    Exobiology: The NASA program

    The goal of NASA's Exobiology Program is to understand the origin, evolution, and distribution of life in the universe. To do this, the Exobiology Program seeks to provide a critical framework and some key research to allow NASA to bear the combined talents and capabilities of the agency and the scientific community, and the unique opportunities afforded by space exploration. To provide structure and direction to the quest for answers, the Exobiology Program has instituted a comprehensive research program divided into four elements which are being implemented at several of NASA's research centers and in the university community. These program elements correspond to the four major epochs in the evolution of living systems: (1) cosmic evolution of the biogenic compounds; (2) prebiotic evolution; (3) origin and early evolution of life; and (4) evolution of advanced life. The overall research program is designed to trace the pathways leading from the origin of the universe through the major epochs in the story of life

    The prompt energy release of gamma-ray bursts using a cosmological k-correction

    The fluences of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are measured with a variety of instruments in different detector energy ranges. A detailed comparison of the implied energy releases of the GRB sample requires, then, an accurate accounting of this diversity in fluence measurements which properly corrects for the redshifting of GRB spectra. Here, we develop a methodology to ``k-correct'' the implied prompt energy release of a GRB to a fixed co-moving bandpass. This allows us to homogenize the prompt energy release of 17 cosmological GRBs (using published redshifts, fluences, and spectra) to two common co-moving bandpasses: 20-2000 keV and 0.1 keV-10 MeV (``bolometric''). While the overall distribution of GRB energy releases does not change significantly by using a k-correction, we show that uncorrected energy estimates systematically undercounts the bolometric energy by ~5% to 600%, depending on the particular GRB. We find that the median bolometric isotropic-equivalent prompt energy release is 2.2 x 10^{53} erg with an r.m.s. scatter of 0.80 dex.     Technical Efficiency of the Danish Trawl fleet: Are the Industrial Vessels Better than Others?

    Technical efficiency in the Danish trawl fishery in the North Sea is estimated for 1997 and 1998 by a stochastic production frontier model. This model allows noise when the frontier and the technical efficiency is found, which for fisheries is a reasonable assumption. The results show that the production frontier can be modelled by a translog function without time effects and a technical ineffi-ciency function. The type of fishery (industrial or consumption), size of vessel (greater or lesser than 60 GRT) and year give a good explanation for the ineffi-ciency in the fleet. The average technical efficiency is estimated to be 0.82. On average, industrial vessels have a higher technical efficiency than human con-sumption vessels, and smaller vessels have higher technical efficiency than lar-ger vessels.     Submerged Aquatic Bryophytes in Colour Lake, a Naturally Acidic Polar Lake with Occasional Year-round Ice-cover

    Colour Lake is a small, naturally acidic (pH 3.7) lake on Axel Heiberg Island (Canadian High Arctic) that experiences occasional year-round ice cover. We investigated the benthic vegetation of this lake, with a specific aim of determining whether the annual growth of benthic bryophytes reflects the state of summer ice cover. We found the bed of the lake to be almost completely covered by mosses or liverworts to a depth of 22 m. The mosses showed annual growth bands 10-30 mm in length, visible as changes in leaf density and size. Four to five bands retained recognizable leaves and measurable amounts of chlorophyll-a (chla), and up to 12 bands were recognizable from leaf scars. We could not find a consistent relationship between band length and persistence of ice cover for a given year. We suggest that this lack is due to the complex effects of ice cover on moss growth conditions, specifically on the water temperature and irradiance at depth. Photosynthetic characteristics of Calliergon over a range of light and temperature conditions, determined using pulse amplitude-modulated fluorometry, are presented in support of this argument. We conclude that moss banding patterns are an unreliable method of hindcasting episodic failure of ice to melt in Arctic lakes.Le lac Colour est un petit lac de l'île Axel Heiberg, située dans l'Extrême-Arctique canadien, dont l'acidité (pH = 3,7) est naturelle et qui reste parfois englacé toute l'année. On a étudié la végétation benthique de ce lac, dans le but précis de déterminer si la croissance annuelle des bryophytes benthiques reflète l'état de la couverture de la glace en été. On a trouvé que le lit du lac est presque entièrement recouvert de mousses ou d'hépatiques jusqu'à une profondeur de 22 m. Les mousses affichaient des bandes de croissance annuelles de 10 à 30 mm de longueur, visibles sous la forme d'un changement dans la densité et la taille de la feuille. De 4 à 5 bandes conservaient des feuilles reconnaissables et des quantités mesurables de chlorophylle-a (chla), et jusqu'à 12 bandes étaient reconnaissables d'après les cicatrices foliaires. On n'a pu trouver de rapport constant entre la longueur de la bande et la persistance du manteau glaciel pour une année donnée. On suggère que ce manque est dû aux effets complexes du manteau glaciel sur les conditions de croissance de la mousse, en particulier sur la température de l'eau et l'irradiance en profondeur. Les attributs photosynthétiques de Calliergon pour une gamme de conditions d'éclairement et de température données, déterminés par fluorimétrie par impulsions à amplitude modulée, sont présentés à l'appui de cette thèse. On conclut que les schémas de rubanement de la mousse constituent une méthode peu fiable de prévision a posteriori des interruptions épisodiques de fonte de la glace dans les lacs arctiques

