Hotel customer segmentation and sentiment analysis through online reviews: An analysis of selected European markets [Segmentação de clientes hoteleiros e análise de sentimento através de avaliações online: uma análise de mercados europeus selecionados]. Tourism & Management Studies, 18(1), 29-40. https://doi.org/10.18089/tms.2022.180----------------------------------------------This paper is financed by National Funds provided by FCTFoundation for Science and Technology through project UIDB/04470/2020This study aims to verify how distinct markets evaluate hotels in the Algarve through the analysis of online reviews, in order to identify if satisfaction and dissatisfaction attributes are similar among some of the main markets of overnight stay tourists in the region. Online reviews of hotels in the Algarve, written in English, French as well as Portuguese and posted on Tripadvisor by British, French and Portuguese residents from January 2019 to December 2019 are analysed. After the analysis of 8,596 online textual reviews, the results demonstrated that not only satisfaction and dissatisfaction rates towards hotel attributes differ according to the language, but also that customers from different countries place dissimilar emphasis on hotel attributes. Besides extending the current research on the use of online reviews, the findings of this study also assist hoteliers to identify improvement opportunities. Although many studies on marketing segmentation through data mining have been conducted, this paper analyses the customer satisfaction of relevant tourist markets and suggests up-to-date practical implications for hoteliers.

Ecosystem Services Provided by the Little Things That Run the World

Highest extinction risk and consequently biodiversity loss are predicted to occur in invertebrates, specifically insects, and these declines are expected to cascade onto ecosystem functioning and human well-being. Although this knowledge is intrinsically present in more traditional communities, in more urban environments, mapping ecosystem services can be an important tool to raise people’s awareness on the importance of preserving insect diversity. After an extensive revision of the available literature, we used a rule-based approach to assess the provisioning, regulating and maintenance, and cultural services delivered by insects. We followed the Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services (CICES) and identified several potential indicators that may help underpin the mapping and valuation of the services delivered by insects. From our search, we extracted a total of 73 indicators, divided as 17 Provisional indicators, 27 Regulation and Maintenance indicators, and 29 Cultural indicators. We concluded that insects are providers of services in the three major ‘Sections’ of ecosystem services defined by CICES. Despite the lack of recognition of provisioning and cultural services, the indicators provided may help to raise awareness on the importance of the little things the run the world, in order to preserve traditional and technological uses of insects and their services

Magnetic-responsive hydrogels for cartilage tissue engineering

Publicado em "Journal of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine", vol. 7, supp. 1 (2013)The use of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) has been explored as an alternative approach to overcome current limitations of regenerative medicine strategies. Cell engineering approaches where MNPs are incorporated within three-dimensional constructs, such as scaffolds or hydrogels may constitute a novel and attractive approach towards the development of a magnetically-responsive system. These systems would enable remote controlled actions over tissue engineered constructs in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, growing evidence suggests that the application of a magnetic field may enhance biological performance over commonly used static culture conditions providing stimulation for cell proliferation, migration and differentiation. In this work we analyze the role of magnetic stimulation on the behavior of human adipose derived stem cells (hASCs) laden in k-carrageenan hydrogels aiming at cartilage tissue engineering approaches. Thermo-responsive natural-based κ-carrageenan hydrogels were used as 3D templates since previous studies(1) report the adequate environment provided by these materials to support the viability and chondrogenic differentiation of several types of cells

Dietary sugars analysis: quantification of fructooligossacharides during fermentation by HPLC-RI method

In this work, a simple chromatographic method is proposed and in-house validated for the quantification of total and individual fructooligossacharides (e.g., 1-kestose, nystose, and 1F-fructofuranosylnystose). It was shown that a high-performance liquid chromatography with refractive index detector could be used to monitor the dynamic of fructooligossacharides production via sucrose fermentation using Aspergillus aculeatus. This analytical technique may be easily implemented at laboratorial or industrial scale for fructooligossacharides mass-production monitoring allowing also controlling the main substrate (sucrose) and the secondary by-products (glucose and fructose). The proposed chromatographic method had a satisfactory intra- and inter-day variability (in general, with a relative standard deviation lower than 5%), high sensitivity for each sugar (usually, with a relative error lower than 5%), and low detection (lower than 0.06 ± 0.04 g/L) and quantification (lower than 0.2 ± 0.1 g/L) limits. The correct quantification of fructooligossacharides in fermentative media may allow a more precise nutritional formulation of new functional foods, since it is reported that different fructooligossacharides exhibit different biological activities and effects. This work was partially co-financed by FCT and FEDER under Program COMPETE (Project PEst-C/EQB/LA0020/2013), by the Strategic Project PEst-OE/EQB/LA0023/2013 and by the project ref. This work was financially supported by Fundacao para a Ciencia e Tecnologia (FCT-MCTES) through project PTDC/BIA-PRO/118377/2010, grants SFRH/BD/85806/2012 (ARC), SFRH/BPD/64917/2009 (MC), DAAD-441.00 and Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft Grant Le1171/6-1 (to SL). The access to the EMBL facilities was supported by the EU FP7 infrastructure grants P-Cube (Project Number 227764) and BioStruct-X (Project Number 283570).The periplasmic aldehyde oxidoreductase PaoABC from Escherichia coli is a molybdenum enzyme involved in detoxification of aldehydes in the cell. It is an example of an αβγ heterotrimeric enzyme of the xanthine oxidase family of enzymes which does not dimerize via its molybdenum cofactor binding domain. In order to structurally characterize PaoABC, X-ray crystallography and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) have been carried out. The protein crystallizes in the presence of 20% (w/v) polyethylene glycol 3350 using the hanging-drop vapour diffusion method. Although crystals were initially twinned, several experiments were done to overcome twinning and lowering the crystallization temperature (293 K to 277 K) was the solution to the problem. The non-twinned crystals used to solve the structure diffract X-rays to beyond 1.80 Å and belong to the C2 space group, with cell parameters a = 109.42 Å, b = 78.08 Å, c = 151.77 Å, β = 99.77°, and one molecule in the asymmetric unit. A molecular replacement solution was found for each subunit separately, using several proteins as search models. SAXS data of PaoABC were also collected showing that, in solution, the protein is also an αβγ heterotrimer.publishersversionpublishe
