The role of the mentor in professional knowledge development across four professions
Purpose - Against a British policy backdrop, which places an ever-increasing emphasis on workplace learning in pre-service professional programmes, this paper investigates the contribution of the mentor to professional knowledge development in nursing, paramedicine, social work and teaching. Approach - Taking the form of a literature review, it explores the influence of policy, professional and theoretical conceptualisations of the mentor role and structural factors influencing the mentorâs contribution to professional knowledge. Findings - Where there are clearly delineated policy obligations for the mentor to âteachâ mentees, mentors are more likely to make connections between theoretical and practical knowledge. When this responsibility is absent or informal, they are inclined to attend to the development of contextual knowledge with a consequent disconnect between theory and practice. In all four professions, mentors face significant challenges, especially with regard to the conflict between supporting and assessor roles and the need to attend to heavy contractual workloads, performance targets and mentoring roles in tandem. Practical implications - The authors argue first for the need for more attention to the pedagogy of mentoring and second, for structural changes to workload allocations, career progression and mentoring education. In order to develop more coherent and interconnected professional knowledge between different domains, and the reconciliation of different perspectives, it would be useful to underpin mentoring pedagogy with Bhabhaâs notion of âthird spaceâ. Originality - The paper contributes to the field since it considers new obligations incumbent on mentors to assist mentees in reconciling theoretical and practical knowledge by consequence of policy and takes a multi-professional perspective

Tactile Gloves for Autonomous Grasping With the NASA/DARPA Robonaut
Tactile data from rugged gloves are providing the foundation for developing autonomous grasping skills for the NASA/DARPA Robonaut, a dexterous humanoid robot. These custom gloves compliment the human like dexterity available in the Robonaut hands. Multiple versions of the gloves are discussed, showing a progression in using advanced materials and construction techniques to enhance sensitivity and overall sensor coverage. The force data provided by the gloves can be used to improve dexterous, tool and power grasping primitives. Experiments with the latest gloves focus on the use of tools, specifically a power drill used to approximate an astronaut's torque tool
The opportunities and challenges to co-designing policy options for tree health with policy makers, researchers and land managers
\ua9 2023. We describe experiences between 2018 and 2021 co-designing tree health policy options linked with the UK\u27s evolving land use policy post EU-Exit within the Future Farming and Countryside Programme. Policy makers, researchers and more than 250 land managers took part in a series of co-design engagements in a three-phase iterative co-design process that culminated in a new Tree Health Pilot. After defining the components of co-design, we describe how relationships between policy makers, researchers and land managers were built, the methods researchers introduced into the process to build capability and support participation, and the outcomes in terms of the key opportunities and challenges for policy co-design. We conclude that it is possible to move policy design beyond user focused research and into co-design. However, this relies on adequate time and resources required to build trust and fully engage all parties in a meaningful way, including the development of tools and techniques that include experimentation, different knowledge types, and moving from research and evidence collection into design. Having policy makers with participatory mindsets in the same space as land managers was important to facilitating active learning between all of those involved in the collective. Researchers played a critical role in the co-design, balancing the views and understandings of the policy community with those of the land manager community, facilitating learning, and selecting tools and techniques to make design options explicit. We conclude that policy co-design in the land-based and environmental sector is a real opportunity at an early stage of realisation, but the effectiveness and range of positive and negative outcomes and impacts will need to be evaluated in the future
Measuring the quantum efficiency of single radiating dipoles using a scanning mirror
Using scanning probe techniques, we show the controlled manipulation of the
radiation from single dipoles. In one experiment we study the modification of
the fluorescence lifetime of a single molecular dipole in front of a movable
silver mirror. A second experiment demonstrates the changing plasmon spectrum
of a gold nanoparticle in front of a dielectric mirror. Comparison of our data
with theoretical models allows determination of the quantum efficiency of each

