    Centrality anomalies in complex networks as a result of model over-simplification

    Tremendous advances have been made in our understanding of the properties and evolution of complex networks. These advances were initially driven by information-poor empirical networks and theoretical analysis of unweighted and undirected graphs. Recently, information-rich empirical data complex networks supported the development of more sophisticated models that include edge directionality and weight properties, and multiple layers. Many studies still focus on unweighted undirected description of networks, prompting an essential question: how to identify when a model is simpler than it must be? Here, we argue that the presence of centrality anomalies in complex networks is a result of model over-simplification. Specifically, we investigate the well-known anomaly in betweenness centrality for transportation networks, according to which highly connected nodes are not necessarily the most central. Using a broad class of network models with weights and spatial constraints and four large data sets of transportation networks, we show that the unweighted projection of the structure of these networks can exhibit a significant fraction of anomalous nodes compared to a random null model. However, the weighted projection of these networks, compared with an appropriated null model, significantly reduces the fraction of anomalies observed, suggesting that centrality anomalies are a symptom of model over-simplification. Because lack of information-rich data is a common challenge when dealing with complex networks and can cause anomalies that misestimate the role of nodes in the system, we argue that sufficiently sophisticated models be used when anomalies are detected.Comment: 14 pages, including 9 figures.     Constructal design method dealing with stiffened plates and symmetry boundaries

    A new computational procedure for modelling the structural behavior of stiffened plates with symmetry boundary conditions is here presented. It uses two-dimensional finite elements as a way to decrease computational time without losing precision thanks to a relatively small number of elements applied for analyzing out-of-plane displacements (deflections) and stresses. Adding, the constructal design method was included in the procedure, together with the exhaustive search technique, with the scope to optimize the stress/strain status of stiffened plates by design changes. For the purpose, a reference plate without stiffeners was initially design and used as starting point. Part of the volume was reshaped into stiffeners: thickness was reduced maintaining unchanged weight, length and width. The main goal was to minimize strains and stresses by geometric changes. Results demonstrated that, thanks to this design procedure, it is always possible to find an adequate geometry transformation from reference plate into stiffeners, allowing significant improvements in mechanical behavior

    Escherichia coli phylogenetic group determination and its application in the identification of the major animal source of fecal contamination

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Escherichia coli </it>strains are commonly found in the gut microflora of warm-blooded animals. These strains can be assigned to one of the four main phylogenetic groups, A, B1, B2 and D, which can be divided into seven subgroups (A<sub>0</sub>, A<sub>1</sub>, B1, B2<sub>2</sub>, B2<sub>3</sub>, D<sub>1 </sub>and D<sub>2</sub>), according to the combination of the three genetic markers <it>chuA</it>, <it>yjaA </it>and DNA fragment TspE4.C2. Distinct studies have demonstrated that these phylo-groups differ in the presence of virulence factors, ecological niches and life-history. Therefore, the aim of this work was to analyze the distribution of these <it>E. coli </it>phylo-groups in 94 human strains, 13 chicken strains, 50 cow strains, 16 goat strains, 39 pig strains and 29 sheep strains and to verify the potential of this analysis to investigate the source of fecal contamination.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The results indicated that the distribution of phylogenetic groups, subgroups and genetic markers is non-random in the hosts analyzed. Strains from group B1 were present in all hosts analyzed but were more prevalent in cow, goat and sheep samples. Subgroup B2<sub>3 </sub>was only found in human samples. The diversity and the similarity indexes have indicated a similarity between the <it>E. coli </it>population structure of human and pig samples and among cow, goat and sheep samples. Correspondence analysis using contingence tables of subgroups, groups and genetic markers frequencies allowed the visualization of the differences among animal samples and the identification of the animal source of an external validation set. The classifier tools Binary logistic regression and Partial least square -- discriminant analysis, using the genetic markers profile of the strains, differentiated the herbivorous from the omnivorous strains, with an average error rate of 17%.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This is the first work, as far as we are aware, that identifies the major source of fecal contamination of a pool of strains instead of a unique strain. We concluded that the analysis of the <it>E. coli </it>population structure can be useful as a supplementary bacterial source tracking tool.</p

    Germination in developing seeds of Bixa orellana

    Com este trabalho objetivou-se investigar a aquisição da capacidade germinativa e o estabelecimento da dormência em sementes em desenvolvimento de Bixa orellana L. (urucum). Foram caracterizados 7 estádios de desenvolvimento das sementes, baseados nas características morfológicas, massa fresca, massa seca e teor de umidade dos frutos e das sementes. Sementes imaturas de B. orellana não germinaram durante os estádios iniciais de seu desenvolvimento. As sementes adquiriram a capacidade germinativa máxima quando os níveis de umidade declinaram para valores em torno de 60%. Nessa fase, as sementes apresentaram acúmulo máximo de massa seca. A dormência foi estabelecida quando as sementes exibiam um conteúdo de água em torno de 10%.The objective of this work was to investigate the acquisition of germination capacity and the onset of dormancy in developing seeds of Bixa orellana L. (annatto). Seven stages of development were characterized with regard to morphology, fresh and dry mass and moisture content of the fruits and seeds. Immature seeds of B. orellana did not germinate during early stages of their development. The seeds achieved their maximum germination capacity after the moisture content had declined to around 60%. In this phase the seeds presented maximum dry mass. The onset of dormancy occurred when the seeds exhibited water contents around 10%
