    An Adaptive Algorithm to Optimize the Dynamics of IEEE 802.15.4 Networks

    Presentado en ICST 2013IEEE 802.15.4 standard is becoming one of the most popular technologies for the deployment of low rate Wireless Personal Area Networks with strong power constraints. In order to reduce the energy consumption, beacon-enabled networks with long network inactive periods can be employed. However, the duration of these inactivity periods, as some other configuration parameters, are conventionally set to default values and remain fixed during the whole network operation. This implies that if they are misconfigured the network will not adapt to changes in the conditions of the environment, particularly to the most determining one, i.e. the traffic load. This paper proposes a simple procedure for the dynamic adaptation of several key parameters of IEEE 802.15.4 networks. Under this procedure, the 802.15.4 parameters are modified as a function of the existing traffic conditions.Spanish National Project No.TEC2009-13763-C02-01

    Evaluation of Feasibility and Impact of Attacks against the 6top Protocol in 6TiSCH Networks

    The 6TiSCH architecture has been gaining attraction as a promising solution to ensure reliability and security for communication in applications for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). While many different aspects of the architecture have been investigated in literature, an in-depth analysis of the security features included in its design is still missing. In this paper, we assess the security vulnerabilities of the 6top protocol, a core component of the 6TiSCH architecture for enabling network nodes to negotiate communication resources. Our analysis highlights two possible attacks against the 6top protocol that can impair network performance and reliability in a significant manner. To prove the feasibility of the attacks in practice, we implemented both of them on the Contiki-NG Operating System and tested their effectiveness on a simple deployment with three Zolertia RE-Mote sensor nodes. Also, we carried out a set of simulations using Cooja in order to assess their impact on larger networks. Our results show that both attacks reduce reliability in the overall network and increase energy consumption of the network nodes

    Enamel fluorosis in rat’s incisor: S.E.M. and T.E.M. investigation

    Findings on the alterations taking place in the enamel have demonstrated that they are generally caused by a daily use of highly fluoritic drinking waters.According to that, the Authors have carried out an ultrastructural study on lower incisors of albino rats after administering for 60 days water with a fluorine concentration five times the normal one.The samples, studied under the S.E.M., showed a general slowing of both the deposition and the maturation phase as well as the presence of some hypomineralized areas even after eruption.All this suggested the possibility that the damages observed were not due to the direct effect of fluorine on the enamel, but to the interaction between fluorine and ameloblasts.The Authors have then carried out an ultrastructural study on the enamel organ using the S.E.M.The results showed the presence of a well-evident endoplasmic reticulum, the lack in dense granules during the secretion phase, the lack in ruffle ended webs during the modulation phase, and the mitochondrial damage in the ameloblast.All this could justify the slowing of the enamel mineralization caused by fluorine effect on the ameloblasts.Il a été démontré que des altérations de l’émail sont généralement dues à l’absorption quotidienne d’eaux de boissons riches en fluor.Les auteurs ont entrepris une étude ultrastructurale des incisives inférieures du rat ayant reçu pendant 60 jours de l’eau dont la concentration en fluor est 5 fois supérieure à la normale.Les échantillons étudiés en microscopie électronique à balayage ont montré un ralentissement global de la déposition et de la phase de maturation ainsi que la présence de territoires hypominéralisés même après l’éruption.Toutes ces constatations suggèrent la possibilité que les dommages observés ne sont pas dus à l’effet direct du fluor sur l’émail, mais aux interactions entre le fluor et les améloblastes.Les auteurs ont mené une étude ultrastructurale de l’émail en utilisant le microscope électronique à balayage.Les résultats ont montré la présence d’un réticulum endoplasmique bien apparent, l’absence de grains denses au cours de la phase secrétoire, l’absence d’extrémités membranaires rugueuses au cours de la phase de modulation, et des altérations des mitochondries dans les améloblastes.Toutes ces constatations pourraient expliquer le ralentissement de la minéralisation de l’émail causé par les effets du fluor sur les améloblastes

    JA-trie: Entropy-based packet classification

    Any improvement in packet classification performance is crucial to ensure Internet functions continue to track the ever-increasing link capacities. Packet classification is the foundation of many Internet functions: from fundamental packet-forwarding to advanced features such as Quality of Service en-forcement, monitoring and security functions. This work proposes a novel trie-based classification algorithm, named Jump-Ahead Trie (JA-trie), utilizing an entropy-based pre-processing phase and a novel approach to wildcard matching.     Labeling of Activity Recognition Datasets: Detection of Misbehaving Users

