Using a convenience sampling of 10 eighth-grade language arts students, this exploratory case study examined in depth the literacy processes used by ten 8th grade students to generate various multimodal artifacts that comprise their final projects and the nature of the literacy transactions that fostered these processes over the course of one year in this language arts classroom. Following closely (via the case studies in Chapter Five) how four of the ten students used the literacy events of the classroom to claim spaces to perceive and perform their voices and visions, the study revealed how these students were able to turn away from a specific form of silencing, both on and off the page, and reclaim a lost voice that helped them better navigate their lives and their literacies. This navigation transcended classroom walls to encompass larger social arenas in which students continued to perform and practice their literary and living choices. I conducted three focus group interviews with all ten students. The purpose of these interviews was to define, from these students’ perspectives, the literacy practices they engaged in over the course of the 2012-2013 academic year as part of their eighth-grade language arts class. In studying how these transactions helped shape these students’ literate thinking, my intent was to investigate ways in which both local and global contexts interact to help students promote or resist social and political trends. The study brought into question and deconstructed the grand narratives surrounding our American identity and the traditional literacies that serve to define and legitimize them. My findings revealed that the literacy events in the classroom, facilitated and negotiated by an interested and knowledgeable adult, offered these ten students a wide range of personal ways to practice, in new and innovative ways, both academic and personal choices

Parenting in Egypt: Recommendations for a parenting program for upper and middle class Egyptians

    Get PDF
Parenting is key for the healthy development of children. It is a complex role that requires a great deal of support. Parenting or parent education programs are good tools for supporting parents but they are not widely available in Egypt, and the ones that are available may not be culturally sensitive to the Egyptian context. In order to develop an effective parenting program, an assessment of parenting training and support needs was conducted. An online survey was administered to parents (n = 255, 47% completion rate) of children aged 0 to 12 to assess their knowledge of child development, their parenting and disciplining style, their perceptions of their strengths and struggles as parents, and their interest and needs in a parenting program. The participants exhibited some knowledge of child development with various gaps and misconceptions. Their parenting styles were inconsistent with discipline a mix of lax and harsh practices. Their saw their strengths as lying in loving and educating, and identified challenges with discipline. They also expressed interest in participating in parenting programs. Suggestions for developing parenting programs in Egypt are made based on these results. Further research is required to better understand Egyptian parenting in order to provide appropriate support for their own and their children’s wellbeing

Questions: Are there connections and trade-offs between Lean Construction (LC) and Sustainable Construction (SC)? If so, what is needed to support their integration in theory and practice? What are the gaps in knowledge and the opportunities for bringing closer linkage between research and practice? Purpose: A growing body of knowledge has been emerging from the International Group for Lean Construction (IGLC) community, in relation to synergies between LC and Sustainability. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to critically review the progress made towards integrating LC and SC in theory and practice, in order to provide a conceptual consolidation of this knowledge. Research Method: A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of ‘LC and Sustainability’ studies published in proceedings of the IGLC annual conferences over the past 25 years, using a qualitative approach to research synthesis. Findings: This study presents the main synergies and inconsistencies between LC and SC, reveals the main limitations in approaches to LC and SC, exposes potential enablers for integrating LC and SC, and divulges opportunities for further research Limitations: This SLR study only includes peer-reviewed papers published by the IGLC and excludes the wider construction literature. Implications: The findings of this study advance the research agenda providing the potential to develop sustainable improvements in practice

Corpus-Assisted Analysis of Robert Frost’s Poem, “Into My Own” Using AntConc

    Get PDF
This study aims to analyse the lexical features of one of Robert Frost’s poems, ‘Into My Own’ using Laurence Anthony’s AntConc. Based on a qualitative approach, the descriptive method was used to examine the information retrieved from the quantitative analysis of the literary text. The keyword method is to find out the most frequent words. Results show that corpus-assisted quantification of linguistic phenomena reveal more evidence than past studies which were intuitively analysed. Therefore, the findings indicate that using computer toolkits to analyse literary texts, mainly poems is possible by investigating lexical features to enhance themes, in this particular poem, the theme is a journey of independence. This study shows that the selection of only lexical features may seem insufficient but, eventually it is not possible to study all the poem’s linguistic features

    Get PDF
The survival and growth rates of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) were reported to be affected by light conditions. One of the methods to understand the effects of light conditions on fish survival and growth rates is through analysing the aggressive behaviour of the fish. The objective of the present study was to analyse the aggressive behaviours of African catfish juveniles under different light intensities and light wavelengths. For this purpose, the behaviour of African catfish juveniles (average body weight = 0.45 ± 0.19; average total length = 35.2 ± 5.0) was observed under three light intensities (0.0014, 0.014, and 1.40 μmoles/m²/s) and five light wavelengths (white, blue, green, yellow, and red). The results showed that the aggressive behaviour of the fish was significantly affected by light intensities and light wavelengths. Among the three light intensities, the juveniles showed less aggressive behaviour under 0.0014 μmoles/m²/s. Furthermore, the juveniles also showed less aggressive behaviour under the yellow light. Therefore, the rearing of African catfish juveniles under of 0.0014 μmoles/m²/s and yellow light wavelength is recommended

