This article is a brief revisionist study about the history of Antitrust Law, in which we try to demonstrate that, in opposition to what the academic mainstream affirms, the antitrust statutes have not been edited to enforce free competition and/or to maximize the consumer welfare, but to protect inefficient firms who could not survive in a genuine free market, where competition was intense and produced extremely beneficial outcomes for the consumers: constant innovation, increase of production, better products/services and lower prices.

Isolated right ventricular infarction: a diagnostic challenge

A 73-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency room due to sudden-onset dyspnoea, altered mental status and haemodynamic instability. ECG showed a junctional rhythm, T-wave inversion in I, aVL and V2-V6 (present in a previous ECG), and no ST/T changes in the right precordial leads. Transthoracic echocardiography, however, revealed a severe depression of global systolic function of right ventricle with akinesia of free wall and a normal left ventricular function. Coronary angiography showed an occlusion of the proximal segment of the right coronary artery, which was treated with balloon angioplasty, and a chronic lesion of the anterior descending artery. The patient had a good recovery and was discharged on the 14th day. Myocardial perfusion scintigraphy (stress and rest) was performed a month later, showing a fixed perfusion defect in the apex and anterior wall (medium-apical), with no signs of ischaemia.(undefined)info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF

Introduction: The majority of parvovirus B19 infections are asymptomatic. In childhood, however, they may present as the fifth disease and in adults their manifestations can vary from mild, non-specific, cold-like symptoms to other forms of presentations. Papular-purpuric gloves and socks syndrome (PPGSS) is an uncommon form of parvovirus B19 infection, characterized by symmetric, pruriginous and painful erythema and edema of feet and hands. Generally, systemic symptoms are usually mild and dissemination to other body regions occurs in only 50% of the cases. The rash gradually progresses to petechiae and purpura delineating well demarcated "socks" and "gloves" on both feet and hands. The diagnosis is predominantly based on the clinical features. Serologic conversion is not considered as evidence of parvovirus B19 infection and histopathological findings from lesional skin are not specific. There are no definite antiviral drugs or vaccines against parvovirus. Patients with PPGSS require only symptomatic therapy. Case Report: We report the case of a 30-year-old female with this characteristic erythema caused by the parvovirus B19. Nevertheless, this case is remarkable because the patient had significant systemic manifestations and an exuberant perineal and oropharyngeal involvement. Further, the erythema assumed a bullous expression that has not been so commonly reported. A biopsy was performed which was unspecific and the diagnosis was confirmed with the serology and molecular detection of the virus in blood sample as well as on mouth swab. Our patient needed treatment to control pain and pruritus, fever was self-limited. Conclusion: A high index of suspicion is essential to diagnose patients with this syndrome. Early recognition can prevent unproductive measures and the good management of this infection.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

In vitro evaluation of alkaline lignins as antiparasitic agents and their use as an excipient in the release of benznidazole

Copyright © 2023. Published by Elsevier B.V.The Amazon rainforest is considered the largest tropical timber reserve in the world. The management of native forests in the Amazon is one of the most sensitive geopolitical issues today, given its national and international dimension. In this work, we obtained and characterized physicochemical lignins extracted from branches and leaves of Protium puncticulatum and Scleronema micranthum. In addition, we evaluated in vitro its potential as an antioxidant, cytotoxic agent against animal cells and antiparasitic against promastigotes of Leishmania amazonensis, trypomastigotes of T. cruzi and against Plasmodium falciparum parasites sensitive and resistant to chloroquine. The results showed that the lignins obtained are of the GSH type and have higher levels of guaiacyl units. However, they show structural differences as shown by spectroscopic analysis and radar charts. As for biological activities, they showed antioxidant potential and low cytotoxicity against animal cells. Antileishmanial/trypanocidal assays have shown that lignins can inhibit the growth of promastigotes and trypomastigotes in vitro. The lignins in this study showed low anti-Plasmodium falciparum activity against susceptible strains of Plasmodium falciparum and were able to inhibit the growth of the chloroquine-resistant strain. And were not able to inhibit the growth of Schistosoma mansoni parasites. Finally, lignins proved to be promising excipients in the release of benznidazole. These findings show the potential of these lignins not yet studied to promote different biological activities.publishersversionpublishe

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
Since ancient times, parrots and their allies (Psittacidae) have fascinated Europeans by their striking colors and notable ability to interact with human beings. The discovery of the New World added new species to the international exotic animal trade, which for many centuries had brought beasts to Europe from Africa and the Orient. Lacking large mammals, tropical America participated in this trade with its most appealing species, essentially felines, primates and birds - especially parrots - which were shipped in large numbers. It should be noted, however, that at times these birds were not well liked. In fact, according to documents from colonial Brazil, only the ants rank higher than parrots as the animals most often mentioned as agricultural pests. On the other hand, some of these birds were so chatty that people suspected them to be demonic or possessed animals, since only three classes of beings - angels, men and demons - have the ability to speak. Nowadays, several Psittacidae still constitute a threat to agriculture, and the suspicion that extremely talkative birds were demon possessed has also survived. More than a joke or a mere curiosity, this belief exemplifies how intricate man’s relationships with the “natural world” may be. In this sense, the existence of birds that are able to speak adds a further twist to these relationships, demonstrating that the problem of establishing a boundary between the animal and the human does not only involve primates, but also includes some unusual zoological species
