Virtual restitution of the parietal decoration in the Sala del Mosaico de los Amores, Cástulo Archaelogical site (Linares, Spain)
The use of photogrammetry in the field of archaeology is increasingly widespread. In the case of restoration, the use of 3D contributes to facilitating the complex process of an intervention and bringing the artwork closer to the general public. This paper describes the application of 3D modelling techniques in the specific case of the Roman wall paintings from the Sala del Mosaico de los Amores, in Castulo Archaeological Site (Linares, province of Jaén). These paintings were found in 2011, collapsed over the mosaic pavement, and they were moved to the University of Granada for their restoration. After the intervention, the photogrammetric surveys of the different fragments and of the room to which they belong were developed, and the virtual restitution was generated, therefore making it possible for the general public to reliably appreciate how the room would look like with the parietal decoration located in-situ.Ministry of Economy and CompetitivenessEuropean Regional Development Fund (MINECO/FEDER, UE)

Small Molecule Drug Discovery at the Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor
The therapeutic success of peptide glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus has inspired discovery efforts aimed at developing orally available small molecule GLP-1 receptor agonists. Although the GLP-1 receptor is a member of the structurally complex class B1 family of GPCRs, in recent years, a diverse array of orthosteric and allosteric nonpeptide ligands has been reported. These compounds include antagonists, agonists, and positive allosteric modulators with intrinsic efficacy. In this paper, a comprehensive review of currently disclosed small molecule GLP-1 receptor ligands is presented. In addition, examples of “ligand bias” and “probe dependency” for the GLP-1 receptor are discussed; these emerging concepts may influence further optimization of known molecules or persuade designs of expanded screening strategies to identify novel chemical starting points for GLP-1 receptor drug discovery
Diagnosis of the infection of sunflower by Orobanche cumana using multicolour fluorescence imaging
Orobanche cumana is an holoparasite and thus totally dependent on sunflower for fixed carbon. Initial stages of the infection occur in the first weeks after sowing and are critical for the establishment of a continuum between the host and the parasite vascular system. From that moment the parasite obtains its supply of water, mineral nutrients, and assimilates from the host plant. Alterations of plant metabolism can be detected using remote sensing techniques for detection of fluorescence emitted by plants. One of these indirect techniques is multicolour fluorescence imaging. In this work, we assessed the early infection of sunflower by O. cumana using multicolour fluorescence imaging and we inferred physiological processes affected in sunflower plants infected by the parasite. Ten germinated seeds of the inbred line NR5 were inoculated with population LP2013 of O. cumana. The same number of not inoculated seeds was used as control. Sunflower was planted in pots with soil mixture and grown in greenhouse at 12–22°C for 6 weeks. Multicolour fluorescence imaging was conducted 3, 4, and 5 weeks after inoculation. The two first pairs of fully expanded leaves of each sunflower plant were imaged, and, for each measure date, five fluorescence variables in inoculated plants were compared to those in the control. Three weeks after inoculation, when symptoms of infection were still not observed, decreased levels of blue and green fluorescence and increased far-red fluorescence were observed in leaves of the inoculated plants. At 4 and 5 weeks after inoculation, when inoculated plants displayed symptoms of infection by O. cumana, differences in fluorescence between inoculated plants and the controls were the same and statistically supported. These results are consistent with an increase in total chlorophyll content of sunflower plants infected by O. cumana, and a decrease in the accumulation of secondary metabolites, both related to the need of higher photosynthetic activity to supply the parasite with photosynthate. Biochemical mechanisms underlying alterations in photosynthesis must be further investigated. The results obtained showed that multicolour fluorescence imaging can be used to detect fluorescence differences in inoculated sunflower as early as 3 weeks after inoculation. Insect repellents: recommendations for use in children