The present study was designed to evaluate the capacity of ginger to repair the oxidative stress induced by ammonium nitrate. 50 male rats were divided into 5 groups; they underwent an oral treatment of ammonium nitrate and/or ginger (N mg/kg body weight + G% in diet) during 30 days. Group I served as control (C); group II (G) received a diet with 2% of ginger; group III (N) received a toxic dose of ammonium nitrate and normal diet; group IV (NG) received a toxic dose of ammonium nitrate and a diet containing 2% ginger and group V (N+G) received a highly toxic dose of ammonium nitrate and an experimental diet containing 2% ginger. The treatment by ammonium nitrate was found to elicit a rise in blood biochemical parameters, a disorder in hematological parameters and significant decrease in the tissue glutathione level. Feeding ginger supplemented diets to ammonium nitrate treated rats restored all the parameters studied compared to the controls. These findings suggest that ginger treatment exerts a protective effect on metabolic disorders by decreasing oxidative stress. Keywords: Ammonium nitrate, toxicity, ginger, oxidative stress, rats.African Journal of Biotechnology Vol. 12(40), pp. 5909-591

This paper deals with the ideological positioning of the English poet, Rudyard Kipling in a selected poem, entitled “If”, as regards to the theme of the heroic attributes of ―Wisdom, Strength, and Courtesy. The researcher adopts a branch of stylistics, called Critical Stylistics, as proposed by Jeffries (2010) in order to uncover the ideologies of the poet regarding the topic concerned and how linguistic choices are used to display his ideas. The model is comprised of ten tools of analysis which, upon being applied to the selected poem, have shown how the poet exploits language resources in order to pass his ideology and influence his readers. In this paper, the ten tools are presented as applied to the whole poem. The objective of the study is to examine how Kipling’s poem astonishingly excels in giving advice and how it is easier to give advice than being guided by it. The model of stylistics used in this analysis also includes in it these tools that have predominantly been applied to small-scale qualitative analyses. Findings from the analysis reveal the ways in which sets of beliefs and advice may be structured in the language of wisdom and compassion, and, more specifically, the ways in which Kipling’s ideological attitudes and assumptions are embedded in the structure of his poems. Moreover, how this poem articulates the significance of burying the gap between the generations. The old should instruct and the young in turn should listen and learn from the experiences of the old. Such ideological assumptions about listening to the previous generation experiences and have the liberty to abide by or reject their ways of thinking

Lean Construction and Sustainability through IGLC Community: A Critical Systematic Review of 25 Years of Experience

    Get PDF
It has been argued that Lean Construction (LC) offers the conceptual basis and the appropriate methods and tools needed for helping the construction industry meet the challenges of sustainable development. Since 1998, a growing body of knowledge has been emerging from the IGLC community, in relation to synergies between LC and Sustainability. Both seek to reduce waste and maximise value, but through different approaches and perspectives. The most common mistake, however, is a tool-focused framework for integration, which overlooks the conceptual differences between these two initiatives. The aim of this study, therefore, is to review the progress made in understanding the linkages and inconsistencies between the two initiatives, through conducting a critical systematic literature review (SLR) and synthesising the findings of ‘LC and Sustainability’ studies published in IGLC conferences over the past 25 years. The findings of the study provide an overview of previous studies about the topic, reveal major limitations in approaches to LC and Sustainable Construction (SC), and divulge significant opportunities for further work that remain unexplored

Predicting suspended sediment load is essential to identify its intensity and define necessary actions for its reduction. Mathematical models simulating suspended sediment load are an interesting tool for this purpose. Themethodological approachadopted in this article consists in looking for a regressive model that can better explain the suspended sediment discharge through flow discharge by studying this relationship at different temporal scales. The work comprises analyzing and quantifying thesuspended sediment intakes conveyed by theEl-Malah East river at the Beni Slimane gauging station towards the Koudiat Acerdoune reservoir. Theavailable data covers the period from 1973/74 to 1988/1989 for instantaneous measurements of liquid flow discharge Ql–Suspended sediment concentration C and the period from 1985/86 to 1996/97 for daily mean flow discharges and daily mean precipitations. Only power relations obtained on a seasonal scale giving the best coefficient of determination have been selected for the quantification of suspended sediment load conveyed by El-Malah river at Beni Slimane hydrometric station in the period of availability of daily mean flow discharges (1985/86 to 1996/97). The optimization of suspended sediment rating curves has been validated by comparison of the estimated values with the observed data and by fitting Normal distribution to residues datasets. The use of these models has highlighted an intra-annual distribution of the suspended sediment contributions conveyed bythe El-Malah East river at Beni Slimane hydrometric station estimated at 0.088 Mt per year, representing aspecific degradation of about 325 t.km-2y-1 (423 t.km-2y-1 of suspended and bed loads). The results have also shown that the highest liquid intake occurs in spring (45.72 %), winter (32.36 %) and autumn (11.93 %) seasons. This distribution, as well as the distribution of the monthly rainfalls, allowed the conclusion that the runoff period does not always correspond to the rainy period. The highest precipitation occurs in winter (38.74 %), spring (32.25 %) and autumn (21.53 %) seasons. The intra-annual distribution of suspended sediment contributions showed that winter and autumn participate in each one with 28.31 and 27.03% of the total suspended sediment load annually, while summer and spring participate with 23.28 and 21.38 %, respectively. The obtained results can be verified and improved by increasing the size of the available series. They provide appreciable elements of comparison for others basins of the same order, located in semi-arid and aridregions and subjected to similar phenomena. They also allow river basin managers and policymakers to consider necessary actions to fight against land erosion, preserve human activities, increase the life of the Koudiet Acerdoune dam 60 km downstream from the watershed outlet, facilitate decision-making and planning, and ensure effective management
