La Serenissima in Cyprus : aspects of Venetian art on the edge of a maritime empire, 1474/89–1570/1

This article investigates the manifestation of Venetian visual culture of the Renaissance in the island of Cyprus, which, between 1474/89 and 1570/1, stood as one of Venice’s Mediterranean colonies. To date, scholarship on panel and wall painting production of Venetian Cyprus has devoted careful attention to the infiltration of Italian details and styles in the broader sense—mainly drawn from the Italian Middle Ages—thus failing to notice any correlations between Cypriot visual arts and contemporary Venetian. In this study, I aim to provide an overarching perspective that will illuminate the presence and assimilation of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Venetian visual vocabulary in Cypriot artistic capital. With an emphasis on devotional painting, I will examine iconographic schemes, such as the Man of Sorrows and the Holy Conversation, and facets of stylistic and iconographic correspondences between the two territories. I will also probe the architectural function, purpose, and tenor of lunette-shaped panels in Cyprus and collate them with their Venetian equivalents. Put simply, I hope to flesh out the artistic contact Cypriot artists and their sponsors maintained with Venice rather than with Italy as a whole.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

The paediatric suprasellar cistern as an important CT review area

Pathology affecting the suprasellar cistern is varied in paediatric neuroradiology practice. Although MRI is the imaging modality of choice for lesions of the suprasellar cistern, abnormalities can be detected on CT with knowledge of the normal anatomy and a sound approach to the possible pathological entities. We present our approach to pathology affecting the suprasellar cistern and highlight this using various cases seen at our institution in the recent past

Advances in imaging chest tuberculosis: blurring of differences between children and adults

This article reviews the ongoing role of imaging in the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) and its complications. A modern imaging classification of TB, taking into account both adults and children and the blurring of differences in the presentation patterns, must be absorbed into daily practice. Clinicians must not only be familiar with imaging features of TB but also become expert at detecting these when radiologists are unavailable. Communication between radiologists and clinicians with regard to local constraints, patterns of disease, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) coinfection rates, and imaging parameters relevant for management (especially in drug resistance programs) is paramount for making an impact with imaging, and preserving clinician confidence. Recognition of special imaging, anatomic and vulnerability differences between children and adults is more important than trying to define patterns of disease exclusive to children

Imaging findings in a patient with eosinophilic pneumonia (Lvffler's syndrome)

Löffler’s syndrome was initially described as a disorder characterised by transient pulmonary infiltrates accompanied by peripheral blood eosinophilia in asymptomatic or mildly ill patients. Abnormal chest radiographic findings are said to occur in 95% of patients but there are no descriptions of CT findings. There are many causes of this syndrome, but in developing countries the most common presentation remains secondary to the migratory larvae of common intestinal helminths. Hypertensive encephalopathy with CT confirmation in four children with acute renal disease

Hypertensive encephalopathy (HE) is a clinical syndrome that occurs infrequently in children and is often underdiagnosed. We review four patients with HE and describe their clinical presentation and radiological findings on computed tomography (CT). Our cases demonstrate typical features on CT and correlate clinically with the syndrome of HE. Prompt recognition of the syndrome aids in earlier diagnosis and treatment, and hence proves beneficial to the patient

The Lute Music of Melchiore de Barberiis (1546-1549) with Specific Reference to Books V, IX and X

This thesis is a study of the three books of lute music by the Italian composer Melchiore de Barberiis (fl 1546, 1549). The content of the music in the books is mostly based on intabulations of vocal songs but also includes a number of dances and fantasias. In this study I have provided transcriptions of the complete contents of the three books. Intabulations of vocal pieces are examined, as well as Fantasias and dances, in order to understand the composer’s intabulation and compositional techniques. Intabulations are compared to different versions of the same pieces, where possible, and focus on the structure and the implications for musica ficta. The styles of fantasias and dances – two contrasting styles in terms of structure and harmony – are studied, with further reference to parallel pieces by other composers. In addition, the study illustrates the frequency of – what are normally regarded as harmonic – solecisms in each genre. Further comments on stylistic and idiomatic lute playing are included, as well as historiographical information in order to place Barberiis in the compositional context of his time. Moreover, excerpts from intabulations and dances are quoted and analysed, based on the theory of hexachords. The purpose of this approach associates with the idea of using musica ficta evidence found in intabulations, as a guide for performance