OBJETIVO: Apresentar uma revisão bibliográfica sobre o uso de repelentes de insetos em crianças, com ênfase especial na proteção contra mosquitos. FONTES DE DADOS: Realizou-se uma pesquisa bibliográfica nas bases de dados Pubmed e Lilacs, cujos artigos incluíam produtos comercialmente disponíveis no Brasil. Foram selecionados artigos publicados nos últimos dez anos em língua inglesa ou portuguesa, referentes a crianças, obtidos com as seguintes palavras-chave: "insect repellents", "children", "mosquitoes", "N,N-dietil-metatoluamida (DEET)". SÍNTESE DOS DADOS: Entre os repelentes tópicos, DEET, icaridina e óleo natural de eucalipto-limão apresentam, em concentrações adequadas, perfil de segurança favorável e são eficazes na prevenção de picadas de mosquitos em crianças e adultos. Em geral, são indicados para crianças acima de dois anos de idade. Medidas físicas são fundamentais para proteger lactentes jovens, especialmente menores de seis meses, com destaque para o uso de telas com permetrina. CONCLUSÕES: Os mosquitos são vetores de doenças infectoparasitárias que acometem, anualmente, milhões de pessoas no mundo e causam milhares de mortes. O combate aos mosquitos inclui medidas ambientais e de proteção individual. O uso de repelentes tópicos para proteção individual da criança exige cuidados específicos e conhecimento quanto ao produto ideal para cada idade, especialmente quando consideradas sua eficácia e segurança.OBJECTIVE: To present a literature review about the use of insect repellents on children, highlighting the protection against mosquitoes. DATA SOURCES: Pubmed and Lilacs databases were searched for articles in English and Portuguese published in the last ten years with the following key-words: "insect repellents", "children", "mosquitoes", "N,N-dietil-metatoluamida (DEET)". DATA SYNTHESIS: Concerning topical repellents, DEET, icaridine and natural oil of lemon eucalyptus are effective to prevent mosquito bites in children and adults and have favorable safety profile when used in appropriate concentration. They are generally recommended for children older than two years-old. Physical barriers are essential for infant protection, especially if they are six months old or less, with special interest in the permethrin-treated nets. CONCLUSIONS: Mosquitoes are vectors of a variety of infectious and parasitic diseases which annually affect millions of people and cause thousands of deaths worldwide. The combat to mosquitoes includes individual and environmental measures. Topic repellents for children's individual protection demand specific handling attention and knowledge about the ideal product for each age, especially regarding their efficacy and safety
Bone healing response in cyclically loaded implants : comparing zero, one, and two loading sessions per day
When bone implants are loaded, they are inevitably subjected to displacement relative to bone. Such micromotion
generates stress/strain states at the interface that can cause beneficial or detrimental sequels. The objective
of this study is to better understand the mechanobiology of bone healing at the tissue-implant interface
during repeated loading. Machined screw shaped Ti implants were placed in rat tibiae in a hole slightly bigger
than the implant diameter. Implants were held stable by a specially-designed bone plate that permits controlled
loading. Three loading regimens were applied, (a) zero loading, (b) one daily loading session of 60 cycles with an
axial force of 1.5 N/cycle for 7 days, and (c) two such daily sessions with the same axial force also for 7 days.
Finite element analysis was used to characterize the mechanobiological conditions produced by the loading
sessions. After 7 days, the implants with surrounding interfacial tissue were harvested and processed for histological,
histomorphometric and DNA microarray analyses. Histomorphometric analyses revealed that the
group subjected to repeated loading sessions exhibited a significant decrease in bone-implant contact and increase
in bone-implant distance, as compared to unloaded implants and those subjected to only one loading
session. Gene expression profiles differed during osseointegration between all groups mainly with respect to
inflammatory and unidentified gene categories. The results indicate that increasing the daily cyclic loading of
implants induces deleterious changes in the bone healing response, most likely due to the accumulation of tissue
damage and associated inflammatory reaction at the bone-implant interface
Effect of the Ages of Parasitoid and Host Eggs on Telenomus podisi (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) Parasitism.
