Treballs Finals del Grau d'Estudis Anglesos, Facultat de Filologia, Universitat de Barcelona, Curs: 2019-2020, Tutora: Imma Miralpeix Pujol[eng] This study examines the differences between Spanish and Korean learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), focusing on some aspects of language learning that can be challenging when learning English. The participants of this study were 10 Spanish and 10 Korean learners of English, who were individually asked about some linguistic aspects related to vocabulary, morphology, syntax and phonetics. These features were selected taking into account the L1 of the learners. All of the participants were sent a questionnaire in which they had to rate the difficulty of the English items under study and the results were quantitatively and qualitatively analysed. Findings show that, in general, the Spanish participants found learning English easier than the Korean participants, and that English pronunciation was the most challenging aspect for both groups.[spa] Este estudio examina las diferencias entre estudiantes españoles y coreanos que aprenden inglés como lengua extranjera, centrándose en algunos aspectos que pueden ser complicados al aprender inglés.

Perceiving the Intangible: Introspective & Meditational Practices in Moroccan Sufism

    Get PDF
Sufism has earned an exponentially prominent role within Morocco’s political and social arenas through recent decades. The Moroccan monarchy’s endorsement of the religious variant and its prevalence in pop-cultural events, national journalism, and literature are a few indicators of its growing influence. However, the tradition is, by no means, a modern construction and has existed since the beginning of the larger Islamic tradition. What qualities, then, has granted Sufism its relevance as a cornerstone of Moroccan society today? Its chief focus on introspective and meditational practices, rather than physical religious discipline, may foster a more inclusive and liberal form of spirituality to match Morocco’s recent political agendas. This paper will investigate what types of exposure Moroccan people have for education on Sufism, what its general perceptions are by Moroccan society, and how its meditational and introspective differentiators might open doors for marginalized groups

PhD supervisors and faculty members might help to avoid burnout as well as enhance engagement and organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) among PhD students.

There has been increased interest in the wellbeing and mental health of postgraduate students in light of the recent portrayal of the academic career as overworked and isolated. Research points to PhD students as being particularly at risk, yet the factors that contribute to PhD students’ compromised wellbeing are unclear. In this study (N = 392), we combine the social cure approach in social psychology with advances in organizational psychology to investigate potential predictors of work-related wellbeing and organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) among PhD students in the UK. In particular, we explore the relationships between social support, willingness to support others, clarity of role, group belonging, engagement, and burnout using structural equation modelling (SEM). Our results point to the importance of support provided by both the supervisor and faculty members in helping to avoid burnout and enhance engagement among students. We also found that students’ identification with supervisors and faculty members together with clarity of role are positively associated with students’ work-related well-being. Moreover, although particular processes differ for early vs. late stage PhD students, our findings suggest that support from faculty members is a key predictor of intentions to perform OCB. Thus, received support is positively related to performing OCB both directly and indirectly via a sense of identification with faculty members. We discuss the implications of our findings in relation to policies aiming at improving the well-being of PhD students

Wanderer, an interactive viewer to explore DNA methylation and gene expression data in human cancer

BACKGROUND: The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) offers a multilayered view of genomics and epigenomics data of many human cancer types. However, the retrieval of expression and methylation data from TCGA is a cumbersome and time-consuming task.RESULTS:Wanderer is an intuitive Web tool allowing real time access and visualization of gene expression and DNA methylation profiles from TCGA. Given a gene query and selection of a TCGA dataset (e.g., colon adenocarcinomas), the Web resource provides the expression profile, at the single exon level, and the DNA methylation levels of HumanMethylation450 BeadChip loci inside or in the vicinity of the queried gene. Graphic and table outputs include individual and summary data as well as statistical tests, allowing the comparison of tumor and normal profiles and the exploration along the genomic locus and across tumor collections. CONCLUSIONS: Wanderer offers a simple interface to straightforward access to TCGA data, amenable to experimentalists and clinicians without bioinformatics expertise. Traumatic L7 articular processes fracture and spondylolisthesis following dorsal lumbosacral laminectomy in a cat

Case summary A 12-year-old neutered male domestic shorthair cat was presented to our referral hospital with a chronic history of tenesmus and lumbosacral pain. A diagnosis of degenerative lumbosacral stenosis (DLSS) was made and a standard dorsal L7–S1 laminectomy was performed uneventfully, with complete recovery within 1 month. The cat was brought back 4 months later for investigation of lumbosacral pain after having suffered a minor traumatic event. Neurological examination identified a low tail carriage, weakness, exercise intolerance, left pelvic limb lameness and diminished withdrawal reflexes in both pelvic limbs with severe sacrocaudal pain. A traumatic facet fracture of the L7 articular processes and subsequent spondylolisthesis was diagnosed. A second surgery was performed to stabilise the region. The cat was normal on neurological examination 1 month later and no further clinical signs were noted. Relevance and novel information This is the first description of a fracture and spondylolisthesis as a possible postoperative complication after L7–S1 dorsal laminectomy in a cat. The case highlights the importance of postoperative changes in the supportive structures of the lumbosacral spine in cats after surgical treatment of DLSS
