The aim of this article is to explore the interest aroused by the Herculaneum papyri among Spanish intellectuals in the 18th and 19th centuries. For this purpose, the authors draw on the testimony of travellers, scholars and prominent writers like Francisco Pérez Báyer, Nicolás de Azara, Esteban de Arteaga, Leandro Fernández de Moratín, Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, Pedro Montengón and Juan Andrés y Morell. While the first five writers reflect upon the topic in a general manner, Montegón and Andrés do deal with it in greater detail

Drawing the Architectural Heritage on the Coast of the Mediterranean (1936-39)

During the civil war (1936-39) was built a network of defensive settlements on the coast in anticipation of attacks enemies, forming the so-called 'wall Mediterranean', because of its similarity with the Wall Atlantic of the World War II. These enclaves were composed of groups of batteries, bunkers and buildings. This communication comes to inventory and draw the remains of more than 50 architectures that are located in the Valencian South Coast (from Denia to Torrevieja), documenting the first ruins of hormigion armed with our history. It's a set of military settlements anti-aircraft, mostly scattered coastal rural, which are a great heritage and landscape value, and from which planes haven't been preserved. It is to lift current state record of them all, proceeding to its typological classification, in order to contribute to its assessment and protection on the grounds that they constitute a legacy of architectural heritage that increases our cultural memory.history

Filter Response of Resonant Waveguide Dielectric Gratings at Plane-Wave Conical Incidence

    Get PDF
An accurate and efficient formulation is presented for the electromagnetic analysis of dielectric waveguide gratings under plane-wave conical incidence. An arbitrary number of dielectric bars can be placed inside each one-dimension periodic cell, including the effect of dielectric losses. The reflectance of a dielectric waveguide grating under conical incidence is compared with theoretical results presented by other authors, finding a very good agreement. A single-layer reflection filter has been designed centered at λ0=1.5 μm whose spectral and angular responses are shown. For this structure, the effect of the asymmetry of the distribution of the refraction index in the reflectance has been analyzed, observing a splitting of the reflection peak around the design wavelength. Finally it is discussed the equivalence between a volume grating and a shallow surface-relief grating, providing two examples of designing prescriptions

Thermal decomposition of single hydroxychlorides of nickel, copper and cobalto

    Get PDF
The thermal decomposition reactions of Ni(OH)Cl.l½H20 in still air and in nitrogen and β-CO2(OH)3Cl and γ-Cu2(OH)3Cl in nitrogen atmosphere, have been studied by DTA and TG analysis, and the intermediates and final products have been characterized by x-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscop. The thermal evolution ot the above indicated compounds under dynamic vacuum conditions has be en studied with the aid of an x-ray high teaperature diffraction chamber. They reveals that in these conditions, the pure metallic nickel, copper and cobalt can be obtained at comparative low temperature. The infrared spectra of thése hydroxychlorides have been tentatively assigned

The AGN Luminosity Fraction in Merging Galaxies

    Get PDF
Galaxy mergers are key events in galaxy evolution, often causing massive starbursts and fueling active galactic nuclei (AGN). In these highly dynamic systems, it is not yet precisely known how much starbursts and AGN respectively contribute to the total luminosity, at what interaction stages they occur, and how long they persist. Here we estimate the fraction of the bolometric infrared (IR) luminosity that can be attributed to AGN by measuring and modeling the full ultraviolet to far-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in up to 33 broad bands for 24 merging galaxies with the Code for Investigating Galaxy Emission. In addition to a sample of 12 confirmed AGN in late-stage mergers, found in the InfraredInfrared ArrayArray SatelliteSatellite Revised Bright Galaxy Sample or Faint Source Catalog, our sample includes a comparison sample of 12 galaxy mergers from the SpitzerSpitzer Interacting Galaxies Survey, mostly early-stage. We perform identical SED modeling of simulated mergers to validate our methods, and we supplement the SED data with mid-IR spectra of diagnostic lines obtained with SpitzerSpitzer InfraRed Spectrograph. The estimated AGN contributions to the IR luminosities vary from system to system from 0% up to 91% but are significantly greater in the later-stage, more luminous mergers, consistent with what is known about galaxy evolution and AGN triggering.Comment: 26 pages, 10 figure