This study investigates the influence of parasitoid age and egg age of the hosts Euschistus heros (Fabricius) and Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas) on parasitism of Telenomus podisi Ashmead. Six separate bioassays were conducted: parasitism on eggs of E. heros (bioassay 1) and D. melacanthus (bioassay 2) by T. podisi females of different age (1, 5, and 10 days old); parasitism by T. podisi on eggs of different age (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 days of embryonic development) of the hosts E. heros (bioassay 3) and D. melacanthus (bioassay 4); preference of T. podisi females for eggs at different embryonic developmental stages (eggs of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 days) of the hosts E. heros (bioassay 5) and D. melacanthus (bioassay 6). The age of T. podisi females and their hosts affected parasitism on both E. heros and D. melacanthus eggs. Overall, the parasitism rate was higher in older than younger parasitoids, independent of the tested host species, and host eggs between 1 and 3 days old were similarly parasitized. Thus, in T. podisi mass rearing facilities, it is recommended to use older adults (5 to 10 days old) as mother wasps to increase parasitism on the offered eggs. In addition, when hosts are completely absent in the field, or climatic conditions are unfavorable for release, mass-reared adults can be kept in the laboratory (25°C) for up to 10 days for later release in the field without any impairment of their subsequent parasitism performance
Hipogamaglobulinemia secundária ao uso de carbamazepina: apresentação de caso clínico e revisão da literatura
As alterações imunológicas relacionadas ao uso de anti-convulsivantes têm sido descrita há três décadas, envolvendo alterações celulares e humorais, sendo os mecanismos fisiopatológicos ainda não totalmente elucidados. Este relato descreve o caso de paciente portador de epilepsia parcial complexa com hipogamaglobulinemia durante o tratamento com carbamazepina, tendo apresentado melhora clínica e laboratorial importantes após substituição da droga pelo ácido valpróico. Os autores ressaltam a importância do acompanhamento clínico e laboratorial, incluindo avaliação dos níveis de imunoglobulinas e hemogramas seriados dos pacientes em uso contínuo de anticonvulsivantes.Immunologic disorders related to anticonvulsant therapy have been described in the last three decades, including cellular and humoral alterations that result in recurrent infections; however, the physiopathologic mechanisms are not completely understood. This report describes a patient with complex partial epilepsy and hypogammaglobulinemia while in treatment with carbamazepine, with significant improvement in clinical signs and laboratory tests after substitution to sodium valproate. The authors stress the importance of clinical and laboratory evaluation of patients in continuous anticonvulsant therapy, including immunoglobulins levels and peripheral blood evaluations
Seasonal and Sexual Differences in the Microbiota of the Hoopoe Uropygial Secretion
The uropygial gland of hoopoe nestlings and nesting females hosts bacterial symbionts that
cause changes in the characteristics of its secretion, including an increase of its antimicrobial activity.
These changes occur only in nesting individuals during the breeding season, possibly associated
with the high infection risk experienced during the stay in the hole-nests. However, the knowledge
on hoopoes uropygial gland microbial community dynamics is quite limited and based so far on
culture-dependent and molecular fingerprinting studies. In this work, we sampled wild and captive
hoopoes of different sex, age, and reproductive status, and studied their microbiota using quantitative
polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and pyrosequencing.
Surprisingly, we found a complex bacterial community in all individuals (including non-nesting
ones) during the breeding season. Nevertheless, dark secretions from nesting hoopoes harbored
significantly higher bacterial density than white secretions from breeding males and both sexes in
winter. We hypothesize that bacterial proliferation may be host-regulated in phases of high infection
risk (i.e., nesting). We also highlight the importance of specific antimicrobial-producing bacteria
present only in dark secretions that may be key in this defensive symbiosis. Finally, we discuss the
possible role of environmental conditions in shaping the uropygial microbiota, based on differences
