect of p.R279H silenced using allele-specific (AS) small interfering RNAs (siRNAs). Systematic screening of locked nucleic acid (LNA)-siRNAs against R279H-p63 allele in (i) stable WT-\u394Np63\u3b1-RFP and R279H-\u394Np63\u3b1-EGFP cell lines, (ii) transient doubly transfected cell lines, and (iii) p.R279H OMESCs, identified a number of potent siRNA inhibitors for the mutant allele, which had no effect on wild-type p63. In addition, siRNA treatment led to longer acquired life span of mutated stem cells compared to controls, less accelerated stem cell differentiation in vitro, reduced proliferation properties, and effective ability in correcting the epithelial hypoplasia, thus giving rise to full thickness stratified and differentiated epithelia. This study demonstrates the phenotypic correction of mutant stem cells (OMESCs) in EEC syndrome by means of siRNA mediated AS silencing with restoration of function. The application of siRNA, alone or in combination with cell-based therapies, offers a therapeutic strategy for corneal blindness in EEC syndrome
Human neural stem cell transplantation in ALS: initial results from a phase I trial
We report the initial results from a phase I clinical trial for ALS. We transplanted GMP-grade, fetal human neural stem cells from natural in utero death (hNSCs) into the anterior horns of the spinal cord to test for the safety of both cells and neurosurgical procedures in these patients. The trial was approved by the Istituto Superiore di Sanit\ue0 and the competent Ethics Committees and was monitored by an external Safety Board
Almost exponential maps and integrability results for a class of horizontally regular vector fields
We show a higher order integrability theorem for distributions generated by a
family of vector fields under a horizontal regularity assumption on their
coefficients. We use as chart a class of almost exponential maps which we

Correction: Whole-blood expression of inflammasome- and glucocorticoid-related mRNAs correctly separates treatment-resistant depressed patients from drug-free and responsive patients in the BIODEP study
We have corrected this Article post-publication, because Dr. Cattaneo’s affiliation details were originally incorrect (she was affiliated with three institutions but is in fact only linked to one: Biological Psychiatry Unit, IRCCS Istituto Centro San Giovanni di Dio Fatebenefratelli, Brescia). Rapporto 2007 su consumo e dipendenze da sostanze in Emilia-Romagna.
Report on the state of legal and illegal substances use in the territory of Emilia-Romagna Region.
