    A new morphometric method for the sella turcica and the hypophyseal fossa and its clinical relevance

    The sella turcica and the hypophyseal fossa should be considered different entities, the latter being part of the former. Their morphology and dimensions correlate to some extent with those of the contained pituitary gland and have, for this reason, attracted the interest of anatomists and radiologists. With the application of MRI, however, these data are of limited use in the diagnosis of pituitary disorders, although they remain valuable with regard to a microsurgical approach to the hypophysis. The proposed morphometric method was applied to 20 dry skulls. We first made casts of the corresponding sellae. Their volumes were then measured by immersion. The frontal section of each hypophyseal fossa was obtained through its deepest point and magnified. The Cartesian co-ordinates of the contour of the section were used to evaluate the corresponding area and centroid. The volume of each fossa was finally obtained by the use of Pappus’ theorem applied to solids of rotation. The volumes of the sellae obtained as above ranged from 460 mm3 to 1570 mm3 with a mean value of 835 mm3. These figures are comparable to those reported from previous authors. To our knowledge the method described has enabled a close approximation of the volumes of the hypophyseal fossae to be made for the first time. These volumes ranged from 24 mm3 to 300 mm3, with a mean value of 157 mm3. Similar numerical methods might be applicable in vivo by the use of MR imaging

    Οι κατολισθήσεις αποτελούν τον πιο συχνό κίνδυνο στην Δυτική Ελλάδα, μαζί με τους σεισμούς και τις πυρκαγιές. Έχουν πραγματοποιηθεί πολλές μελέτες με σκοπό την μελέτη των φαινομένων καθώς επίσης και καταγραφή τους σε χάρτες. Στην παρούσα εργασία αναλύονται δύο από τις πλέον καλά μελετημένες κατολισθήσεις ως προς την εξέλιξή τους. Οι κατολισθήσεις της Παναγοπούλας και της Καρυάς αποτελούν δύο αντιπροσωπευτικές θέσεις μακράς παρακολούθησης μέσω αποκλισιομετρικών μετρήσεων. Ο παράγοντας εναύσματος και στις δύο περιπτώσεις είναι οι έντονες βροχοπτώσεις. Η κύρια τεχνικογεωλογική ενότητα που σχετίζεται με αυτές είναι ο σχηματισμός του φλύσχη. Οι αποκλισιομετρικές μετρήσεις για ένα μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα αναλύονται και σχεδιάζονται τυπικά διαγράμματα μετακινήσεων. Γίνεται χρήση ενός απλού στατιστικού μοντέλου που περιλαμβάνει κανονικοποίηση των δεδομένων κατά τη διάρκεια συγκεκριμένων φάσεων μετακίνησης με βασικό σκοπό να αναγνωριστούν τα κινηματικά χαρακτηριστικά της μετακίνησης και να εκτιμηθούν οι επικρατούσες ταχύτητες.Two of the most well known historical landslide occurrences are analyzed and their temporal evolution is presented. The sites of Panagopoula and Karya are often referred as the most representative cases of long term ground displacements based on inclinometer monitoring data. Regarding these cases, the heavy rainfalls constitute the main controlling (triggering) factor, while flysch is the critical landslide-prone formation which significantly contributes to landsliding. The inclinometer data through a long time period were analyzed and typical movement diagrams were compiled. A simple statistical model including data normalization through several active stages (phases) of movement is used to identify the common kinematic features as well as to estimate the velocity trend type of movement

    The development of the spiral ganglion in the human foetus

    The development of the spiral ganglion was studied in steps sections of 81 human temporal bones. By the 8th week, the spiral ganglion has already separated from the vestibular ganglion. At 13 weeks two distinct populations are observed that correspond to neuron and Schwann cells. At 15 weeks the spiral ganglion has increased its distance from the cochlear duct and is surrounded by mesenchyme near the scala tympani. At 14 weeks a gradual decrease in the nucleus-to-cell area ratio was observed in spiral ganglion neurons that may reflect a morphological adaptation to function. By the 23rd week the modiolus begins to ossify and the spiral ganglion is surrounded by bony trabeculae. The time course of spiral ganglion development follows that of the stria vascularis and organ of Corti, although maturation changes are still observed in the neuronal population even beyond 20 weeks

    Characterization of a prenatally assessed de novo supernumerary minute ring chromosome 20 in a phenotypically normal male

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The heterogeneous group of small supernumerary marker chromosomes (sSMCs) presents serious counseling problems, especially if they are present de novo and diagnosed prenatally. The incidence has been estimated at 1 in 1000 prenatal samples. We present a case of mosaic sSMC diagnosed prenatally after amniocentesis. The sSMC was characterized by various molecular cytogenetic techniques and determined to be a r(20) chromosome. After genetic counseling, the parents decided to continue the pregnancy, and a boy with minor phenotypic variants was born after 39 weeks of pregnancy. The case is compared with four other cases of prenatally detected r(20) mosaicism.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Here we describe a 3 months old male child with normal pre- and postnatal development and with a de novo ring supernumerary marker chromosome in amniocytes cultures. Using new fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) techniques, three distinguishable sSMCs (cryptic mosaicism), all derived from chromosome 20, were observed, including ring and minute chromosomes. This heterogeneity was impossible to detect by the conventional G-banding technique or conventional FISH technique that were used before the application of new FISH techniques (subcentromere-specific multicolor-FISH [subcenM-FISH]) and a probe, specific for the 20p12.2 band. The sSMC present in 25% of the cells was present as r(20)(::p12.2~12.3->q11.1::)<abbrgrp><abbr bid="B5">5</abbr></abbrgrp>/r(20;20)(::p12.1->q11.1::q11.1 >p12.1::)<abbrgrp><abbr bid="B2">2</abbr></abbrgrp>/min(20;20)(:p12.1->q11.1::q11.1->p12.1:)<abbrgrp><abbr bid="B1">1</abbr></abbrgrp>. The final karyotype was 47,XY,+r(20)[25%]/46,XY[75%].</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We emphasize the importance of application of molecular cytogenetics in a prenatally diagnostic laboratory and description of more cases to enable a better genetic counseling and risk evaluation.</p

