    The distribution of species range size: a stochastic process

    The major role played by environmental factors in determining the geographical range sizes of species raises the possibility of describing their long-term dynamics in relatively simple terms, a goal which has hitherto proved elusive. Here we develop a stochastic differential equation to describe the dynamics of the range size of an individual species based on the relationship between abundance and range size, derive a limiting stationary probability model to quantify the stochastic nature of the range size for that species at steady state, and then generalize this model to the species-range size distribution for an assemblage. The model fits well to several empirical datasets of the geographical range sizes of species in taxonomic assemblages, and provides the simplest explanation of species-range size distributions to date

    Does International Trade Synchronize Business Cycles?

    This paper studies the relationship between international trade and output fluctuations. The authors find evidence that the business cycles of countries that are more open to international trade are more likely to by synchronized with the business cycles of their major trading partners. A detailed study of the South Korean case shows that while business cycles are related to openness, the diversification of export destinations seems to weaken these links.     Flow equation analysis of the anisotropic Kondo model

    We use the new method of infinitesimal unitary transformations to calculate zero temperature correlation functions in the strong-coupling phase of the anisotropic Kondo model. We find the dynamics on all energy scales including the crossover behaviour from weak to strong coupling. The integrable structure of the Hamiltonian is not used in our approach. Our method should also be useful in other strong-coupling models since few other analytical methods allow the evaluation of their correlation functions on all energy scales.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 2 eps figures include

    Serious Games in Cultural Heritage

    Although the widespread use of gaming for leisure purposes has been well documented, the use of games to support cultural heritage purposes, such as historical teaching and learning, or for enhancing museum visits, has been less well considered. The state-of-the-art in serious game technology is identical to that of the state-of-the-art in entertainment games technology. As a result the field of serious heritage games concerns itself with recent advances in computer games, real-time computer graphics, virtual and augmented reality and artificial intelligence. On the other hand, the main strengths of serious gaming applications may be generalised as being in the areas of communication, visual expression of information, collaboration mechanisms, interactivity and entertainment. In this report, we will focus on the state-of-the-art with respect to the theories, methods and technologies used in serious heritage games. We provide an overview of existing literature of relevance to the domain, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the described methods and point out unsolved problems and challenges. In addition, several case studies illustrating the application of methods and technologies used in cultural heritage are presented

    Dynamic response of a flexible space beam

    Dynamic response of a candidate flexible beam for a space experiment on control of flexible structures is investigated. Studies of natural frequencies reveal a beam length in which torsion and bending frequencies virtually coincide. Eccentric tip mass causes small shifts in natural frequencies but introduces coupled torsional/bending mode shapes. Transient response studies indicate significant effects on tip responses of low damping and first bending mode excitation at higher frequencies. Steady state response suggest displacement and acceleration measurements could be made up to 5 to 12 Hz for the actuator forces/torques assumed

    Significant techniques in the processing and interpretation of ERTS-1 data

    The discipline oriented investigations underway at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) using ERTS-1 data provide an appropriate framework for the systematic evaluation of the various elements comprising a prototype multispectral data processing and analysis system. In particular such a system may be thought of as the integration of: (1) a preprocessing subsystem; (2) a spectral clustering subsystem, (3) a correlation and classification subsystem; (4) mensuration subsystem; and (5) an information management subsystem. Specific elements of this system are already operational at JSC. It is in the context of this system that technique development and application is being pursued at JSC. Aircraft, ERTS and EREP data will be utilized to refine the subsystem elements for each of the data acquisition systems or system combinations that are optimally suited for a specific Earth Resources application. The techniques reported are those that have been developed to date during the utilization of ERTS-1 data in this processing and analysis system

    Radio Pulse Properties of the Millisecond Pulsar PSR J0437-4715. I. Observations at 20cm

    We present a total of 48 minutes of observations of the nearby, bright millisecond pulsar PSR J0437-4715 taken at the Parkes radio observatory in Australia. The data were obtained at a central radio frequency of 1380 MHz using a high-speed tape recorder that permitted coherent Nyquist sampling of 50 MHz of bandwidth in each of two polarizations. Using the high time resolution available from this voltage recording technique, we have studied a variety of single-pulse properties, most for the first time in a millisecond pulsar. We find no evidence for "diffractive" quantization effects in the individual pulse arrival times or amplitudes as have been reported for this pulsar at lower radio frequency using coarser time resolution (Ables et al. 1997). Overall, we find that the single pulse properties of PSR J0437-4715 are similar to those of the common slow-rotating pulsars, even though this pulsar's magnetosphere and surface magnetic field are several orders of magnitude smaller than those of the general population. The pulsar radio emission mechanism must therefore be insensitive to these fundamental neutron star properties.Comment: 24 Postscript pages, 11 eps figures.     Gravitational waveforms from the evaporating ACO cosmic string loop

    The linearly polarized gravitational waveforms from a certain type of rotating, evaporating cosmic string - the Allen-Casper-Ottewill loop - are constructed and plotted over the lifetime of the loop. The formulas for the waveforms are simple and exact, and describe waves which attenuate self-similarly, with the amplitude and period of the waves falling off linearly with time.Comment: 30 pages, 16 figure
