Asymbiotic seed germination and in vitro propagation of Brasiliorchis picta
Seed storage method for in vitro germination and propagation from leaves of Brasiliorchis picta was developed. Seeds were harvested and stored at -20 and -80°C for 1, 3, 6, and 12 months and were germinated on Knudson C (KC), Murashige and Skoog (MS), half-strength MS (½ MS macro- and micro-nutrients), and woody plant medium (WPM). Seeds stored at -20°C, the recommended temperature for seed banks, had a high germination rate (76.0%) when cultivated in WPM after 12 months of storage. WPM is the best medium for seed germination and seedling development for both harvested and stored seeds, regardless of storage time and storage temperature. Whole leaf and leaf transversal thin cell layers (tTCL) from 3-month-old in vitro grown protocorms were cultured in ½ MS supplemented with 6-benzyladenine (BA; 2.5, 5.0 and 10.0 μM) and thidiazuron (TDZ; 3.0, 6.0 and 9.0 μM) for 12 weeks. The highest frequency of regenerated protocorm-like bodies (PLBs) from explants (70.0%) occurred when whole leaves were cultured in medium containing 5.0 μM BA, whereas the best response for leaf TCL was with the basal section in medium containing 9 μM TDZ, in which PLBs developed in all regions of leaves. Plantlets were successfully acclimatized (with a survival rate of 97%) when vermiculite was used as a substrate.Key words: Endangered species, conservation, germination rate, leaf explant, culture medium, micropropagation, Orchidaceae, thin cell layer
ESTRUTURA DO COMPONENTE DE REGENERAÇÃO NATURAL E ARBÓREO DE DOIS MANGUEZAIS NO ESTADO DO PARANÁ
http://dx.doi.org/10.5902/1980509821100We analyzed the structures of two mangrove forests of Paraná (Brazil) (Antonina Bay and Guaratuba Bay), considering adult trees component and regeneration component. In each area, we marked three sub-areas and sampled five plots of 10 x 10 m, equivalent to 0.05 ha to adults trees component and and fifteen 1 x 1m sub-plots to assess the regeneration component. Avicennia schaueriana, Rhizophora mangle and Laguncularia racemosa exhibited distinct dominance and relative density between the areas. Mangroves of Antonina and Guaratuba differed both in the structure of natural regeneration as the tree component. The Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA) show that differences between areas in relation to abiotic variables of soil are strongly related to the structural parameters of trees. The different types of mangrove soil are the most significant factor in the differentiation between the mangrove areas since influences the salinity values and consequent adaptability of plants.http://dx.doi.org/10.5902/1980509821100Esse estudo avaliou comparativamente os parâmetros fitossociológicos da regeneração natural e da vegetação arbórea em dois manguezais distintos no Estado do Paraná, um pertencente à Baía de Paranaguá (manguezal de Antonina) e outro à Baía de Guaratuba (manguezal de Guaratuba). Protected areas: A focus on Brazilian freshwater biodiversity
Brazil has a variety of aquatic ecosystems and rich freshwater biodiversity, but these components have been constantly damaged by the expansion of unsustainable activities. An array of different conservation strategies is needed, especially the creation of protected areas (PAs, hereafter). However, Brazil's PAs are biased towards terrestrial ecosystems and we argue that current PAs have limited efficacy in the protection of freshwater biodiversity. New PAs should better consider aquatic environments, covering entire basins, rivers and other freshwater habitats. We recommend ways to implement these PAs and provide guidance to avoid social impacts. Freshwater systems in Brazil provide essential goods and services but these ecosystems are being rapidly degraded and will be lost if not adequately protected. © 2018 The Authors. Previous issue date: 2010-01-25A general goal in community ecology is to understand how communities are
organized in space and time. An aspect of great interest is to evaluate how concordant
are the patterns of beta diversity depicted by different biological groups. If two
taxonomic groups present a similar spatial/temporal structure, only one of these groups
can be used as a surrogate group in conservation efforts or bioassessments. Also, a
strong correspondence between biological groups and physical classifications of the
habitat could help us to understand the reasons for spatial organization of communities.