    Fasting Serum Triglyceride and High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Levels in Patients Intended to be Treated for Dyslipidemia

Patients were stratified according to their plasma lipid levels. They were divided into various groups on the basis of serum TG (&ge; 150 or &lt; 150 mg/dL) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (&ge; 40 or &lt; 40 mg/dL).Results: Patients with TG &ge; 150 mg/dL had a higher total cholesterol and lower HDL-C levels compared with those with TG &lt; 150 mg/dL, (p &lt; 0.001). Patients with HDL-C &lt; 40 mg/dL had a lower serum total cholesterol and higher TG compared with those with HDL-C &ge; 40 mg/dL (p = 0.011 and p &lt; 0.0001, respectively). In all patients as well as in the subgroups, an inverse correlation between TG and HDL-C was found (r = &ndash;0.377, p &lt; 0.001).Conclusions: Although, the metabolic pathway for TG and HDL-C is closely linked, an inverse correlation between TG and HDL-C levels seems to exist in the entire sampled population.     Postprandial lipemia in men with metabolic syndrome, hypertensives and healthy subjects

    BACKGROUND: The metabolic syndrome (MetS), as well as postprandial hypertriglyceridemia, is associated with coronary heart disease. This study aimed to evaluate the postprandial lipemia after oral fat tolerance test (OFTT) in subjects with MetS and compare them to hypertensive (HTN) and healthy subjects. RESULTS: OFTT was given to 33 men with MetS (defined by the Adult Treatment Panel III), 17 HTN and 14 healthy men. The MetS group was further divided according to fasting triglycerides (TG) into TG ≥ 150 [MetS+TG, (n = 22)] or <150 mg/dl [MetS-TG (n = 11)], and into those with or without hypertension [MetS+HTN (n = 24), MetS-HTN (n = 9), respectively]. TG concentrations were measured before and at 4, 6 and 8 h after OFTT and the postprandial response was quantified using the area under the curve (AUC) for TG. The postprandial response was significantly higher in MetS compared to HTN and healthy men [AUC (SD) in mg/dl/h; 2534 ± 1016 vs. 1620 ± 494 and 1019 ± 280, respectively, p ≤ 0.001]. The TG levels were increased significantly in MetS+TG compared to MetS-TG subjects at 4 (p = 0.022), 6 (p < 0.001) and 8 hours (p < 0.001). The TG were increased significantly in MetS-TG compared to healthy subjects at 4 (p = 0.011), 6 (p = 0.001) and 8 hours (p = 0.015). In linear regression analysis only fasting TG levels were a significant predictor of the AUC (Coefficient B = 8.462, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Fasting TG concentration is the main determinant of postprandial lipemia. However, an exaggeration of TG postprandialy was found in normotriglyceridemic MetS and HTN compared to healthy subjects. This suggests that intervention to lower fasting TG levels should be recommended in MetS subjects

    Application of a stochastic weather generator to assess climate change impacts in a semi-arid climate: The Upper Indus Basin

    Assessing local climate change impacts requires downscaling from Global Climate Model simulations. Here, a stochastic rainfall model (RainSim) combined with a rainfall conditioned weather generator (CRU WG) have been successfully applied in a semi-arid mountain climate, for part of the Upper Indus Basin (UIB), for point stations at a daily time-step to explore climate change impacts. Validation of the simulated time-series against observations (1961–1990) demonstrated the models’ skill in reproducing climatological means of core variables with monthly RMSE of <2.0 mm for precipitation and ⩽0.4 °C for mean temperature and daily temperature range. This level of performance is impressive given complexity of climate processes operating in this mountainous context at the boundary between monsoonal and mid-latitude (westerly) weather systems. Of equal importance the model captures well the observed interannual variability as quantified by the first and last decile of 30-year climatic periods. Differences between a control (1961–1990) and future (2071–2100) regional climate model (RCM) time-slice experiment were then used to provide change factors which could be applied within the rainfall and weather models to produce perturbed ‘future’ weather time-series. These project year-round increases in precipitation (maximum seasonal mean change:+27%, annual mean change: +18%) with increased intensity in the wettest months (February, March, April) and year-round increases in mean temperature (annual mean +4.8 °C). Climatic constraints on the productivity of natural resource-dependent systems were also assessed using relevant indices from the European Climate Assessment (ECA) and indicate potential future risk to water resources and local agriculture. However, the uniformity of projected temperature increases is in stark contrast to recent seasonally asymmetrical trends in observations, so an alternative scenario of extrapolated trends was also explored. We conclude that interannual variability in climate will continue to have the dominant impact on water resources management whichever trajectory is followed. This demonstrates the need for sophisticated downscaling methods which can evaluate changes in variability and sequencing of events to explore climate change impacts in this region
