On Internal Characterizations of CompletelyL-Regular Spaces

    Get PDF
AbstractCompleteL-regularity is internally characterized in terms of separating chains of openL-sets. A possible characterization in terms of normal and separating families of closedL-sets is discussed and it is shown that spaces admitting such families are completelyL-regular. The question of whether the converse holds true remains open. Some partial solutions are however given, e.g. in the class of countably compact spaces

Examining Retirement Housing Preferences Among International Retiree Migrants

    Get PDF
Housing demand models based on individual consumers' utility function reflect preferences about the structure and lot, neighborhood, and location as related to socioeconomic characteristics of the occupants. As a growing proportion of aging residents in many countries are undertaking late life moves, their preferences will have an influence on destination housing markets. We examine the characteristics, attitudes and preferences about retirement housing among immigrant retirees currently living in traditional housing in a retirement destination in Alicante, Spain. Using results from a survey of German and British retirees living in the region, we find through logistic regression that preference for retirement housing is associated with aging and gaining access to in-home support services.Housing preferences; Demographic trends; Seniors housing

T-Cell Development in Early Partially Decapitated Chicken Embryos

    Get PDF
We have evaluated the immunohistological and cytofluorometric changes that occur in the thymus of chicken embryos partially decapitated at 33-38 hr of incubation (DCx embryos) in an attempt to analyze possible neuroendocrinological influences on T-cell differentiation and, indirectly, the ontogeny of the so-called neuroendocrine-immune network. The thymus of DCx embryos shows important variations that profoundly and selectively affect different T-cell subsets, but not the nonlymphoid cell components of thymic stroma. These modifications include the accumulation of cell precursors, mainly DN (CD4- CD8-) cells and immature CD8high CD4- cells, which expand but do not differentiate, resulting in an extreme decline of both DP (CD4+ CD8+) cells and TcR c-expressing cells. Accordingly, both subcapsulary and outer cortex increase in size, whereas the deep cortex and principally the thymic medulla almost disappear in DCx embryos. In contrast, other T-cell subsets of DCx embryos, largely CDgglowCD4- cells and TcR γδ-expressing cells do not undergo significant variations throughout thymic ontogeny

Born in the Mediterranean: Comprehensive Taxonomic Revision of Biscutella ser. Biscutella (Brassicaceae) Based on Morphological and Phylogenetic Data

    Get PDF
Biscutella L. ser. Biscutella (= Biscutella ser. Lyratae Malin.) comprises mostly annual or short-lived perennial plants occurring in the Mediterranean basin and the Middle East, which exhibit some diagnostic floral features. Taxa in the series have considerable morphological plasticity, which is not well correlated with clear geographic or ecologic patterns. Traditional taxonomic accounts have focused on a number of vegetative and floral characters that have proved to be highly variable, a fact that contributed to taxonomic inflation mostly in northern Africa. A detailed study and re-evaluation of morphological characters, together with recent phylogenetic data based on concatenation of two plastid and one nuclear region sequence data, yielded the basis for a taxonomic reappraisal of the series. In this respect, a new comprehensive integrative taxonomic arrangement for Biscutella ser. Biscutella is presented in which 10 taxa are accepted, namely seven species and three additional varieties. The name B. eriocarpa DC. is reinterpreted and suggested to include the highest morphological variation found in northern Morocco. Its treatment here accepts two varieties, one of which is described as new (B. eriocarpa var. riphaea A. Vicente, M. Á. Alonso & M. B. Crespo). In addition, the circumscriptions of several species, such as B. boetica Boiss. & Reut., B. didyma L., B. lyrata L., and B. maritima Ten., are revisited. Nomenclatural types, synonymy, brief descriptions, cytogenetic data, conservation status, distribution maps, and identification keys are included for the accepted taxa, with seven lectotypes and one epitype being designated here. The FPU grant program (Mº de Educación, Cultura y Deporte, Spanish Government) is kindly thanked for supporting A. The Seminary School of Corpus Christi is one of the most important buildings in the city of Valencia, Spain. The building has contributed with the University of Valencia to the urban transformation of the neighborhood in which they are located throughout its 4004-year history. In this study is proposed a five-phase methodology for the study of urban organization before its construction. We achieved to develop an original hypothesis of how seminary school block plots were organized through the study and analysis of their purchase contracts, which are dated between 1586 and 1601. It is interesting to note the plot acquisition sequence and its influence in the building construction process.Lerma Elvira, C.; Mas Tomas, MDLA.; Blasco García, V. (2013). Cooperative learning and brainstorming as didactic strategies in conservation and restoration of cultural assets

[EN] This article exposes the tools of cooperative learning and brainstorming as a didactic strategy, in which teamwork, diversity, interaction between the students and feedback between them are promoted as the main source of learning. In professions related to the conservation and restoration of cultural assets, we work as a team, thus is fundamental that the students' training prepares them for this work reality and enables them to be part of and lead these teams, fostering cross-cutting skills such as communication effective, critical thinking, application and practical thinking among others. We will present the case of a teaching experience, in which cooperative learning is a fundamental tool to solve one of the practices of the subject “Introduction to the Conservation and Restoration of golds and polychromies” of the Degree in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Assets in Universitat Politècnica de València. The practice consists in the identification of manufacturing techniques, and focuses on the subsequent professionalization and comprehensive training of students. The results obtained from it show how peer learning is an effective, dynamic strategy with infinite possibilities.Carabal Montagud, MA.; Santamarina Campos, V.; Esgueva López, MV.; Vicente Palomino, S.