Moreover, if communities respond to a priori classifications based on geological and
environmental features of the habitats, the selection of priority areas for conservation
distributed on the classes of a classification scheme could maximize the conservation of
overall biodiversity. Finally, to understand the main processes driving the organization
of communities, the relative role of different set of predictor variables can be
simultaneously evaluated. If species compositions are mainly predicted by
environmental variables then one can conclude that species sorting mechanisms are the
main drivers of community structure. On the other hand, if variables that represent
spatial structure of the environments are the main predictors of variation in species
composition, then neutral processes may be invoked to explain the structure of the
biological group under analysis. Therefore, the main goals of this thesis are: (i) to
evaluate the concordance among distinct biological groups; (ii) to evaluate the
correspondence between a priori physical classifications of the habitat and the
composition of assemblages and; (iii) to evaluate the relative role of environmental and
spatial predictors on the structure of local assemblages in a Neotropical floodplain. For
that, we used data sets on six biological groups (fish, benthic macroinvertebrates,
aquatic macrophytes, zooplankton, phytoplankton, and periphyton) which were gathered
during 2000 and 2001 in up to 36 aquatic environments of the Upper Paraná River
floodplain. Patterns of assemblage concordance were frequently observed. The main
mechanisms responsible for cross-taxon concordance were a similar response to
environmental/spatial gradients and biological interactions between species. The
mechanisms were identified after controlling for the effect of environmental/spatial
variables on the cross-taxon concordance and after evaluating the level of concordance
between species from each group that most likely are linked by biological interactions.
However, the levels of assemblage concordance were weak and varied conspicuously
with time. These results highlight that the use of surrogate groups is a flawed strategy to support conservation efforts in the Upper Paraná River floodplain. Nevertheless, the
classification scheme of the floodplain, considering mainly limnological and geological
aspects, was efficient to represent the structure of different aquatic assemblages. Thus,
conservation efforts and bioassessments of the aquatic flora and fauna can use this
classification scheme. However, the temporal variability also affected the consistency of
the correspondence and this issue should be further investigated. On the other hand,
temporal variables were not effective in predicting the structure of different biological
assemblages. Environmental and spatial variables were generally more important, but
also with low predictive power. Spatial variables were particularly important for large
organisms with low dispersal ability, such as sedentary fish and aquatic plants. On the
other hand, compared to spatial predictors, environmental variables were more
important to explain the structure of small-bodied organisms with high dispersal ability
(such as micro-algae) and organisms with migratory behavior. Nevertheless, all
variables had a low predictive power, probably due to the low extent of the
environmental and spatial gradients and to the lack of variables that represent relevant
processes for determining the structure of aquatic assemblages in floodplains.
organizadas no espaço e no tempo.
Porém, a
Increasing reality of species distribution models of consumers by including its food resources
Species distribution models are not usually calibrated with biotic predictors. Our study question is: does the use of biotic predictors matter in predicting species distribution? We aim to assess the importance of biotic predictors in the output of distribution models of the Brazilian squirrel (Sciurus aestuans) throughout South America based on fruits of Syagrus romanzoffiana – the most consumed food resource. We hypothesized that the distribution model of S. aestuans using its main food resource as a biotic predictor will be more accurate in comparison with the output of the model without the biotic predictor. We built three different distribution models: (i) distribution of S. romanzoffiana; (ii) distribution of S. aestuans without biotic predictor; and (iii) distribution of S. aestuans with biotic predictor. We evaluated performance scores, number of presence pixels and concordance between suitability maps. We found that performance scores may not vary between models with different predictors, but the output map changed significantly. We also found that models with biotic predictors seem to vary less in presence pixels. Furthermore, the main variable in the distribution model was the biotic variable. We conclude that the knowledge of a species’ biology and ecology can make better predictions of species distribution models mainly by avoiding commission errors
In this paper, we explore the theoretical aspects of Hubbels
Neutral Theory of Biodiversity and Biogeography (NTB), showing the results of a scientometric survey
about the impact of this theory on the scientifi c community, its developments, critiques and perspectives. The
NTB can contribute to developing null hypotheses and provides a strong conceptual and analytical tool in
ecology, especially for the understanding of communities in which some clear spatially-structured mechanisms
play an important role. The most provocative premise of NTB is that individuals from different species are
ecologically equivalent. This poses a contrary view to the classical niche theory to explain the structure of
biological communities, and refutes the theory of evolution by natural selection. The book in which Hubbell
presented the NTB has had up to date a high impact over scientifi c literature. Hubbells book was cited by
1,128 scientifi c articles belonging to 239 scientifi c journals over 21 different subject categories. NTB impacted
several scientifi c fi elds, but was debated mainly by ecologists and conservation biologists. Criticism against
NTB is frequent, mainly direct at its main axiom, the ecological equivalence of the species. In spite of that
and of the fact that NTB was refuted in many papers, there are papers giving support to its predictions, and
presenting theoretical advances and new analytical tools. Even the opposers of the NTB consider it an easily
testable elegant theory that was a major contribution to
ecology.
O livro no qual Hubbell apresentou a TNB teve (e