    Automatic recognition of user’s activities by means of wearable devices is a key element of many e-health applications, ranging from rehabilitation to monitoring of elderly citizens. Activity recognition methods generally rely on the availability of annotated training sets, where the traces collected using sensors are labelled with the real activity carried out by the user. We propose a method useful to automatically identify misbehaving users, i.e. the users that introduce inaccuracies during the labeling phase. The method is semi-supervised and detects misbehaving users as anomalies with respect to accurate ones. Experimental results show that misbehaving users can be detected with more than 99% accuracy

    Effects of sub-optimal temperatures on seed germination of three warm-season turfgrasses with perspectives of cultivation in transition zone

    Warm-season turfgrass species prevail in tropical and subtropical areas, but can also be grown in the transition zone. In this case, cold tolerance is a key aspect for germination and successful turfgrass establishment. The germination response to sub-optimal temperatures was investigated for Cynodon dactylon (cvs Jackpot, La Paloma, Transcontinental, Yukon, Riviera), Buchloe dactyloides (cv SWI 2000) and Paspalum vaginatum (cv Pure Dynasty). Four temperature regimes were applied, i.e., 20/30 °C, 15/25 °C, 10/20 °C and 5/15 °C, with a 12:12 h (light:dark) photoperiod. Germination assays were performed twice, with six replicates (Petri dishes) per treatment in each experiment, fifty seeds per dish. The final germinated percentages at last inspection time (FGP) were obtained for each Petri dish and processed by using a generalized linear mixed model (binomial error and logit link). Germination curves were fitted to each Petri dish by using time-to-event methods and germination rates (GR) for the 10th, 20th and 30th percentiles were derived and used to fit a linear thermal-time model. For all cultivars, FGP decreased with decreasing mean daily temperatures. Base temperatures (Tb) ranged between 11.4 °C and 17.0 °C, while the thermal time to obtain 30% germination ranged from 51.3 °C day for SWI 2000 to 144.0 °C day for Pure Dynasty. The estimated parameters were used to predict germination time in the field, considering the observed soil temperatures in Legnaro. The estimated date for the beginning of germination in the field would range from early April for SWI 2000 and Transcontinental to mid-May for Riviera. These results might be used as a practical support for planning spring sowing, which is crucial for successful turfgrass establishment, especially without irrigation

    Variation in seed mineral elements profile and yield in field bean (Vicia faba L. var. minor) genotypes

    Field bean (Vicia faba L. var. minor) is one of the major leguminous crops cultivated in the world and mainly destined for animal feed. Although its seed is generally recognised as a good protein source, little is known about its mineral elements profile, which is an important aspect for a balanced animal diet. Therefore, the aim of the present work was to assess the seed mineral elements composition, along with some key production parameters, in eight field bean genotypes grown in a Mediterranean environment, without intensive management, over two years (2009/10 and 2010/11). Independently of the year, the seed of Chiaro di Torre Lama was the richest in phosphorus (P), magnesium, calcium and iron contents, while that of Sint 6 and Motta Chiaro 69 were the most effective accumulators of potassium and zinc, respectively. While all the genotypes yielded better in the second year (with more rainfall), the seasonal effect on seed mineral elements composition depended on the genotype. Indeed, the P content was 46% lower in Chiaro di Torre Lama, Motta Chiaro 69 and Sint 6 in the second year, while there was only a negligible seasonal effect for Sint 8 with respect to Fe content. Overall, this crop is reasonably productive under a low management regime and its seed can supply significant amounts of certain minerals (particularly P) in feed formulations. Both aspects are important in a perspective of optimising field bean production in the Mediterranean area and, hence, improving farmers' income

    Real causes of apparent abnormal results in heavy ion reactions

    We study the effect of the static characteristics of nuclei and dynamics of the nucleus-nucleus interac- tion in the capture stage of reaction, in the competition between quasifission and complete fusion processes, as well as the angular momentum dependence of the competition between fission and evaporation processes along the de-excitation cascade of the compound nucleus. The results calculated for the mass-asymmetric and less mass-asymmetric reactions in the entrance channel are analyzed in order to investigate the role of the dynamical effects on the yields of the evaporation residue nuclei. We also discuss about uncertainties at the extraction of such relevant physical quantities as Γn/Γtot ratio or also excitation functions from the experimental results due to the not always realistic assumptions in the treatment and analysis of the detected events. This procedure can lead to large ambiguity when the complete fusion process is strongly hindered or when the fast fission contri- bution is large. We emphasize that a refined multiparameter model of the reaction dynamics as well as a more detailed and checked data analysis are strongly needed in heavy-ion collisions
