On the number of representations providing noiseless subsystems
This paper studies the combinatoric structure of the set of all
representations, up to equivalence, of a finite-dimensional semisimple Lie
algebra. This has intrinsic interest as a previously unsolved problem in
representation theory, and also has applications to the understanding of
quantum decoherence. We prove that for Hilbert spaces of sufficiently high
dimension, decoherence-free subspaces exist for almost all representations of
the error algebra. For decoherence-free subsystems, we plot the function
which is the fraction of all -dimensional quantum systems which
preserve bits of information through DF subsystems, and note that this
function fits an inverse beta distribution. The mathematical tools which arise

Polynomial Identities, Indices, and Duality for the N=1 Superconformal Model SM(2,4\nu)
We prove polynomial identities for the N=1 superconformal model SM(2,4\nu)
which generalize and extend the known Fermi/Bose character identities. Our
proof uses the q-trinomial coefficients of Andrews and Baxter on the bosonic
side and a recently introduced very general method of producing recursion
relations for q-series on the fermionic side. We use these polynomials to
demonstrate a dual relation under q \rightarrow q^{-1} between SM(2,4\nu) and
M(2\nu-1,4\nu). We also introduce a generalization of the Witten index which is

Group life insurance in Kuwait : problems and prospects
The Kuwaiti government obliged firms to cover part of employee's risks through legislation in 1965 and 1977. Employers should cover risks as death or job
injury due to or during work. This had affected the group life insurance (GLI) market.
The thesis examines the economics of this market. Problem of choosing the right life
table with respect to Kuwaiti mortality rates is tested. The efficiency of using English life tables to estimate mortality rates in Kuwait GLI market is examined. The effects of GLI underwriters on the market are investigated. The Social Security Services (SSS) are offered for Kuwaitis only, Non-Kuwaitis face more economical insecurity than Kuwaitis do. Therefore, the demand for employees' group investment plan to cover future security facing Kuwaiti and non-Kuwaiti workers, in particular, is also
considered.
The thesis suggests several methods to solve the problems facing the Kuwait GLI market. Kuwaiti Mortality rates are estimated using data from both the Social Security Association (SSA) and a sample of term group life insurees to be compared with English and American life tables. Methods of avoiding lack of information, adverse selection, and moral hazard in Kuwait GLI market are proposed. Finally, the
advantages of introducing group investment plan are examined, and it was shown that
these could alleviate SSS problems. Use of group investment plan should reduce the
cost of the SSS for Kuwaitis, secure part of Non-Kuwaitis risks, and assist insurers to
avoid or reduce their economic problems

The Bivariate Rogers-Szeg\"{o} Polynomials
We present an operator approach to deriving Mehler's formula and the Rogers
formula for the bivariate Rogers-Szeg\"{o} polynomials . The proof
of Mehler's formula can be considered as a new approach to the nonsymmetric
Poisson kernel formula for the continuous big -Hermite polynomials
due to Askey, Rahman and Suslov. Mehler's formula for
involves a sum and the Rogers formula involves a sum.
The proofs of these results are based on parameter augmentation with respect to
the -exponential operator and the homogeneous -shift operator in two
variables. By extending recent results on the Rogers-Szeg\"{o} polynomials
due to Hou, Lascoux and Mu, we obtain another Rogers-type formula

Publishing and sharing multi-dimensional image data with OMERO
Imaging data are used in the life and biomedical sciences to measure the molecular and structural composition and dynamics of cells, tissues, and organisms. Datasets range in size from megabytes to terabytes and usually contain a combination of binary pixel data and metadata that describe the acquisition process and any derived results. The OMERO image data management platform allows users to securely share image datasets according to specific permissions levels: data can be held privately, shared with a set of colleagues, or made available via a public URL. Users control access by assigning data to specific Groups with defined membership and access rights. OMEROâs Permission system supports simple data sharing in a lab, collaborative data analysis, and even teaching environments. OMERO software is open source and released by the OME Consortium at www.openmicroscopy.org
Measurements of Aperture Averaging on Bit-Error-Rate
We report on measurements made at the Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF) runway at Kennedy Space Center of receiver aperture averaging effects on a propagating optical Gaussian beam wave over a propagation path of 1,000 in. A commercially available instrument with both transmit and receive apertures was used to transmit a modulated laser beam operating at 1550 nm through a transmit aperture of 2.54 cm. An identical model of the same instrument was used as a receiver with a single aperture that was varied in size up to 20 cm to measure the effect of receiver aperture averaging on Bit Error Rate. Simultaneous measurements were also made with a scintillometer instrument and local weather station instruments to characterize atmospheric conditions along the propagation path during the experiments
Potential for ecological nonlinearities and thresholds to inform Pacific salmon management
AbstractEcology is often governed by nonlinear dynamics. Nonlinear ecological relationships can include thresholdsâincremental changes in drivers that provoke disproportionately large ecological responses. Among the species that experience nonlinear and threshold dynamics are Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.). These culturally, ecologically, and economically significant fishes are in many places declining and management focal points. Often, managers can influence or react to ecological conditions that salmon experience, suggesting that nonlinearities, especially thresholds, may provide opportunities to inform decisions. However, nonlinear dynamics are not always invoked in management decisions involving salmon. Here, we review reported nonlinearities and thresholds in salmon ecology, describe potential applications that scientists and managers could develop to leverage nonlinear dynamics, and offer a path toward decisions that account for ecological nonlinearities and thresholds to improve salmon outcomes. It appears that nonlinear dynamics are not uncommon in salmon ecology and that many management arenas may potentially leverage them to enable more effective or efficient decisions. Indeed, decisions guided by nonlinearities and thresholds may be particularly desirable considering salmon management arenas are often characterized by limited resources and mounting ecological stressors, practical constraints, and conservation challenges. More broadly, many salmon systems are dataârich and there are an extensive range of ecological contexts in which salmon are sensitive to anthropogenic decisions. Approaches developed to leverage nonlinearities in salmon ecology may serve as examples that may inform analogous approaches in other systems and taxa
