BACKGROUND: Short term illnesses, usually caused by respiratory or gastrointestinal diseases are disruptive to productivity and there is relatively little focus on preventative measures. This study examined the effect of the probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri protectis (ATCC55730) on its ability to improve work-place healthiness by reducing short term sick-leave caused by respiratory or gastrointestinal infections. METHODS: 262 employees at TetraPak in Sweden (day-workers and three-shift-workers) that were healthy at study start were randomised in a double-blind fashion to receive either a daily dose of 10(8 )Colony Forming Units of L. reuteri or placebo for 80 days. The study products were administered with a drinking straw. 181 subjects complied with the study protocol, 94 were randomised to receive L. reuteri and 87 received placebo. RESULTS: In the placebo group 26.4% reported sick-leave for the defined causes during the study as compared with 10.6% in the L. reuteri group (p < 0.01). The frequency of sick-days was 0.9% in the placebo group and 0.4% in the L. reuteri group (p < 0.01). Among the 53 shift-workers, 33% in the placebo group reported sick during the study period as compared with none in the L. reuteri group(p < 0.005)

Genomic and strontium isotope variation reveal immigration patterns in a Viking Age town

The impact of human mobility on the northern European urban populations during the Viking and Early Middle Ages and its repercussions in Scandinavia itself are still largely unexplored. Our study of the demographics in the final phase of the Viking era is the first comprehensive multidisciplinary investigation that includes genetics, isotopes, archaeology, and osteology on a larger scale. This early Christian dataset is particularly important as the earlier common pagan burial tradition during the Iron Age was cremation, hindering large-scale DNA analyses. We present genome-wide sequence data from 23 individuals from the 10th to 12th century Swedish town of Sigtuna. The data revealed high genetic diversity among the early urban residents. The observed variation exceeds the genetic diversity in distinct modern-day and Iron Age groups of central and northern Europe. Strontium isotope data suggest mixed local and non-local origin of the townspeople. Our results uncover the social system underlying the urbanization process of the Viking World of which mobility was an intricate part and was comparable between males and females. The inhabitants of Sigtuna were heterogeneous in their genetic affinities, probably reflecting both close and distant connections through an established network, confirming that early urbanization processes in northern Europe were driven by migration

En dannelsesreise i animasjonens landskap – Didaktikk og etikk i Disneys Pinocchio

    No full text

This article presents Disney’s Pinocchio as a journey into maturity, where development of virtue is put on the agenda. The intention is to show how the film can illustrate ethical and Christian values, and relate these values to children’s self-development. Thus, it may contribute to realizing the idea of self-formation emphasized in documents of reference for schools and kindergartens in Norway. The authors use main features of the film to demonstrate that it dramatizes a development from classic virtue ethics towards a more Christian ethics. The analysis is informed by                                              virtue ethics, both as it was developed in antiquity, and as it was Christianized by philosophers such as Søren Kierkegaard. In the authors’ reading, Disney’s Pinocchio demonstrates that self-development in this respect requires an ability to recognize evil and choose the good. The article also points to how the artistic use of animation techniques contribute to illustrating the thematic structure, connecting to forms of storytelling that children are already familiar with. Artikkelen fremstiller Disneys Pinocchio som en dannelsesreise der utvikling av dyder står på dagsorden. Advances of dual source, dual-energy imaging in postmortem CT

    No full text
This paper focuses on the use of multi-detector row dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) in the evaluation of postmortal examinations. The use of dual energy moves postmortem CT to an entirely new dimension of diagnostic sensitivity where contrast in the image is not merely limited to X-ray attenuation differences, but may include elements of functional and tissue characterization. This additional information may be used to improve the benefit postmortem imaging can provide to supplement and simplify the conventional autopsy

Premature mortality in patients with Addison's disease: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: The survival rate of patients with primary adrenal insufficiency (Addison's disease) undergoing currently accepted replacement therapy is not known, although well-informed patients are considered to have a normal survival rate. In this study, we evaluated the mortality of patients with Addison's disease in Sweden. METHODS: A population-based, retrospective, observational study was performed, using the National Swedish Hospital and Cause of Death Registers, covering the period from 1987-2001. After a diagnosis of Addison's disease, each patient was followed until the end of follow-up or death. Mortality was compared with that of the Swedish background population. FINDINGS: We identified 1675 patients (995 women and 680 men) diagnosed with primary adrenal insufficiency. The average follow-up from initial diagnosis was 6.5 yr. Five hundred seven patients died during the study period compared with an expected 199. The risk ratio for all-cause mortality was 2.19 (confidence interval 1.91-2.51) for men and 2.86 (confidence interval 2.54-3.20) for women. The excess mortality in both men and women was attributed to cardiovascular, malignant, and infectious diseases. Concomitant diabetes mellitus was observed in 12% of the patients, but only contributed to the increased mortality to a minor extent. INTERPRETATION: Compared with the background population, we observed that the risk ratio for death was more than 2-fold higher in patients with Addison's disease. Cardiovascular, malignant, and infectious diseases were responsible for the higher mortality rate
