Baseline Levels of Metals in Volcanic Soils of the Azores (Portugal)

Copyright © 2006, Taylor & Francis.Data on metal concentrations present in the soils of the Azores (Portugal) are scarce. The goal of this study was to measure the current levels of several metals in the top horizon of soils of two areas, distinguishable by their volcanic activity and physical characteristics, in order to establish some baseline concentrations of these elements. Soil samples were taken in similar ways from five sites in a volcanically active area and another five sites in an area without volcanic activity. Particle-size fractions, % organic matter, moisture content, pH, and major and trace elements compositions were measured. In general, the concentrations of trace metals in the soils from Santa Maria (inactive volcanism) were higher than those from Furnas (active volcanism), with the exception of Zn. The soils from Furnas, which have slightly lower pH and less % clay-silt than Santa Maria, will probably make such trace metals as Zn become more readily bioaccessible, and therefore pose a larger threat to living organisms inhabiting these soils.Centro de Investigação de Recursos Naturais (CIRN), University of the Azores. Literatura juvenil contemporânea: Representações de experiências homossexuais na escola

Este artigo tem por finalidade discutir os significados que são (re)produzidos em livros juvenis contemporâneos acerca da experiência homossexual masculina no espaço da escola. Utiliza-se da noção de experiência a partir de Jorge Larrosa. O corpus de análise é constituído por três livros de literatura juvenil LGBTI. Para as análises, utilizamos os princípios de exterioridade, reflexividade e subjetividade, segundo Larrosa. É possível observar que as instituições escolares desempenham um papel importante no que concerne à subjetivação das personagens, se mostrando uma instância (re)produtora de normas; é representada como lugar que legitima discursos homofóbicos, mas também como lugar de luta e promoção das diferenças, instituição que interpela a forma como as personagens atribuem sentido à experiência homossexual

The connective tissue index of Helix aspersa as a metal biomarker

Copyright © 2004, Springer Netherlands.The digestive gland of adult land snails, Helix aspersa, sampled from four different sites in São Miguel island (Azores) was submitted to chemical analyses, autometallography and haemalum/eosin staining, in order to quantify the relative abundance of heavy metals, calcium cells and connective tissue cells. Metals were visualized, through light microscopy, as black silver deposits mostly in the connective tissue cells. Metal levels, essentially of Cu and Fe, were related to the relative volumetric density of connective tissue cells but not to the relative volumetric density of calcium cells from the digestive gland epithelium. Thus, the connective tissue index presented herein is suggested as a biomarker of Cu exposure in terrestrial mollusks.Centro de Investigação em Recursos Naturais (CIRN), University of the Azores

Effects of plastic waste on the heat-induced spalling performance and mechanical properties of high strength concrete

This paper investigates a potential application of hard-to-recycle plastic waste as polymeric addition in high strength concrete, with a focus on the potential to mitigate heat-induced concrete spalling and the consequent effects on the mechanical properties. The waste corresponds to soft and hard plastic, including household polymers vastly disposed of in landfills, although technically recyclable. Mechanical and physical properties, cracking, mass loss, and the occurrence of spalling were assessed in high strength concrete samples produced with either plastic waste or polypropylene fibers after 2-h exposure to 600 ◦C. The analysis was supported by Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Computed Tomography images. The plastic waste is composed of different polymers with a thermal degradation between 250 to 500 ◦C. Polypropylene (PP) fibers and plastic waste dispersed in concrete have proved to play an essential role in mitigating heat-induced concrete spalling, contributing to the release of internal pressure after the polymer melting. The different morphology of plastic waste and polypropylene fibers leads to distinct mechanisms of action. While the vapor pressure dissipation network originated by polypropylene fibers is related to the formation of continuous channels, the plastic waste seems to cause discontinuous reservoirs and fewer damages into the concrete matrix. The incorporation of plastic waste improved heat-induced concrete spalling performance. While 6 kg/m3 of plastic increased the mechanical performance after exposure to high temperature, the incorporation of 3 kg/m3 resulted in mechanical properties comparable to the reference concrete

Literatura juvenil contemporânea: Representações de experiências homossexuais na escola

This article aims to discuss the meanings (re)produced in contemporary youth books about male homosexual experience in school space. We use the Jorge Larrosa’s notion of experience. The corpus of analysis consists in three books of youth LGBTI literature. For the analysis, we use the principles of exteriority, reflexivity and subjectivity according to Larrosa. It’s possible to observe that the school institutions play an important role in terms of the subjectivation of the characters if they show a (re)producing instance of norms; it is represented as a place that legitimizes homophobic discourses, but also as a place of fight and raise of differences, an institution that challenges the way in which characters attribute meaning to the homosexual experience.Este artículo tiene como finalidad discutir los significados (re)producidos en libros juveniles contemporáneos sobre la experiencia homosexual masculina en el espacio de la escuela. Se parte de la noción de experiencia de Jorge Larrosa. O corpus de análisis está constituido por tres libros de literatura juvenil LGBTI. Poder e Liderança em Organizações de Ensino Superior

Buscou-se identificar os problemas de ordem pessoal enfrentados pelos Diretores dos sete Centros de uma Instituição de Ensino Superior (IES) do interior de Santa Catarina. Para tanto, os objetivos específicos estavam vinculados a apresentar os problemas que os diretores enfrentam, além de agrupar os problemas comuns. Desta forma, utilizou-se uma abordagem humanista da pesquisa qualitativa, delineada como estudo de caso de cunho descritivo e interpretativo, com entrevistas semi-estruturadas. Os resultados indicaram que, independente de se estar trabalhando com Centros Universitários distintos, tais como; Saúde; Tecnológicas; Humanas e da Comunicação; Educação; Sociais Aplicadas; Exatas e Naturais e Direito; alguns problemas mostram-se comuns a todos. Os problemas pessoais identificados estão relacionados ao conhecimento das atividades que são desenvolvidas na função; ao julgamento enfrentado simultaneamente pelos pares, subordinados, funcionários administrativos, dentre outros; ao comprometimento dos professores e demais funcionários para com a IES; à administração dos conflitos diários existentes entre professores, funcionários e alunos; à negociação com os pares para a aquisição de equipamentos e a atualização tecnológica das áreas; e à relação ética necessária às tomadas de decisões por parte destes diretores. Assim, destacam-se a necessidade de mecanismos à captação, disseminação, armazenamento e disponiblização do conhecimento em uma IES

Bioavailability and cellular effects of metals on Lumbricus terrestris inhabiting volcanic soils

All rights reserved.Whether the radial thickness (RT) of the chloragogenous tissue and intestinal epithelium of earthworms (Lumbricus terrestris) reflects the bioavailability of metals in soils was investigated in two areas, one with active volcanism (Furnas) and another with no volcanic activity since 3 million years ago (Santa Maria), in the Azores. Metal contents in soil samples and earthworms from the two areas were analyzed. Autometallography and measurements of the RT were performed in the chloragogenous tissue and intestinal epithelium. Earthworms from the active volcanic area demonstrated lower RT of chloragogenous tissue and intestinal epithelium as well as higher levels of bioavailable metals, especially Zn and Cd. Comparison of bioavailable metal contents between both areas suggests a higher risk for uptake of potentially toxic metals in the active volcanic area than in the non-active volcanic area, which is reflected by the lower RT of the chloragogenous tissue and intestinal epithelium in the former.Centro de Investigação de Recursos Naturais (CIRN, University of the Azores), Direcção Regional da Ciência e Tecnologia (Government of the Azores), and the ETORTEK program from the Basque Government, through the BERRILUR project (IE03-110).