    Lichens, bryophytes and terrestrial algae of the Lake Untersee Oasis (Wohlthat Massiv, Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica)

    Lake Untersee is the largest ice-covered freshwater lake in the interior of East Antarctica. The mountain oasis is situated around it in the Gruber Mts. of the Wohlthat Massif. For approximately 7,000 years the area has been free of ice and the local climate relatively stable. It is very severe, cold, and windy and dominated by intense evaporation and sublimation but with little melt. Relative humidity averages only 37%. Vegetation is sparse in the oasis and previously only poorly investigated. Two lichen species and no bryophytes were known from the area. In November-December 2018, a survey of terrestrial flora and vegetation was made. The list of lichens was completed for the area, bryophytes were found for the first time, and some terrestrial algae were collected. In total, 23 lichen species, 1 lichenicolous fungus, 1 moss, and 18 terrestrial algae were discovered for the locality. The abundance of each species within their habitats was also evaluated. The lichen flora of the Untersee Oasis is typical for continental oases and similar to other previously investigated internal territories of Dronning Maud Land, except for the very rich lichen flora of the Schirmacher Oasis

    The DiskMass Survey. I. Overview

    We present a survey of the mass surface-density of spiral disks, motivated by outstanding uncertainties in rotation-curve decompositions. Our method exploits integral-field spectroscopy to measure stellar and gas kinematics in nearly face-on galaxies sampled at 515, 660, and 860 nm, using the custom-built SparsePak and PPak instruments. A two-tiered sample, selected from the UGC, includes 146 nearly face-on galaxies, with B<14.7 and disk scale-lengths between 10 and 20 arcsec, for which we have obtained H-alpha velocity-fields; and a representative 46-galaxy subset for which we have obtained stellar velocities and velocity dispersions. Based on re-calibration of extant photometric and spectroscopic data, we show these galaxies span factors of 100 in L(K) (0.03 < L/L(K)* < 3), 8 in L(B)/L(K), 10 in R-band disk central surface-brightness, with distances between 15 and 200 Mpc. The survey is augmented by 4-70 micron Spitzer IRAC and MIPS photometry, ground-based UBVRIJHK photometry, and HI aperture-synthesis imaging. We outline the spectroscopic analysis protocol for deriving precise and accurate line-of-sight stellar velocity dispersions. Our key measurement is the dynamical disk-mass surface-density. Star-formation rates and kinematic and photometric regularity of galaxy disks are also central products of the study. The survey is designed to yield random and systematic errors small enough (i) to confirm or disprove the maximum-disk hypothesis for intermediate-type disk galaxies, (ii) to provide an absolute calibration of the stellar mass-to-light ratio well below uncertainties in present-day stellar-population synthesis models, and (iii) to make significant progress in defining the shape of dark halos in the inner regions of disk galaxies.Comment: To appear in ApJ; 72 pages, 3 tables, 18 figures.     Study of the Microbial Diversity of a Newly Discovered East Antarctic Freshwater Lake, L27C, and of a Perennially Ice-Covered Lake Untersee