General Spectral Flow Formula for Fixed Maximal Domain
We consider a continuous curve of linear elliptic formally self-adjoint
differential operators of first order with smooth coefficients over a compact
Riemannian manifold with boundary together with a continuous curve of global
elliptic boundary value problems. We express the spectral flow of the resulting
continuous family of (unbounded) self-adjoint Fredholm operators in terms of
the Maslov index of two related curves of Lagrangian spaces. One curve is given
by the varying domains, the other by the Cauchy data spaces. We provide
rigorous definitions of the underlying concepts of spectral theory and
symplectic analysis and give a full (and surprisingly short) proof of our
General Spectral Flow Formula for the case of fixed maximal domain. As a side
result, we establish local stability of weak inner unique continuation property
(UCP) and explain its role for parameter dependent spectral theory.Comment: 22 page

Volatile organic compounds in northern New England marine and continental environments during the ICARTT 2004 campaign
Volatile organic compound (VOC) measurements were made during the summer 2004 International Consortium for Atmospheric Research on Transport and Transformation (ICARTT) at Thompson Farm (TF), a continental site 25 km from the New Hampshire coast, and Appledore Island (AI), a marine site 10 km off the Maine coast. The 24 h mean total hydroxyl radical (OH) reactivity (±1Ï) for the suite of VOCs was 4.15 (±2.64) sâ1 at TF and 2.57 (±1.10) sâ1 at AI. The larger range of reactivity at TF was dominated by isoprene and the monoterpenes (mean combined reactivity = 2.01 (±2.57) sâ1). The impact of local anthropogenic hydrocarbon sources such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) leakage and fossil fuel evaporation was evident at both sites. During the campaign, a propane flux of 9 (±2) Ă 109 molecules cmâ2 sâ1 was calculated from the linear regression of the mean 0100â0400 local time mixing ratios at TF. This is consistent with fluxes observed in 2003 at sites spread throughout the coastal area of New Hampshire indicating that LPG tank leakage is a major hydrocarbon source throughout the region. Net monoterpene fluxes during ICARTT at TF were 6 (±2), 1.8 (±0.4), 1.2 (±0.6), and 0.4 (±0.5) Ă 109 molecules cmâ2 sâ1 for αâpinene, ÎČâpinene, camphene, and limonene, respectively. Comparison to estimated NO3 and O3 loss rates indicate that gross monoterpene emission rates were approximately double the observed net fluxes at TF and comparable to current monoterpene nighttime emission inventory estimates for the northeast
Is it still worth searching for lepton flavor violation in rare kaon decays?
Prospective searches for lepton flavor violation (LFV) in rare kaon decays at
the existing and future intermediate-energy accelerators are considered. The
proposed studies are complementary to LFV searches in muon-decay experiments
and offer a unique opportunity to probe models with approximately conserved
fermion-generation quantum number with sensitivity superior to that in other
processes. Consequently, new searches for LFV in kaon decays are an important
and independent part of the general program of searches for lepton flavor
violation in the final states with charged leptons.Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures. An extended version of the talk given at the

Graduate Quantum Mechanics Reform
We address four main areas in which graduate quantum mechanics education can
be improved: course content, textbook, teaching methods, and assessment tools.
We report on a three year longitudinal study at the Colorado School of Mines
using innovations in all these areas. In particular, we have modified the
content of the course to reflect progress in the field in the last 50 years,
used textbooks that include such content, incorporated a variety of teaching
techniques based on physics education research, and used a variety of
assessment tools to study the effectiveness of these reforms. We present a new
assessment tool, the Graduate Quantum Mechanics Conceptual Survey, and further
testing of a previously developed assessment tool, the Quantum Mechanics
Conceptual Survey. We find that graduate students respond well to
research-based techniques that have been tested mainly in introductory courses,
and that they learn much of the new content introduced in each version of the
course. We also find that students' ability to answer conceptual questions
about graduate quantum mechanics is highly correlated with their ability to
solve calculational problems on the same topics. In contrast, we find that
students' understanding of basic undergraduate quantum mechanics concepts at
the modern physics level is not improved by instruction at the graduate level.Comment: accepted to American Journal of Physic
