Large mass boundary condensation patterns in the stationary Keller-Segel system

We consider the boundary value problem Δu+u=λeu-\Delta u + u =\lambda e^u in Ω\Omega with Neumann boundary condition, where Ω\Omega is a bounded smooth domain in R2\mathbb R^2, λ>0.\lambda>0. This problem is equivalent to the stationary Keller-Segel system from chemotaxis. We establish the existence of a solution uλu_\lambda which exhibits a sharp boundary layer along the entire boundary Ω\partial\Omega as λ0\lambda\to 0. These solutions have large mass in the sense that $ \int_\Omega \lambda e^{u_\lambda} \sim |\log\lambda|.

Multi-bubble nodal solutions for slightly subcritical elliptic problems in domains with symmetries

We study the existence of sign-changing solutions with multiple bubbles to the slightly subcritical problem -\Delta u=|u|^{2^*-2-\e}u \hbox{in}\Omega, \quad u=0 \hbox{on}\partial \Omega, where Ω\Omega is a smooth bounded domain in RN\R^N, N3N\geq 3, 2=2NN22^*=\frac{2N}{N-2} and \e>0 is a small parameter. In particular we prove that if Ω\Omega is convex and satisfies a certain symmetry, then a nodal four-bubble solution exists with two positive and two negative bubbles

Boundary clustered layers near the higher critical exponents

We consider the supercritical problem {equation*} -\Delta u=|u| ^{p-2}u\text{\in}\Omega,\quad u=0\text{\on}\partial\Omega, {equation*} where Ω\Omega is a bounded smooth domain in RN\mathbb{R}^{N} and pp smaller than the critical exponent 2N,k:=2(Nk)Nk22_{N,k}^{\ast}:=\frac{2(N-k)}{N-k-2} for the Sobolev embedding of H1(RNk)H^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{N-k}) in Lq(RNk)L^{q}(\mathbb{R}^{N-k}), 1kN3.1\leq k\leq N-3. We show that in some suitable domains Ω\Omega there are positive and sign changing solutions with positive and negative layers which concentrate along one or several kk-dimensional submanifolds of Ω\partial\Omega as pp approaches 2N,k2_{N,k}^{\ast} from below. Key words:Nonlinear elliptic boundary value problem; critical and supercritical exponents; existence of positive and sign changing solutions

Platelets promote human macrophages-mediated macropinocytosis of Clostridioides difficile

Clostridioides difficile is the main causative agent of hospital-acquired diarrhea and the potentially lethal disease, C. difficile infection. The cornerstone of the current therapy is the use of antibiotics, which is not fully effective. The molecular mechanisms, inflammatory conditions and host-immune responses that could benefit the persistence or elimination of C. difficile remain unclear. Macrophages perform different ways of endocytosis as part of their immune surveillance functions and platelets, classically known for their coagulatory role, are also important modulators of the immune system. The aim of this study was to evaluate the endocytosis of vegetative C. difficile by human macrophages and the involvement of platelets in this process. Our results showed that both macrophages and platelets interact with live and heat-killed C. difficile. Furthermore, platelets form complexes with human monocytes in healthy donor´s fresh blood and the presence of C. difficile increased these cell-cell interactions. Using flow cytometry and confocal microscopy, we show that macrophages can internalize C. difficile and that platelets improve this uptake. By using inhibitors of different endocytic pathways, we demonstrate that macropinocytosis is the route of entry of C. difficile into the cell. Taken together, our findings are the first evidence for the internalization of vegetative non-toxigenic and hypervirulent C. difficile by human macrophages and highlight the role of platelets in innate immunity during C. difficile infection. Deciphering the crosstalk of C. difficile with immune cells could provide new tools for understanding the pathogenesis of C. difficile infection and for the development of hostdirected therapies.Fil: Barbero, Angela Maria. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2015. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) and TiO2/Au/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposite thin films were grown by ultraviolet matrix assisted pulsed laser evaporation (UV-MAPLE) in controlled O2 or N2 atmospheres. An UV KrF∗ excimer laser (λ = 248 nm, τFWHM ∼ 25 ns, ν = 10 Hz) was used for the irradiation of the MAPLE targets consisting of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) or mixtures of TiO2 NPs, Au NPs, and graphene oxide (GO) platelets in aqueous solutions. The effect of Au and GO addition as well as nitrogen doping on the photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 thin films was investigated. The evaluation of the photocatalytic activity was performed by photodegradation of the organic methylene blue model dye pollutant under UV-visible light, >simulated sun> irradiation conditions. Our results show that the photocatalytic properties of TiO2 were significantly improved by the addition of Au NPs and rGO platelets. Nitrogen inclusion into the rGO structure further contributes to the enhancement of the TiO2/Au/rGO nanocomposites photocatalytic activity. The authors thank the financial support of the Executive Unit for Financing Higher Education, Research, Development, and Innovation of the Romanian Ministry of Education and Scientific Research under the contract PN-IIPT-PCCA-2011-3.2-1235 and the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness under the contract ENE2014-56109-C3-3-R.Peer reviewedPeer Reviewe

    Get PDF
Tesi

Sign-changing tower of bubbles for a sinh-Poisson equation with asymmetric exponents

Motivated by the statistical mechanics description of stationary 2D-turbulence, for a sinh-Poisson type equation with asymmetric nonlinearity, we construct a concentrating solution sequence in the form of a tower of singular Liouville bubbles, each of which has a different degeneracy exponent. The asymmetry parameter γ(0,1]\gamma\in(0,1] corresponds to the ratio between the intensity of the negatively rotating vortices and the intensity of the positively rotating vortices. Our solutions correspond to a superposition of highly concentrated vortex configurations of alternating orientation; they extend in a nontrivial way some known results for γ=1\gamma=1. Thus, by analyzing the case γ1\gamma\neq1 we emphasize specific properties of the physically relevant parameter γ\gamma in the vortex concentration phenomena
