Is there a relationship between the use of motorcycles and the level of development of countries?

Our paper aims to analyse the hypothesis that locations with a higher Human Development Index (HDI) present lower rates of motorcycle use. For this we use an econometric model for 117 countries on five continents for the years 2013, 2015 and 2018. We assume that when a country reaches a higher level of development, its population is more likely to experience improvements in the quality of life, which also affects the quality of individual transportation, public transport and roads. Increases in income discourage the use of motorcycles, mainly due to their low safety and comfort features. Our results indicate that rates of motorcycle use in countries increase as HDI rises, before reaching a maximum point and then declining. Therefore, this evidence suggests that a certain degree of development discourages the use of this means of transport in favour of others

Modulation of peptidases by 2,4-diamine-quinazoline derivative induces cell death in the amitochondriate parasite Trichomonas vaginalis

Trichomonas vaginalis is an amitochondriate protozoan and the agent of human trichomoniasis, the most prevalent non-viral sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the world. In this study we showed that 2,4-diamine-quinazoline derivative compound (PH100) kills T. vaginalis. PH100 showed activity against fresh clinical and American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) T. vaginalis isolates with no cytotoxicity against cells (HMVI, 3T3-C1 and VERO) and erythrocytes. In addition, PH100 showed synergistic action with metronidazole, indicating that these compounds act by different mechanisms. When investigating the mechanism of action of PH100 to ATCC 30236, apoptosis-like characteristics were observed, such as phosphatidylserine exposure, membrane alterations, and modulation of gene expression and activity of peptidases related to apoptosis. The apoptosis-like cell death features were not observed for the fresh clinical isolate treated with PH100 revealing distinct profiles. Our data revealed the heterogeneity among T. vaginalis isolates and contribute with the understanding of mechanisms of cell death in pathogenic eukaryotic organisms without mitochondria

During the Spring 2019 semester, Dr. Noah Asher Golden\u27s Teaching of Writing K-12 students partnered with the Journalism class at Yorba Academy for the Arts. Through collaboration over a four-month period, Chapman\u27s future teachers and Yorba\u27s junior high journalists engaged a deep writing process to write a series of features, editorials, and news articles related to a number of global issues. Thank you to Principal Preciado-Martin, former principal Tracy Knibb, Mrs. Andrea Lopez, Mrs. Kori Shelton, and the Lloyd E. and Elisabeth H. Klein Family Foundation for supporting this project.https://digitalcommons.chapman.edu/yorba-chapman/1004/thumbnail.jp

Ser ético faz você mais feliz?

This paper proposes a contemporary assessment of Aristotle’s discussion of ethics and happiness for 11 large cultural groups. Our study adopts the division of cultural regions proposed by Fellmann et al. (1997) and World Value Survey’s subjective well-being and virtues data of 60.000 individuals for 55 countries between 2010 to 2014. The binary response model (probit) has life satisfaction as the dependent variable and as explanatory variables a group of ethical virtues. Such ethical virtues explore the perception that individuals have on issues related to humanitarianism, race, religion, and tax behavior; while intellectual virtues look at art, music, and education. Our results show that jointly (globally), countries presenting the virtues proposed by Aristotle is positively correlated with happiness. Additionally, our regional estimates suggest that cultural factors may influence which ethical values and behaviors are relevant to our level of life satisfaction in each macroregion.

Distinct strains of Staphylococcus aureus lead to different inflammatory response patterns in a murine model of intradermal infection

Staphylococcus aureus infection may lead to the development of soft tissue damage. It has been evaluated in other researches using different animal models. In addition, the inflammatory response developed by the host organism facing an infection by this pathogen has been analyzed and neutrophils have been linked to the immune response developed. In this study, we aimed to compare the inflammatory response developed by the host induced by an intradermal infection with a methicillin-resistant strain of Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) or a methicillin-susceptible strain of Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA). Mice euthanasia occurred in the following times: 6, 24, 48 and 96 hours of infection; the cell number and the cytokine release were evaluated. Our results showed that infections by different strains of Staphylococcus aureus lead to different immune response degrees. Although MRSA infection induces higher neutrophil recruitment to the infection site and higher inflammatory response in the draining lymph node, the increased production of TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-6 and IL-1β in the lymph node 6 hours after the infection was observed only in MSSA infected animals. Considering the data, MSSA may have mechanisms to prevent neutrophil recruitment to the infection site.
