HEP@Home - A distributed computing system based on BOINC

Project SETI@HOME has proven to be one of the biggest successes of distributed computing during the last years. With a quite simple approach SETI manages to process large volumes of data using a vast amount of distributed computer power. To extend the generic usage of this kind of distributed computing tools, BOINC is being developed. In this paper we propose HEP@HOME, a BOINC version tailored to the specific requirements of the High Energy Physics (HEP) community. The HEP@HOME will be able to process large amounts of data using virtually unlimited computing power, as BOINC does, and it should be able to work according to HEP specifications. In HEP the amounts of data to be analyzed or reconstructed are of central importance. Therefore, one of the design principles of this tool is to avoid data transfer. This will allow scientists to run their analysis applications and taking advantage of a large number of CPUs. This tool also satisfies other important requirements in HEP, namely, security, fault-tolerance and monitoring.Comment: 4 pages, 4 Postscript figures, uses CHEP2004.cls, submitted to CHEP200

Julião Sarmento: The Innuendo of the Real

    Get PDF
Julião Sarmento’s body of work crosses artistic disciplines and fields. The artist resorts to film and video as a means to reach the artistic expression of an idea, open to an infinitude of interpretations. This audiovisual essay looks at the way Julião Sarmento works with moving images, focusing in three main perspectives: the word, the (feminine) body and rhythm. We conclude that each one of Sarmento’s works builds a system of codes, of communication, that opens new understandings of the human relation with the ‘real’

Experience with the Open Source based implementation for ATLAS Conditions Data Management System

    Get PDF
Conditions Data in high energy physics experiments is frequently seen as every data needed for reconstruction besides the event data itself. This includes all sorts of slowly evolving data like detector alignment, calibration and robustness, and data from detector control system. Also, every Conditions Data Object is associated with a time interval of validity and a version. Besides that, quite often is useful to tag collections of Conditions Data Objects altogether. These issues have already been investigated and a data model has been proposed and used for different implementations based in commercial DBMSs, both at CERN and for the BaBar experiment. The special case of the ATLAS complex trigger that requires online access to calibration and alignment data poses new challenges that have to be met using a flexible and customizable solution more in the line of Open Source components. Motivated by the ATLAS challenges we have developed an alternative implementation, based in an Open Source RDBMS. Several issues were investigated land will be described in this paper: -The best way to map the conditions data model into the relational database concept considering what are foreseen as the most frequent queries. -The clustering model best suited to address the scalability problem. -Extensive tests were performed and will be described. The very promising results from these tests are attracting the attention from the HEP community and driving further developments.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, conferenc

Portuguese culture has always been interconnected with nautical culture. Nowadays, Portugal is a powerful country in canoeing. Besides athletes, excellent training places, Portugal is one of the best manufacturers of canoes and kayaks in the world. To have a constant evolution in the design of the boats, it is crucial to study the hydrodynamics of canoes. Therefore, the present work arises in the context of the lack of scientific studies in the area of hydrodynamics in canoeing, mainly the C1 boat. In this dissertation, simulations of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) were performed in order to simulate the water and air flow around the hull of two canoes to evaluate their performance. For this, the Fluid Volume method (VoF) was used to simulate the free surface, and the turbulence model ?e Standard to simulate the turbulence. A mesh independence study was also carried out to ensure that the mesh used does not affect the intended results. The software used for this analysis was Ansys Fluent 2019 R3. In order to validate the numerical study, experimental tests were performed at full scale. The numerical model was then applied to the two vessels, where the resistance to advance of the canoes, at a range of velocities was studied, as well as for different pitch angle. Also for comparison purposes the wave elevation, as well as the effect of the flow velocity, in both canoes were evaluated. For the C1 5 L model, the values were overestimated numerically, while for the other model, the C1 8 L, the results were closer to the values obtained experimentally. Other numerical studies have shown similar problems, which possibly has to do with the exact determination of the waterline position, which significantly influences the final results.

Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Engenharia MecânicaThis academic work consists in the study of mechanisms that can validate the technical specifications of a certain product, in this case, an EGR Module. Initially, an analysis about the origin of these systems, their functionality and how they are produced was made. This part of the work gives most of the theoretical knowledge necessary to procced to the study of the main subject: Automatic Validation of Technical Specifications of Complex Products. Then, a study of a specific EGR Module was carried out, going through every phase of its development, starting with Design Development, where the product was drawn, and several design alterations were made due to failures in the test benches and simulations. The Process Development starts with the design freeze of the last design of the Design Development, the dimensioning of the tools specific for this product and with flow-chart of the process, which gives for the first time an overlook of the process itself. After this the production line starts to be designed to fulfill the demands of the client. In this production line design, there is seen how it is possible to assure the quality of the product and which machines are fully responsible for controlling the specifications of the product. Finally, the production line is validated with multiple tests that measures how the measure process is exact, precise and feasible, being done MSAs, R@R, Capability Tests, etc.

On the presence of the Ponto-Caspian hydrozoan Cordylophora caspia (Pallas, 1771) in an Iberian estuary: highlights on the introduction vectors and invasion routes

Several non-native invertebrate and vertebrate species have been detected in the Guadiana Estuary (SW-Iberian Peninsula, Europe) during the 21st century. In June 2015, the non-native hydroid Cordylophora caspia (Pallas, 1771) was detected for the first time in this estuary, which motivated an assessment of its distribution during late Spring and Summer 2016. The main goals of this paper were to: i) report the presence of Cordylophora caspia and its distribution in the Guadiana Estuary, ii) record the substrates colonized, salinity, and water temperatures at locations where the species was detected, iii) evaluate possible introduction vectors and invasion routes; and iv) discuss the potential impacts and management options. Cordylophora caspia occupied a 25-km stretch of the estuary with salinities between 0.2 and 13.8 and occupied a variety of human-made substrates. Shipping was the most likely introduction vector of C. caspia, which might have originated from populations in the Atlantic Ocean or the Mediterranean Sea. Currently, the potential ecological impacts are likely low since the population size is small due to an apparent shortage of suitable habitat. Economic effects are minimal at present because there are no major industries along the basin extracting water from the estuary. An integrated ecohydrological approach-i.e. freshets released from dams to control the populations of Cnidaria-was proposed to minimize or mitigate the potential negative effects of this species in the Guadiana Estuary.Delta Stewardship Council; Delta Science Program [1167]; Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, Portugal) through the Jellyfisheries project [PTDC/MAR-BIO/0440/2014]; European Regional Development Fund (COMPETE program-Operational Competitiveness Programme); FCT [SFRH/BPD/108949/2015]; [UID/Multi/04326/2013]info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
