This paper presents the integration of lithic technology, anthracological and zooarchaeological analyzes in sector B of the site Alero Deodoro Roca, located in the Sierras Pampeanas Australes, Córdoba, Argentina. It aims to compare the assemblages recovered in ADR to infer about the practices that connected people to these materials during the ca. 2970 years AP. Statistical tools were used to analyze the ubiquity, taxonomic richness and spatial distribution of material culture in the excavated sectors. Our results allow us to infer about general strategies of gathering and use of firewood, a hunting practice focused in guanacos and the presence of lithic material associated with the hunting and processing of other materials (like bones and woods). The quantitative integration of these lines of evidence together with the analysis of intrasite spatial distribution allows us to have a more complete view of the possible activities carried out in the ADR at a particular moment.

Effects of Force Modulation on Large Muscles during Human Cycling

    Get PDF
Voluntary force modulation is defined as the ability to tune the application of force during motion. However, the mechanisms behind this modulation are not yet fully understood. In this study, we examine muscle activity under various resistance levels at a fixed cycling speed. The main goal of this research is to identify significant changes in muscle activation related to the real-time tuning of muscle force. This work revealed significant motor adaptations of the main muscles utilized in cycling as well as positive associations between the force level and the temporal and spatial inter-cycle stability in the distribution of sEMG activity. From these results, relevant biomarkers of motor adaptation could be extracted for application in clinical rehabilitation to increase the efficacy of physical therapy. This research was funded by Generalitat Valenciana (grant number GV/2019/025) and the Kakenhi National Japanese Grant for Early-Career Scientists (grant number 18K18431)

In this context, an information system about the structural support on the different Spanish regions is an instrument that will allow the monitoring and evaluation of the total amount of support and its distribution. Methodologically, the work made is based on the estimate of the regional distribution of structural support indicators. Moreover, once agreed the co-financing criteria for regions that have lost their Objective 1 condition, it is obtained the annual lost in Spain caused by the EU enlargement for the current financial framework 2007-2013

Voltage H8 control of a vanadium redox flow battery

Redox flow batteries are one of the most relevant emerging large-scale energy storage technologies. Developing control methods for them is an open research topic; optimizing their operation is the main objective to be achieved. In this paper, a strategy that is based on regulating the output voltage is proposed. The proposed architecture reduces the number of required sensors. A rigorous design methodology that is based on linear H8 synthesis is introduced. Finally, some simulations are presented in order to analyse the performance of the proposed control system. The results show that the obtained controller guaranties robust stability and performance, thus allowing the battery to operate over a wide range of operating conditions. Attending to the design specifications, the controlled voltage follows the reference with great accuracy and it quickly rejects the effect of sudden current changes.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Genetic Variation and Genotype by Environment Interaction of Crown Rust Resistance in Annual Ryegrass (\u3ci\u3eLolium multiflorum\u3c/i\u3e Lam.)

The genetic variation and genotype by environment interaction of crown rust resistance of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) was evaluated at two locations in Argentina, as part of the breeding programme in progress at our Institute. Forty half sib families originated from commercial tetraploid cultivars, were grown from seeds in a greenhouse during autumn 1999. At the stage of tillering initiation forty eight plants/familiy were randomly selected and transplanted as spaced plant trial in a randomized design with three replicates, at the two locations. All plants were scored for a range of morphological and phytopatological attributes. The severity of crown rust and the winter dry matter production were assessed on each plant. Crown rust resistance at both evaluation dates, was highly heritable and not affected by environment interaction. By contrast, winter dry matter showed a large family by location interaction and a high environmental influence. The results of the present study indicated that important progress in crown rust resistance in annual ryegrass can be achieved through phenotypic recurrent selection

Power quality improvement through a UPQC and a resonant observer-based mimo control strategy

    Get PDF
Performance degradation is, in general, regarded as a power quality problem. One solution to recover grid performance is through the application of a unified power quality conditioner (UPQC). Although these devices are multi-input/multi-output (MIMO) systems, the most common control strategies consist of two decoupled controllers, which neglect the coupling effects and add uncertainty to the system. For this reason, this paper proposes a multivariable resonant observer-based control strategy of a UPQC system. This method includes all significant coupling effects between this system and the grid. This strategy results in a stability-based compensator, which differs from recently proposed strategies that are based on signal calculation and cannot assure closed-loop stability. In addition, this paper introduces a simplified controller tuning strategy based on optimal conventional methods without losing closed-loop performance. It implies that the controller can be easily tuned, despite the complexity of the MIMO dynamic model. The UPQC with the resonant observer is verified on an experimental setup for a single-phase system, obtaining three relevant results for power quality improvement: (1) harmonics compensation tested with a total harmonic distortion limit of 5%; (2) sags and swells mitigation; and (3) power factor correction, achieving a unitary value on the grid side.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
