SOCIAL WORKERS PERCEPTION OF FACTORS EFFECTING CLIENT’S RETURN TO SKILLED-NURSING CARE FACILITIES POST-DISCHARGE

The following study explored the factors effecting client’s return to skilled nursing facilities post-discharge, from the perspective of the social workers and social services staff working within skilled nursing facilities. The significance of this research was to gain a better understanding from the individuals working closest to the problem, and to use the information gained to develop further research regarding the issue of rapid-readmission post discharge. This study was qualitative with the use of an interview guide. Audio data was collected through 9 Zoom interviews and then transcribed for content analysis. Through content analysis the researchers examined the respondent’s answers looking for four common themes. Within these themes, the issue of homelessness, income, discharge location, substance abuse/mental health, the effectiveness of home health agencies, lack of family support, and the client’s own self-neglect/non-compliance with treatment were amongst the most common topics to be brought up by respondents. Understanding these common themes and issues impacts both the social worker and the client, by providing an understanding of which policies and practices are successful or not successful both within skilled nursing facilities and out in the community

Integration of Colombian refugees in Costa Rica : an ethnographic approach to the refugees\u27 legal, economic, and social experiences

This qualitative study, based on interviews to 17 refugee families, attempts to identify the reasons behind the lack of integration of Colombian refugees in Costa Rica. The model of Immigrant Modes of Incorporation and the studies of Alejandro Portes and Julia Sensenbrenner about the sources of social capital on migrant communities provided the theoretical framework used to identify the roots of the integration challenges. The findings suggest that Costa Rican policies towards the reception and integration of Colombian refugees are exclusionary. The host labor market is marked by sentiments of xenophobia towards the sample population while reported cases of persecution in the country also inhibit this population\u27s economic integration. The lack of social capital sources contributes to inhibit this community\u27s development, despite their participation in informal networks. There were signs of collective action. Yet, the refugee community fails to come together, while it also seems alienated from the community of Colombian entrepreneurs in Costa Rica

En el presente artículo se muestran indicadores que permiten medir el impacto que genera la implementación de proyectos sostenibles en viviendas de la ciudad de Bogotá, este proyecto se basa en la recolección y reutilización de aguas lluvias para el consumo de sanitarios, conexiones en patios y/o jardines. Para el desarrollo del sistema los datos fueron suministrados por una familia de estrato 3, sus niveles de consumo y número de habitantes en la vivienda, posteriormente se realizó el diseño del sistema arrojando la demanda, oferta y el volumen de almacenamiento, por medio de lo cual se calcula el porcentaje de ahorro. Partiendo de la inversión o el costo del sistema se compara con el ahorro anual con la implementación del proyecto, este se refleja por medio de indicadores económicos como relación beneficio – costo y periodo de retorno para saber si es viable el proyecto y si vale la pena invertir en él. El impacto de la implementación se demuestra mediante la curva de demanda la cual muestra el ahorro, costos y posibles aumentos del consumo. Otro aporte del documento es el llamado a la concientización del uso inadecuado que se le está dando a los recursos naturales no renovables, por medio de ejemplos de proyectos sostenibles a nivel nacional que se han realizado con éxito. Por ende del presente artículo brinda un análisis de factores económicos y volumétricos de consumo para ayudar al usuario a optar por la opción brindada.This article shows indicators to measure the impact that the implementation of sustainable housing projects in Bogota causes. The indicators were based on the collection and reuse of rainwater for consumption toilets, playgrounds connections and gardens. For system development data were provided by a family of layer 3 levels of consumption and population in housing, then the system design was done throwing the demand, supply and the storage volume, by what where the savings rate is calculated. Based on the investment or the cost of the system compared to the annual savings with the implementation of the project, this is reflected by economic indicators such relationship benefit - cost and payback period to know the feasibility of the project and whether it is worth invest in it. The impact of the implementation is evidenced by the demand curve which shows savings, costs and possible increases in consumption. Another contribution of the paper is the call to increase awareness of inappropriate use that is being given to non-renewable natural resources, through examples of sustainable projects nationwide that have been successful. Hence this article provides an analysis of economic and volumetric consumption factors to help the user to choose the option provided

