    PERCEPTIONS OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED AND ORGANIC FOODS AND PROCESSES: NORTH DAKOTA COLLEGE STUDENTS

    Perceptions of genetically modified (GM) and organic food among North Dakota college students were elicited and compared. Participants responded to one of two survey instruments containing identical wording except for reference to genetic modification or organic, after reading a primer defining the term used in their instrument. Participants' indicated their level of agreement with statements in the construct areas of health, environment, ethics, regulation, and risk. Responses were compared among survey instruments and to responses to previous surveys of Americans and of shoppers in North Dakota. Organic food was perceived as a healthier and safer choice. Organic practices were perceived to be more environmentally sound. Respondents expressed a level of concern over the unknown effects GM food could have on the environment and society as a whole. However, participants generally felt that genetic modification could be used effectively and valued some of the associated benefits.     High technology industries with high failure costs commonly use redundancy as a means to reduce risk. Redundant systems, whether similar or dissimilar, are susceptible to Common Cause Failures (CCF). CCF is not always considered in the design effort and, therefore, can be a major threat to success. There are several aspects to CCF which must be understood to perform an analysis which will find hidden issues that may negate redundancy. This paper will provide definition, types, a list of possible causes and some examples of CCF. Requirements and designs from NASA projects will be used in the paper as examples

    Alzheimer disease genetic risk factor APOE e4, and cognitive abilities in 111,739 UK Biobank participants

    Background: the apolipoprotein (APOE) e4 locus is a genetic risk factor for dementia. Carriers of the e4 allele may be more vulnerable to conditions that are independent risk factors for cognitive decline, such as cardiometabolic diseases. Objective: we tested whether any association with APOE e4 status on cognitive ability was larger in older ages or in those with cardiometabolic diseases. Subjects: UK Biobank includes over 500,000 middle- and older aged adults who have undergone detailed medical and cognitive phenotypic assessment. Around 150,000 currently have genetic data. We examined 111,739 participants with complete genetic and cognitive data. Methods: baseline cognitive data relating to information processing speed, memory and reasoning were used. We tested for interactions with age and with the presence versus absence of type 2 diabetes (T2D), coronary artery disease (CAD) and hypertension. Results: in several instances, APOE e4 dosage interacted with older age and disease presence to affect cognitive scores. When adjusted for potentially confounding variables, there was no APOE e4 effect on the outcome variables. Conclusions: future research in large independent cohorts should continue to investigate this important question, which has potential implications for aetiology related to dementia and cognitive impairment

    Chronological control and centennial-scale climatic subdivisions of the Last Glacial Termination in the western Mediterranean region

