EEG source imaging assists decoding in a face recognition task
EEG based brain state decoding has numerous applications. State of the art
decoding is based on processing of the multivariate sensor space signal,
however evidence is mounting that EEG source reconstruction can assist
decoding. EEG source imaging leads to high-dimensional representations and
rather strong a priori information must be invoked. Recent work by Edelman et
al. (2016) has demonstrated that introduction of a spatially focal source space
representation can improve decoding of motor imagery. In this work we explore
the generality of Edelman et al. hypothesis by considering decoding of face
recognition. This task concerns the differentiation of brain responses to
images of faces and scrambled faces and poses a rather difficult decoding
problem at the single trial level. We implement the pipeline using spatially
focused features and show that this approach is challenged and source imaging
does not lead to an improved decoding. We design a distributed pipeline in
which the classifier has access to brain wide features which in turn does lead
to a 15% reduction in the error rate using source space features. Hence, our
work presents supporting evidence for the hypothesis that source imaging
improves decoding
On the effect of friction on tibiofemoral joint kinematics
The effect of friction on nonlinear dynamics and vibration of total knee arthroplasties is yet to be investigated and understood. This research work aims at studying the influence of friction on nonlinear dynamics, friction-induced vibration, and damage of tibiofemoral joints. For this purpose, a spatial dynamic knee model is developed using an asymmetric nonlinear elastic model accounting for knee joint ligaments and a penalty contact model to compute normal contact stresses in the joint while contact detection is treated such that the associated computational time is reduced. Several friction models are considered and embedded in the dynamic model to estimate tangential friction forces in the knee joint. External loads and moments, due to the presence of all soft tissues, e.g., muscles and hip-joint reaction forces, applied to the femoral bone are determined using a musculoskeletal approach. In the post-processing stage, damage, i.e., wear and creep, are estimated using three wear models and an empirical creep formulation, respectively. In addition, a FFT analysis is performed to evaluate likely friction-induced vibration of tibiofemoral joints. Mesh density analysis is performed and the methodology is assessed against outcomes available in the literature. It can be concluded that friction influences not only the tribology, but also dynamics of the knee joint, and friction-induced vibration is likely to take place when the friction coefficient increases
On the Inelastic Collapse of a Ball Bouncing on a Randomly Vibrating Platform
We study analytically the dynamics of a ball bouncing inelastically on a
randomly vibrating platform, as a simple toy model of inelastic collapse. Of
principal interest are the distributions of the number of flights n_f till the
collapse and the total time \tau_c elapsed before the collapse. In the strictly
elastic case, both distributions have power law tails characterised by
exponents which are universal, i.e., independent of the details of the platform
noise distribution. In the inelastic case, both distributions have exponential
tails: P(n_f) ~ exp[-\theta_1 n_f] and P(\tau_c) ~ exp[-\theta_2 \tau_c]. The
decay exponents \theta_1 and \theta_2 depend continuously on the coefficient of
restitution and are nonuniversal; however as one approches the elastic limit,
they vanish in a universal manner that we compute exactly. An explicit
expression for \theta_1 is provided for a particular case of the platform noise
distribution.Comment: 32 page
Mass Expansions of Screened Perturbation Theory
The thermodynamics of massless phi^4-theory is studied within screened
perturbation theory (SPT). In this method the perturbative expansion is
reorganized by adding and subtracting a mass term in the Lagrangian. We
analytically calculate the pressure and entropy to three-loop order and the
screening mass to two-loop order, expanding in powers of m/T. The truncated
m/T-expansion results are compared with numerical SPT results for the pressure,
entropy and screening mass which are accurate to all orders in m/T. It is shown
that the m/T-expansion converges quickly and provides an accurate description
of the thermodynamic functions for large values of the coupling constant.Comment: 22 pages, 10 figure
Three-loop HTL gluon thermodynamics at intermediate coupling
We calculate the thermodynamic functions of pure-glue QCD to three-loop order
using the hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) reorganization of
finite temperature quantum field theory. We show that at three-loop order
hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory is compatible with lattice results for
the pressure, energy density, and entropy down to temperatures .
Our results suggest that HTLpt provides a systematic framework that can used to
calculate static and dynamic quantities for temperatures relevant at LHC.Comment: 24 pages, 13 figs. 2nd version: improved discussion and fixing typos.

Screened Perturbation Theory to Three Loops
The thermal physics of a massless scalar field with a phi^4 interaction is
studied within screened perturbation theory (SPT). In this method the
perturbative expansion is reorganized by adding and subtracting a mass term in
the lagrangian. We consider several different mass prescriptions that
generalize the one-loop gap equation to two-loop order. We calculate the
pressure and entropy to three-loop order and the screening mass to two-loop
order. In contrast to the weak-coupling expansion, the SPT-improved
approximations appear to converge even for rather large values of the coupling
constant.Comment: 30 pages, 10 figure
Three-loop HTL QCD thermodynamics
The hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) framework is used to
calculate the thermodynamic functions of a quark-gluon plasma to three-loop
order. This is the highest order accessible by finite temperature perturbation
theory applied to a non-Abelian gauge theory before the high-temperature
infrared catastrophe. All ultraviolet divergences are eliminated by
renormalization of the vacuum, the HTL mass parameters, and the strong coupling
constant. After choosing a prescription for the mass parameters, the three-loop
results for the pressure and trace anomaly are found to be in very good
agreement with recent lattice data down to , which are
temperatures accessible by current and forthcoming heavy-ion collision
experiments.Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures; corresponds with published version in JHE
Comparison of Current Balancing Configurations for Primary Parallel Isolated Boost Converter
Different current balancing configurations have been investigated for Primary Parallel Isolated Boost Converter (PPIBC). It has been shown that parallel branch current balancing is possible with several configurations of coupled/uncoupled inductors. Analytical expressions for branch currents have been derived for different cases of gate signal mismatch causing current imbalance. It has been observed that turn-on and turn-off delays in parallel power stages of the PPIBC have different effects in the branch currents deviating from ideal. It has also been observed that in some configurations inductance differences due to core tolerances play an important role in current imbalance. Analytical and simulation results have shown that another side effect of the gate signal delay and inductor value difference is additional voltage stress over the switches during the mismatch times. Advantages of each configuration in terms of effective current balancing, efficiency and manufacturing simplicity have been highlighted. Simulations with ideal components for each case have been carried out to confirm the analytical derivations. Experimental results have also been included to show the performances of different configurations where component non-idealities like transformer leakage inductances also become effective
