    Multivalued linear transformations of hyperspaces

    The purpose of this paper is the study of multivalued linear transformations of hypervector spaces (or hyperspaces) in the sense of Tallini. In this regards first we introduce and study various multivalued linear transformations of hyperspaces and then constitute the categories of hyperspaces with respect the different linear transformations of hyperspaces as the morphisms in these categories. Also, we construct some algebraic hyperoperations on Hom K (V,W), the set of all multivalued linear transformations from a hyperspace V into hyperspaces W, and obtaine their basic properties. Finally, we construct the fundamental functor F from HV K , category of hyperspaces over field K into V K , the category of clasical vector space over K

    Epidemiology of orthopedic trauma in children and adolescent in a referral center in Tehran: A prospective study

    Background: Orthopedic trauma is a common type of injury in children and may cause deep and permanent psychological and physical damage both for the patient and the parents. This study aimed to analyze the epidemiology age, gender distribution and the mechanism of injury in patients presenting to a level I trauma center in urban population of Tehran. Methods: In this prospective descriptive study, the patients under 19 years old with orthopedic trauma who were hospitalized in Tehran Shafa University Hospital were entered. This hospital is the main orthopedic referral center in Iran. The patients were prospectively evaluated from April 2013 to March 2014. The data were collected and analyzed. Results: The study included 1081 patients under 19 years old. There was a male predominance (76.8 n= 830). The boys had a higher mean age 11.04±5.06 year, versus girls with mean age 8.67±4.63 year (P< 0.05). The peak age of boys was 18 and the girls had two peaks at three and nine. The fractures occurred in upper limb in 70.8 (n= 621) and 29.2 (n= 256) in lower limb of patients. There were 27 cases with joint dislocation, 5 cases with knee ligamentous injuries, 128 cases with soft tissue injuries and 44 cases with spine injuries. The most frequent mechanism in both gender were falls from standing position (48.5). The most common fractures were foreman both bone fractures (n: 146 16.7), elbow supracondylar fractures (n: 134, 15.3) and distal radius fractures (n: 84, 9.6). The most fractures occurred in summer (30.1) and the least in winter (18.1). Conclusion: Evaluation of epidemiologic factors can lead to the best prediction and treatment planning of trauma. Early recognition of injury, even minor, and expected care using specialized teams will help to improve outcomes for these patients. This study determines the most at risk children for trauma and fractures and may help the parents to prevent damage. © 2015, Tehran University of Medical Sciences. All rights reserved

    Evaluation of FRP concrete compression member under repeated load and harsh environment

    Strengthening and rehabilitation have been increasingly applied in many structures to improve their capacity and serviceability. Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) materials are universally known for their ability to improve the load capacity of damaged structural elements because of their high linear-elastic behavior. However, enhancing the capacity of structural elements that are exposed to repeated load coupled with harsh environment is an area that requires further investigation. This research focused on experimental analysis of the behavior and response of confined and unconfined concrete compression members (300mm x 150mm) under repeated load while exposed to 1440 cycles of seawater splash zone in United Arab Emirates (UAE). Confining concrete compression members with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) sheets have increased the load capacity compared to the control sample at room temperature by 110% and 84%, respectively. Results showed that the average value of compressive strength for the confined concrete exposed to sea water splash zone conditions for CFRP and GFRP specimens has decreased by 33% and 23%, respectively, compared to the confined concrete in the room temperature. However, GFRP specimens showed higher performance in compressive strength under sea water splash zone than those of the CFRP specimens. Different mode of failures such as delamination, de-bonding and combination of such modes were observed and related to various exposure factors and mechanical properties