    The Last Glacial Termination is marked by changing environmental conditions affected by abrupt and rapid climate oscillations, such as Heinrich Stadial 1 (HS1), which is characterized by extremely low sea surface temperatures (SST) and significant changes in northern hemisphere terrestrial landscape (e.g., vegetation) and human dispersion. Previous studies show that overall cold/dry conditions occurred during HS1, but the lack of high-resolution records precludes whether climate was stable or instead characterized by instability. A high-resolution paleoclimatic record from the Padul wetland (southern Iberian Peninsula), supported by a high-resolution chronology and contrasted with other records from southern Europe and the Mediterranean region, shows 1) that the age boundaries of HS1 in this area occurred at similar to 18.0 kyr BP (median age = 17,970 cal yr BP; mean age = 18,030 +/- 330 cal yr BP) and similar to 15.2 kyr BP (median age = 15,210 cal yr BP; mean age = 15,200 +/- 420 cal yr BP) and 2) that climate during HS1 was non-stationary and centennial-scale variability in moisture is superimposed on this overall cold climatic period. In this study, we improve the pollen sampling resolution with respect to previous studies on the same Padul-15-05 sedimentary core and suggest a novel subdivision of HS1 in 7 sub-phases, including: i) 3 sub-phases (a.1-a.3) during an arid early phase (HS1a; similar to 18.4-17.2 kyr BP), ii) a relatively humid middle phase (HS1b; similar to 17.2-16.9 kyr BP), and iii) 3 sub-phases (c.1-c.3) during an arid late phase (HS1c; similar to 16.9-15.7 kyr BP). This climatic subdivision is regionally supported by SST oscillations from the Mediterranean Sea, suggesting a strong land-sea coupling. A cyclostratigraphic analysis of pollen data between 20 and 11 kyr BP indicates that the climate variability and the proposed subdivisions characterized by similar to 2000 and similar to 800-yr periodicities could be related to solar forcing controlling climate in this area. We show that under certain restrictions these models can be mapped to quantum spin chains with twisted boundary conditions.     Tari Peksi Eka Kapti merupakan tari yang terinspirasi dari satwa identitas Kabupaten Sleman yaitu Burung Punglor. Tarian ini diciptakan pada tahun 2014 oleh Mila Rosinta.Tari Peksi Eka Kapti adalah aktualisasi seekor burung sebagai simbol keseimbangan ekosistem dalam konteks satu kekuatan dan kebersamaan. Tarian ini diharapkan bisa diapresiasi masyarakat khususnya pelajar SD, SMP, dan SMK/SMA agar ikut berperan serta dalam upaya melestarikan aset identitas Kabupaten Sleman sebagai pembelajaran atau ekstra kurikuler di sekolah maupun di sanggar. Oleh sebab itu Pemerintah Kabupaten Sleman membuat sebuah program pengenalan dan pelestarian identitas daerah salah satunya dengan membuat sebuah karya tari yang inspirasinya dari Burung Punglor.Permasalahan yang ingin dikaji dalam penelitian ini adalah bagaimana pembelajaran tari di SMP N 3 Mlati dan SMA N 1 Seyegan (Studi Kasus: Sosialisasi Tari Peksi Eka Kapti di Kabupaten Sleman). Untuk membantu menemukan jawaban dari permasalahan adalah dengan menggunakan pendekatan multidisiplin sosiologi dan pendekatan koreografi. Tari Peksi Eka Kapti diajarkan di SMP N 3 Mlati dan SMA N 1 Seyegan sebagai sebuah ekstra kurikuler atau pengembangan diri sekolah dengan menggunakan metode-metode pengajaran yang cukup baik yaitu metode analisis, global, imitasi dan campuran yang diharapkan bahwa siswa yang berlatih bisa mencapai kualitas seperti yang dicontohkan. Strategi pembelajaran yang dilakukan kedua sekolah tersebut sama yaitu guru atau pengajar bercerita tentang tarian tersebut, memutar dokumentasi, mempraktekkan dan menjelaskan motif maupun transisi pada tarian (tahap penyampaian materi), memperkenalkan tehnik penjiwaan, pendalaman materi dan tahap yang terakhir adalah ujian hasil pembelajaran tari

    Transmembrane orientation of an early biosynthetic form of acetylcholine receptor delta subunit determined by proteolytic dissection in conjunction with monoclonal antibodies

    The transmembrane topology of acetylcholine receptor (AChR) delta subunit, synthesized in vitro and co-translationally integrated into dog pancreas rough microsomal membranes, was studied using limited proteolysis and domain-specific immunoprecipitation. Forty-four kilodaltons (kd) of the 65-kd delta subunit comprise a single fragment that is inaccessible to exhaustive proteolytic digestion from the cytoplasmic surface of the membrane by trypsin, chymotrypsin, thermolysin, and pronase. Previously, we have shown that this 44-kd “protected” fragment contains the amino terminus of the intact molecule and all of the core oligosaccharides (Anderson, D.J., P. Walter, and G. Blobel (1982) J. Cell Biol. 93: 501–506). Here we demonstrate that this domain can be further dissected into a 26-kd fragment, together with low molecular weight material, when the membranes are rendered permeable to trypsin by low concentrations of deoxycholate (Kreibich, G., P. Debey, and D. D. Sabatini (1973) J. Cell Biol. 58: 436–462). This 26-kd fragment contains all of the core oligosaccharides present on the intact subunit and therefore constitutes at least part, if not all, of the extracellular domain. The remaining low molecular weight material may derive from the membrane-embedded domain; our data imply that as much as 18 kd may be internal to the lipid bilayer. On the other hand, part of the cytoplasmic pole of AChR-delta can be recovered as a discrete, 12-kd fragment upon mild trypsinization of intact vesicles. We have used this 12-kd fragment to identify anti-AChR-delta monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that react with the cytoplasmic domain of this subunit. Partial proteolytic fragmentation of the AChR in vitro translation products, in topologically well defined rough microsomes, may be used as a general assay to characterize the domain specificity of anti-AChR mAbs. For example, in the case of AChR-beta, we were able to identify two mAbs that recognize extracellular and cytoplasmic fragments, respectively