SisFall : A Fall and Movement Dataset

ABSTRACT: Research on fall and movement detection with wearable devices has witnessed promising growth. However, there are few publicly available datasets, all recorded with smartphones, which are insufficient for testing new proposals due to their absence of objective population, lack of performed activities, and limited information. Here, we present a dataset of falls and activities of daily living (ADLs) acquired with a self-developed device composed of two types of accelerometer and one gyroscope. It consists of 19 ADLs and 15 fall types performed by 23 young adults, 15 ADL types performed by 14 healthy and independent participants over 62 years old, and data from one participant of 60 years old that performed all ADLs and falls. These activities were selected based on a survey and a literature analysis. We test the dataset with widely used feature extraction and a simple to implement threshold based classification, achieving up to 96% of accuracy in fall detection. An individual activity analysis demonstrates that most errors coincide in a few number of activities where new approaches could be focused. Finally, validation tests with elderly people significantly reduced the fall detection performance of the tested features. This validates findings of other authors and encourages developing new strategies with this new dataset as the benchmark

Design and implementation of the web : linguistic and ethnographic atlas of Colombia

The Atlas Lingüístico y Etnográfico de Colombia (Linguistic and Ethnographic Atlas of Colombia), known by “ALEC” is a compilation of popular speaking Spanish of the populations of Colombia; such research was carried out for more than fifty years. The result of this work is a collection of thematic maps organized in six volumes and its supplements in analog format. In that sense was created the project entitles “Interactive ALEC” which main objective is to develop a digital and interactive web version of the ethnographic and Linguistic Atlas of Colombia (1983) and its supplements. In this way the Corpus linguistics research group belonging to the Institute Caro y Cuervo and the research group NIDE of the Universidad Distrital “Francisco José de Caldas” have been working together in the design and development of the Atlas Web, that allows the visualization and consulting of the spatial information contained in the volume III of the analog ALEC Atlas, applying concepts of Geographical Information Systems and web cartography. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to show the process of design and development of the web prototype of the ALEC as a collection of static and dynamic maps, which show spatial information, combined with multimedia content, taking into account that in addition to all maps, the total compendium includes images, illustrations, photographs, audio and text comments. Likewise, the interactive ALEC is a good example of how to use geo-technology tools nowadays, because they are essential for the dissemination of geo linguistic information through internet, achieving more access and distribution of the Atlas web

The advancement of the protection of animal rights in Colombia: bibliographic exploration and documentary analysis

El desarrollo del siguiente articulo denominado “El avance de la protección a los Derechos de los animales en Colombia: exploración bibliográfica y analítica documental” tiene como propósito principal establecer el progreso de la protección de los derechos a los animales, sustentado en la aplicación normativa expuesta de forma documental y analítica. Por ello, en primer lugar, se desarrolla una exploración bibliográfica en bases de datos académicas, seguido de una selección de prioridades acorde con la temática y resultado final de los documentos encontrados. La presente investigación fue desarrollada en el marco de la convocatoria de proyectos en la línea abierta del programa Ondas Colciencias liderado por la Universidad de la Amazonia de Florencia Caquetá. La investigación estuvo orientada a: la extracción de los pigmentos colorantes tipo flavonoides en medio metanólico, identificación a través de pruebas colorimétricas y cromatográficas y la cuantificación espectrofotométrica de los flavonoides totales, presentes en la flor de pomo (Syzygium jambos) colectada en la zona verde de la sede San Juan Bosco de la IEAR ubicada en Florencia Caquetá. Los pigmentos colorantes tipo flavonoides identificados fueron: catequinas, antocianinas, leucoantocianidinas, calconas, flavanonas. Los flavonoides totales expresados como mg de catequinas por gramo de extracto seco fueron 3.580,8614.This research was carried out in the framework of Colciencias call for projects in the open line of Ondas program led by Amazonia University in Florencia, Caquetá. The study was oriented to the extraction of coloring flavonoid pigments in methanolic medium, the identification - through chlorimetric and chromatographic tests and spectrophotometric quantification - of total flavonoids in the Syzygium jambos, the Pomo tree flower, gathered in the green area of San Juan Bosco, part of the IEAR (Antonio Ricaurte School) in Florencia, Caquetá. The flavonoid pigments identified were: catechins, anthocyanins, leucoanthocyanidins, chalcones, and flavanones. The total flavonoids expressed as mg of catechins per gram of dry extract was 3,580.8614
