    Trends to equilibrium for a class of relativistic diffusions

    We address the question of the trends to equilibrium for a large class C of relativistic diffusions. We show the existence of a spectral gap using the Lyapounov method and deduce the exponential decay of the distance to equilibrium in L2-norm and in total variation. A similar result was obtained recently in arXiv:1009.5086 for a particular process of the class C.Comment: 10 page

    Differential thermal analysis and solution growth of intermetallic compounds

    To obtain single crystals by solution growth, an exposed primary solidification surface in the appropriate, but often unknown, equilibrium alloy phase diagram is required. Furthermore, an appropriate crucible material is needed, necessary to hold the molten alloy during growth, without being attacked by it. Recently, we have used the comparison of realistic simulations with experimental differential thermal analysis (DTA) curves to address both these problems. We have found: 1) complex DTA curves can be interpreted to determine an appropriate heat treatment and starting composition for solution growth, without having to determine the underlying phase diagrams in detail. 2) DTA can facilitate identification of appropriate crucible materials. DTA can thus be used to make the procedure to obtain single crystals of a desired phase by solution growth more efficient. We will use some of the systems for which we have recently obtained single-crystalline samples using the combination of DTA and solution growth as examples. These systems are TbAl, Pr7_7Ni2_2Si5_5, and YMn4_4Al8_8.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figure

    Dielectric properties of charge ordered LuFe2O4 revisited: The apparent influence of contacts

    We show results of broadband dielectric measurements on the charge ordered, proposed to be mul- tiferroic material LuFe2O4. The temperature and frequency dependence of the complex permittivity as investigated for temperatures above and below the charge-oder transition near T_CO ~ 320 K and for frequencies up to 1 GHz can be well described by a standard equivalent-circuit model considering Maxwell-Wagner-type contacts and hopping induced AC-conductivity. No pronounced contribution of intrinsic dipolar polarization could be found and thus the ferroelectric character of the charge order in LuFe2O4 has to be questioned.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    A small sealed Ta crucible for thermal analysis of volatile metallic samples

    Differential thermal analysis on metallic alloys containing volatile elements can be highly problematic. Here we show how measurements can be performed in commercial, small-sample, equipment without modification. This is achieved by using a sealed Ta crucible, easily fabricated from Ta tubing and sealed in a standard arc furnace. The crucible performance is demonstrated by measurements on a mixture of Mg and MgB2_2, after heating up to 1470∘C^{\circ}{\rm C}. We also show data, measured on an alloy with composition Gd40_{40}Mg60_{60}, that clearly shows both the liquidus and a peritectic, and is consistent with published phase diagram data

    Point-contact spectroscopy of Al- and C-doped MgB2. Superconducting energy gaps and scattering studies

    The two-band/two-gap superconductivity in aluminium and carbon doped MgB2_2 has been addressed by the point-contact spectroscopy. Two gaps are preserved in all samples with Tc′sT_c's down to 22 K. The evolution of two gaps as a function of the critical temperature in the doped systems suggest the dominance of the band-filling effects but for the increased Al-doping the enhanced interband scattering approaching two gaps must be considered. The magnetic field dependences of the Andreev reflection excess currents as well as zero-energy density of states determined from the experimental data are used to analyze the intraband scattering. It is shown, that while the C-doping increases the intraband scattering in the π\pi-band more rapidly then in the σ\sigma band, the Al-doping does not change their relative weight.Comment: 8 pages, incl. 6 figure

    Prospective randomized trial comparing sutured with sutureless mesh fixation for Lichtenstein hernia repair: long-term results

    Background: Following Lichtenstein hernia repair, up to 25% of patients experience prolonged postoperative and chronic pain as well as discomfort in the groin. One of the underlying causes of these complaints are the compression or irritation of nerves by the sutures used to fixate the mesh. We compared the level and rate of chronic pain in patients operated with the classical Lichtenstein technique fixated by sutures to patients with sutureless mesh fixation technique. Methods: A two-armed randomized trial with 264 male patients was performed. After consent, patients were randomized preoperatively. For the fixation of the mesh we used either sutures with slow-absorbing material (PDS 2.0) (group I, n=133) or tissue glue (Histoacryl) (group II, n=131). Follow-up examinations were performed after 3, 12months and after 5years. Results: Patient characteristics in the two groups were similar. No cross-over between groups was observed. After 5years, long-term follow-up could be completed for 59% of subjects. After 5years, 10/85 (11.7%) patients in group I and 3/70 (4.2%) in group II suffered from chronic pain in the groin region (P=0.108). The operation time was significantly shorter in group II (79min vs 73min, P=0.01). One early recurrence occurred in group II (3months). The recurrence rate was 0 and 0% after 12months and 5.9% (5/85) and 10% (7/70) after 5years in group I and group II, respectively (P=0.379). Conclusion: After 5years, the two techniques of mesh fixation resulted in similar rates of chronic pain. Whereas recurrence rates were comparable, fixation of the mesh with tissue glue decreased operating room time significantly. Hence, suture less mesh fixation with Histoacryl is a sensible alternative to suture fixation and should be especially considered for patients prone to pai

    Charge Order Superstructure with Integer Iron Valence in Fe2OBO3

    Solution-grown single crystals of Fe2OBO3 were characterized by specific heat, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction. A peak in the specific heat at 340 K indicates the onset of charge order. Evidence for a doubling of the unit cell at low temperature is presented. Combining structural refinement of diffraction data and Mossbauer spectra, domains with diagonal charge order are established. Bond-valence-sum analysis indicates integer valence states of the Fe ions in the charge ordered phase, suggesting Fe2OBO3 is the clearest example of ionic charge order so far.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures.     Growth methods of c-axis oriented MgB2 thin films by pulsed laser deposition

    High quality MgB2 thin films have been obtained by pulsed laser deposition both on MgO and on Al2O3 substrates using different methods. In the standard two-step procedure, an amorphous precursor layer is deposited at room temperature starting both from stoichiometric target and from boron target: after this first step, it is annealed in magnesium atmosphere in order to crystallize the superconducting phase. The so obtained films show a strong c-axis orientation, evidenced by XRD analysis, a critical temperature up to 38 K and very high critical fields along the basal planes, up to 22T at 15K. Also an in situ one step technique for the realization of superconducting MgB2 thin films has been developed. In this case, the presence of an argon buffer gas during deposition is crucial and we observe a strong dependence of the quality of the deposited film on the background gas pressure. The influence of the Ar atmosphere has been confirmed by time and space-resolved spectroscopy measurements on the emission spectrum of the plume. The Ar pressure modifies strongly the plasma kinetics by promoting excitation and ionization of the plume species, especially of the most volatile Mg atoms, increasing their internal energy.Comment: Paper presented at Boromag Workshop, Genoa 17-19 June 2002, in press on SUS
