    The Effect of EDTA in Attachment Gain and Root Coverage

    Root surface biomodification using low pH agents such as citric acid and tetracycline has been proposed to enhance root coverage following connective tissue grafting. The authors hypothesized that root conditioning with neutral pH edetic acid would improve vertical recession depth, root surface coverage, pocket depth, and clinical attachment levels. Twenty teeth in 10 patients with Miller class I and II recession were treated with connective tissue grafting. The experimental sites received 24% edetic acid in sterile distilled water applied to the root surface for 2 minutes before grafting. Controls were pretreated with only sterile distilled water. Measurements were evaluated before surgery and 6 months after surgery. Analysis of variance was used to determine differences between experimental and control groups. We found significant postoperative improvements in vertical recession depth, root surface coverage, and clinical attachment levels in test and control groups, compared to postoperative data. Pocket depth differences were not significant (P\u3c.01)

    Breakdown of the static picture of defect energetics in halide perovskites: the case of the Br vacancy in CsPbBr3

    We consider the Br vacancy in CsPbBr3 as a prototype for the impact of structural dynamics on defect energetics in halide perovskites (HaPs). Using first-principles molecular dynamics based on density functional theory, we find that the static picture of defect energetics breaks down; the energy of the Br vacancy level is found to be intrinsically dynamic, oscillating by as much as 1 eV on the ps time scale at room temperature. These significant energy fluctuations are correlated with the distance between the neighboring Pb atoms across the vacancy and with the electrostatic potential at these Pb atomic sites. We expect this unusually strong coupling of structural dynamics and defect energetics to bear important implications for both experimental and theoretical analysis of defect characteristics in HaPs.     Sex differences in eye gaze and symbolic cueing of attention

    Observing a face with averted eyes results in a reflexive shift of attention to the gazed-at location. Here we present results that show that this effect is weaker in males than in females (Experiment 1). This result is predicted by the ‘extreme male brain’ theory of autism (Baron-Cohen, 2003), which suggests that males in the normal population should display more autism-like traits than females (e.g., poor joint attention). Indeed, participants′ scores on the Autism-Spectrum Quotient (Baron-Cohen, Wheelwright, Stott, Bolton, & Goodyear, 2001) negatively correlated with cueing magnitude. Furthermore, exogenous orienting did not differ between the sexes in two peripheral cueing experiments (Experiments 2a and 2b). However, a final experiment showed that using non-predictive arrows instead of eyes as a central cue also revealed a large gender difference. This demonstrates that reduced orienting from central cues in males generalizes beyond gaze cues. These results show that while peripheral cueing is equivalent in the male and female brains, the attention systems of the two sexes treat noninformative symbolic cues very differently

    Strategies and interlanguage pragmatics: Explicit and comprehensive

    Explicit instruction in strategies for interlanguage pragmatic learning is fundamental to the development of a comprehensive set of pragmatic abilities in the target language. In this article, we begin by providing an overview of previous work in the area of language learner strategies directed at the teaching and learning of pragmatics. We then offer an extension of Cohen’s (2005, 2014) framework of strategies for learning, using, and evaluating the use of interlanguage pragmatics in four domains: knowledge, analysis, subjectivity, and awareness (Sykes, Malone, Forrest, & Sadgic, forthcoming). Examples from current projects are provided to exemplify the critical importance of a strategies-based approach to the teaching and learning of interlanguage pragmatics. The article concludes with ideas for future research and implementation

    BH3 profiling and a toolkit of BH3-mimetic drugs predict anti-apoptotic dependence of cancer cells

    BACKGROUND: Anti-apoptotic BCL-2 family members antagonise apoptosis by sequestering their pro-apoptotic counterparts. The balance between the different BCL-2 family members forms the basis of BH3 profiling, a peptide-based technique used to predict chemosensitivity of cancer cells. Recent identification of cell-permeable, selective inhibitors of BCL-2, BCL-X(L) and MCL-1, further facilitates the determination of the BCL-2 family dependency of cancer cells. METHODS: We use BH3 profiling in combination with cell death analyses using a chemical inhibitor toolkit to assess chemosensitivity of cancer cells. RESULTS: Both BH3 profiling and the inhibitor toolkit effectively predict chemosensitivity of cells addicted to a single anti-apoptotic protein but a combination of both techniques is more instructive when cell survival depends on more than one anti-apoptotic protein. CONCLUSIONS: The inhibitor toolkit provides a rapid, inexpensive and simple means to assess the chemosensitivity of tumour cells and in conjunction with BH3 profiling offers much potential in personalising cancer therapy