Our purpose is to assess the contribution to the Humanism of the legacy hidden for twenty centuries and appeared in one of the most interesting archaeological sites that we know now, the Villa dei Papiri at Herculaneum, buried by lava from Vesuvius in 79 AD. Since 1750, it began to be excavated and it has allowed us to discover a luxurious mansion, great value articles and the only library that has come down to us from Antiquity. This content is made up by almost two thousand rolls of papyrus written in Greek and attributed to an author born in Gadara –Syria- called Philodemus. Twenty centuries ago it brought together the followers of the school, whose main objective was the pursuit of happiness. We are convinced that the message of serenity, zest for life and tolerance of Epicurus is more alive than ever. Our aim is to make available to a great number of people, not just to those interested in Philosophy, Literature, History and Archeology of Hellenistic and Imperial Periods, but also any educated person with humanistic concerns this rich and complex legacy

Basement structure of the Hontomín CO2 Geological storage facility (Burgos, Spain): integration of microgravity & 3D seismic reflection data

    Get PDF
The structure of the Hontomín CO2 geological storage research facility has been addressed combining 3D seismic reflection data, borehole information and microgravity data. The integrated interpretation constrains the basement structural setting geometry and that of the sedimentary succession. The study unravels the deep structure and topography of the basement and quantifies the thickness of the Triassic Keuper evaporites. We describe a half-graben setting filled with Keuper evaporites (up to 2000 m) forming an extensional forced fold. Three set of faults are identified with two main fault systems compartmentalizing the area into three differentiated blocks. These faults have been interpreted to be reactivated normal faults that have led to the formation of the Hontomín dome. The datasets in this work have been funded by Fundación Ciudad de la Energía (Spanish Government, www.ciuden.es) and by the European Union through the “European Energy Programme for Recovery” and the Compostilla OXYCFB300 project. NS3 genomic sequencing and phylogenetic analysis as alternative to a commercially available assay to reliably determine hepatitis C virus subtypes 1a and 1b

    Get PDF
Objective: To evaluate the use of hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS3 sequencing as alternative to the comercially available Versant HCV 2.0 reverse hybridization line-probe assay (LiPA 2.0) to determine HCV genotype 1 (HCV-1) subtypes. Patients and methods: A cohort of 104 patients infected by HCV-1 according to LiPA 2.0 was analyzed in a cross-sectional study conducted in patients seen from January 2012 to June 2016 at an outpatient clinic in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Results: The samples were included within well supported subtype clades: 64 with HCV-1b and 39 with HCV-1a infection. Twenty of the HCV-1a infected patientes were included in a supported sub-clade “1” and 19 individuals were among the basal sub-clade “2”. LiPA 2.0 failed to subtype HCV-1 in 20 (19.2%) individuals. Subtype classification determined by NS3 direct sequencing showed that 2/18 (11.1%) of the HCV-1a-infected patients as determined by LiPA 2.0 were in fact infected by HCV-1b. Of the HCV-1b-infected according to LiPA 2.0, 10/66 (15.2%) patients showed HCV-1a infection according to NS3 sequencing. Overall misclassification was 14.3% (κ-index for the concordance with NS3 sequencing = 0.635). One (1%) patient was erroneously genotyped as HCV-1 and was revealed as HCV genotype 4 infection. Conclusions: Genomic sequencing of the HCV NS3 region represents an adequate alternative since it provides reliable genetic information. It even distinguishes between HCV-1a clades related to resistance-associated substitutions to HCV protease inhibitors, it provides reliable genetic information for genotyping/subgenotyping and simultaneously allows to determine the presence of resistance-associated substitutions to currently recommended DAAs.Fil: Neukam, Karin.
