The research reported in the present article aims to evaluate the teacher education learning scenarios implemented in two curricular units of the basic education course, discussing, in particular, the role of the integrated curriculum approach and of the used technologies, in the development of statistical thinking of prospective teachers. The study used a methodology within the interpretative paradigm. In order to evaluate the learning scenarios, it was used participant observation, documents' collection and a questionnaire with open-ended items whose responses were subjected to content analysis, and the frequencies of the emergent categories were determined. The results support the validation of the implemented scenarios. The students developed the reasoning about data representation and associations. Forest ecosystems assure functions and supply services that are fundamental for human well-being. The sustainable management of forest systems based on a multifunctional approach is an important way of contributing locally and globally to the supply of wood for industry but also of non-woody products to (e.g. wild mushrooms, berries), to the conservation of natural resources (e.g. soil, water, biodiversity) and cultural heritage (e.g. scenery, traditions), and to the regulation of ecological processes (e.g. carbon sequestration, erosion). The preferences of society, however, may favour demand and supply of particular forest goods or services causing the decline of other (trade-off) or may favour demand and supply of several services simultaneously (synergy). In this work we evaluated the interactions between demand and the supply of two provisioning ecosystem services – production of wood for energy and wild mushrooms - in maritime pine stands in north-eastern Portugal. Biomass for energy and mushrooms production are services currently increasing in importance due to the expansion of local and international markets. The assessment was done using AppTitude® to address spatially and economically demand and supply of these services in a heuristic model under different scenarios. AppTitude® combined three kind of models in his assessments: i) value or spatial suitability models, ii) price models and iii) quantity models. The results show possible conflicts and synergies between these two ecosystem services as well as the spatial distribution of supply variability due to forest management followed in maritime pine stands.

    Get PDF

Urinary tract infections on the Portuguese general practitioner sentinel network - preliminary data 2016

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are inflammatory processes of infectious cause, which can reach the upper and/or lower urinary tract. UTIs, after respiratory infections, are the most frequent in the community, with a higher incidence in females. They can be classified according to anatomical location: in cystitis (low UTI) where the presence of bacteria is limited to the bladder; and pyelonephritis (high UTI) defined as that affecting the pelvis and renal parenchyma. Escherichia coli is responsible for 75 to 90% of the cases. The high rates of resistance of E. coli to quinolones and co-trimoxazol described in Portugal are likely to be a consequence of the prescription abuse of these antibiotics over the last few decades and may increase the risk of antibiotic failure. When the antibiotic prescribing decision is based on the knowledge of the main microbial agents involved and its sensitivity profile is known, allowing guidelines to be adjusted to the current reality, empirical antibiotic therapy is associated with eradication rates equal to or greater than 90%.N/

Pedelec on a hilly city: a case study in Coimbra

Conclusions: The pedelec emerges from this research as a viable active transport alternative for hilly cities. With adequate autonomy and power to overcome relief, one of the greatest deterrents for using the bicycle as main transport mode, it gives the ball back to politicians, who are responsible for providing cyclists with safe and comfortable pathways for exercising their choice for this mode. Investment on bike paths, bike lanes and adjustment of crossings is the natural next step to foster a more active and sustainable transport mode, from which all citizens would benefit. The pedelec is a basic type of electrically-assisted bicycle, designed to help cyclists overcome most slopes. This article presents a theoretical case study of a pedelec on the city of Coimbra, Portugal, which shows that even a low-end model provides enough power and autonomy for the daily transportation needs of a regular cyclist. It is only if battery wear is considered that a model of higher battery capacity is recommended, and even then only if the cyclist uses the pedelec very intensively. By overcoming what is arguably one of the greatest deterrents to cycling, the pedelec contributes towards materializing the concept of sustainable mobility. Overcoming the other major deterrent, safety concerns, is thus passed to the political decision makers, which will need to build and improve the urban infrastructures necessary for citizens to safely exercise their choice for this transport mode.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A multi-criteria decision aid methodology to design electric vehicles public charging networks

    Get PDF
This article presents a new multi-criteria decision aid methodology, dynamic-PROMETHEE, here used to design electric vehicle charging networks. In applying this methodology to a Portuguese city, results suggest that it is effective in designing electric vehicle charging networks, generating time and policy based scenarios, considering offer and demand and the city’s urban structure. Dynamic-PROMETHE adds to the already known PROMETHEE’s characteristics other useful features, such as decision memory over time, versatility and adaptability. The case study, used here to present the dynamic-PROMETHEE, served as inspiration and base to create this new methodology. It can be used to model different problems and scenarios that may present similar requirement characteristics