    The microbial communities that reside within freshwater lakes of Schirmacher and Untersee Oases in East Antarctica must cope with extreme conditions that may include cold temperature, annual freeze-thaw cycles, exposure to UV radiation, especially during the austral summer months, low light beneath thick ice-cover, followed by seasonal darkness. The objective of this study was to assess the microbial biodiversity and distribution from samples taken from two freshwater lakes (L27C and Lake Untersee) that were collected during the Tawani 2008 International Antarctic Expedition that conducted research in this region of Antarctica. L27C is a small, previously unreported lake residing 2 km WNW of Maitri Station at Schirmacher Oasis. Biodiversity and distribution of microorganisms within the lake were studied using both culture-independent and culture-dependent methodologies based upon the analysis of eubacterial 16S rRNA gene sequences. Lake Untersee, a perennially ice-covered, ultra-oligotrophic, lake in the Otto-von-Gruber-Gebirge (Gruber Mountains) of central Dronning Maud Land was also sampled and the microbial diversity was analyzed by eubacterial 16S rRNA gene sequences derived from pure cultures. Direct culturing of water samples from each lake on separate R2A growth medium exhibited a variety of microorganisms including: Janthinobacterium, Hymenobacter, Sphingamonas, Subtercola, Deinococcus, Arthrobacter, Flavobacterium, Polaromonas, Rhodoferax and Duganella. The evaluation of samples from L27C through culture-independent methodology identified a rich microbial diversity consisting of six different phyla of bacteria. The culture-independent analysis also displayed the majority of bacteria (56%) belonged to the Class gamma-proteobacteria within the phylum Proteobacteria. Within the Class gamma-proteobacteria, Acinetobacter dominated (48%) the total microbial load. Overall, L27C exhibited 7 different phyla of bacteria and 20 different genera. Statistical analysis (Shannon-Weaver Diversity Index and Simpson Diversity Index) of the biodiversity of L27C displayed a moderately rich and diverse community. Investigations of the biodiversity and distribution of microorganisms in these lakes will help further our understanding of how the physical environment impact the structure and function within these microbially dominated ecosystems

    HI Distribution and Tully-Fisher Distances of Gas-Poor Spiral Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster Region

    We present aperture synthesis observations in the 21 cm line of pointings centered on the Virgo Cluster region spirals NGC 4307, NGC 4356, NGC 4411B, and NGC 4492 using the Very Large Array (VLA) radiotelescope in its CS configuration. These galaxies were identified in a previous study of the three-dimensional distribution of HI emission in the Virgo region as objects with a substantial dearth of atomic gas and Tully-Fisher (TF) distance estimates that located them well outside the main body of the cluster. We have detected two other galaxies located in two of our fields and observed bands, the spiral NGC 4411A and the dwarf spiral VCC 740. We provide detailed information of the gas morphology and kinematics for all these galaxies. Our new data confirm the strong HI-deficiency of all the main targets but NGC 4411B, which is found to have a fairly normal neutral gas content. The VLA observations have also been used to discuss the applicability of TF techniques to the five largest spirals we have observed. We conclude that none of them is actually suitable for a TF distance evaluation, whether due to the radical trimming of their neutral hydrogen disks (NGC 4307, NGC 4356, and NGC 4492) or to their nearly face-on orientation (NGC 4411A and B).Comment: 32 pages, 5 figures.     Expatriation inkluderer Repatriation. Prosessen ved expatriates

    Ettersom organisasjoner opplever et økt behov for internasjonalisering har internasjonal HR blitt stadig viktigere. Da det er gjort lite forskning på dette emne i Norge, ønsket vi å ta opp kulturelle, sosiale og etiske problemer forbundet med internasjonal HR. Formålet med oppgaven er å forklare prosessen en expatriate går gjennom, samt utfordringer knyttet opp mot dette, både ved avreise og hjemreise. Vi har valgt å belyse følgende problemstilling i oppgaven: «Hvordan håndterer organisasjoner prosessen ved å forvalte globale ansatte, både ved avreise og hjemreise?» For å få en dypere innsikt i de ansattes og ledernes opplevelse av utstasjoneringen, har vi valgt å benytte kvalitativ metode for å besvare problemstillingen vår. Utvalget består av fem respondenter fra TechnipFMC og fem respondenter fra Statoil. Hovedfunnene i undersøkelsen viser at både Statoil og TechnipFMC har velfungerende prosesser ved forvaltning av sine expatriates. Gjennom funnene kan vi likevel se at organisasjonene ikke legger like stor vekt på alle fasene. Dette er interessante funn som avdekker forbedringspotensialer. Det er veldig viktig at organisasjoner forstår omfanget ved hver fase, samt elementene de inneholder. Det er et kjent problem at organisasjoner ofte glemmer prosessen ved repatriation, noe som også kommer frem i undersøkelsen vår. Det er en klar anbefaling at expatriation bør inkludere repatriation og at denne prosessen blir sett på som en helhet. Med andre ord, at begge prosessene går i hverandre og vektlegges likt, da hjemreise kan være vel så utfordrende som det å reise ut