    Characteristics of traumatic brain injury among accident and falling down cases

    Motor vehicle and falling down are responsible for the most number of traumatic injuries. This study aimed to compare the characteristics of traumatic brain injury among accident and falling down cases. In this analytical cross- sectional study, data were collected from the records of cadavers who died due to accident or falling down and referred to Kahrizak dissection hall, Tehran forensic medicine organization during 2013. A total of 237 subjects (183 (77.2) accident and 54 (22.8) falling down) with a mean age of 35.62 (SD=15.75) were evaluated. A number of 213 (89.9) were male. From accident group, scalp injury was seen in 146 (79.8), scalp abrasion in 122 (66.7), scalp laceration in 104 (56.8), sub skull bruising in 176 (96.3), skull fracture in 119 (65), hemorrhage in 166 (90.7), Subdural hemorrhage (SDH) in 155 (84.7), Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in 161 (88), Epidural hemorrhage (EDH) in 41 (22.4), contusion in 140 (76.5), and skull base fracture in 140 (76.5) of cases. In falling down group scalp injury was seen in 42 (77.8) cadavers, scalp abrasion in 38 (70.4), scalp laceration in 30 (55.6), sub skull bruising in 49 (90.7), skull fracture in 39 (72.2), Hemorrhage in 49 (90.7), SDH in 43 (79.6), SAH in 47 (87), EDH in 10 (18.5), contusion in 33 (61.1), and skull base fracture in 39 (72.2) of cases. There was no significant difference between these two groups (P Value> 0.05).     Scanned Imaging Techniques for Surface NDE

    A phase sensitive laser probe in which the focussed spot is small, as compared with the acoustic wavelength, is capable of measuring the complex distributions of a SAW field along prescribed scan lines. Using the probe, it is possible, on a defect free sample, to measure the SAW velocity surface with an accuracy of a few parts in 105. Such accuracy suggests that the technique is sufficiently sensitive to detect small changes in surface characteristics; the presence of a defect is revealed by perturbations in the relationship between various scans. The scattered radiation patterns from a surface crack irradiated by acoustic surface waves can be utilised to determine the defect size and location with improved accuracy. Results on deliberate and real cracks are presented

    A coherent laser probe provides the basis for the recording of complex SAW distributions. Using three or more scans, the surface wave velocity can be deducep with an accuracy of a few parts in 105. Such measurements are sufficiently sensitive to detect small changes in surface characteristics; as an example, results will be presented on the effect of doping a Si surface. It is also possible to improve the accuracy of the basic elastic constants of the material by reference to the velocity characteristic. Of particular importance is the fact that this technique provides evidence on the effective value of these constants close to a surface; it is, therefore potentially useful for surface layer characterisation. Surface defects can be detected by means of scattered waves in both the forward as the reverse directions. In principle, either can be used to image the defect. Using both these components, the defect size and location can be determined with improved accuracy

    Prevalence of Alcohol Consumption among University Students in Baghdad: A Cross-section survey from Iraq

    Background: Alcohol consumption is a well-known public health problem, especially among university students. It was poorly studied in Middle East, especially in Iraq, due to religious and social taboos. This study conducted to throw a light on the prevalence of Alcohol consumption among university students in Baghdad. Subjects and methods: A survey conducted in three universities (Baghdad, Al-Mustansiriyah and Al-Nahrain) from Baghdad city, in the duration between January and May 2015.A semi-structured questionnaire form used to collect the data from 1435 university students. The sample selected by multistage random sampling technique with probability proportion to size. Results: The average age (range) of the studied sample was 19.8 (18 - 24) years; more than a half of them were females 760 (53%). Alcohol consumption was reported by 9.7% (95%CI: 8.2% - 11.2%) of the participants (19.7% males vs. 0.8% females). Heavy Alcohol consumption was reported by 12.2% of consumers. Male students living out of their families or relatives and those of medical group colleges found to be risk factors for Alcohol consumption (PR= 2.65, 95% CI: 1.72 - 4.1) and (PR= 2.72, 95%CI: 1.48 - 5.01) respectively. No significant relations showed between demographic characters of female students and Alcohol consumption. Conclusions: Usage of Alcohol was relatively prevalent among university students in Baghdad, in spite of religious and social barriers in Iraq. Family and college staff supervision and education of the students with meetings targeting health risks and sequels of Alcohol hazardous consumption are the effective ways to control this practice
