    Magnetic structure of antiferromagnetic NdRhIn5

    The magnetic structure of antiferromagnetic NdRhIn5 has been determined using neutron diffraction. It has a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with a magnetic wave vector (1/2,0,1/2) below T_N = 11K. The staggered Nd moment at 1.6K is 2.6mu_B aligned along the c-axis. We find the magnetic structure to be closely related to that of its cubic parent compound NdIn3 below 4.6K. The enhanced T_N and the absence of additional transitions below T_N for NdRhIn5 are interpreted in terms of an improved matching of the crystalline-electric-field (CEF), magnetocrystalline, and exchange interaction anisotropies. In comparison, the role of these competing anisotropies on the magnetic properties of the structurally related compound CeRhIn5 is discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Seroprevalence of and associated risk factors for Leptospira interrogans serovar Hardjo infection of cattle in Setif, Algeria

    Background: Leptospirosis is a cosmopolitan zoonosis caused by Leptospira interrogans responsible for heavy loss both economically and in health, in humans and animals. This study was conducted to determine the seroprevalence and risk factors associated with Leptospira interrogans serovar Hardjo infection in cattle in the state of Setif, northeastern Algeria.Methodology: Between the period 2015 and 2019, a total of 48 randomly selected herds of cattle were investigated, and 406 sera from apparently healthy cattle were analyzed using an indirect enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay (ELISA). In order to determine possible risk factors related to leptospirosis, a pre-validated questionnaire was administered to herd owners.Results: The herd prevalence of Leptospira interrogans serovar Hardjo was 31.25% (15/48, 95% CI 19.95–45.33) while the cattle prevalence was 5.42% (22/406, 95% CI 3.61–8.07). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that the age of cattle between 3 and 6 years (OR = 9.25; p< 0.03), breeding herd size > 20 cows (OR = 13.65; p< 0.01), and semi-intensive management system (OR = 0.21; p< 0,02) were significantly associated with seropositivity to Leptospira interrogans serovar Hardjo.Conclusion: We concluded from this study that Leptospira interrogans serovar Hardjo is circulating among cattle farms in the state of Setif, Algeria. Furthermore, we recommend more studies to be carried out to prove the infectivity and implementation good hygienic practices among cattle farms and people at risk.     Quasinormal modes of black holes in f(T) gravity

    We calculate the quasinormal modes (QNM) frequencies of a test massless scalar field and an electromagnetic field around static black holes in f(T)f(T) gravity. Focusing on quadratic f(T)f(T) modifications, which is a good approximation for every realistic f(T)f(T) theory, we first extract the spherically symmetric solutions using the perturbative method, imposing two ansa¨\ddot{\text{a}}tze for the metric functions, which suitably quantify the deviation from the Schwarzschild solution. Moreover, we extract the effective potential, and then calculate the QNM frequency of the obtained solutions. Firstly, we numerically solve the Schro¨\ddot{\text{o}}dinger-like equation using the discretization method, and we extract the frequency and the time evolution of the dominant mode applying the function fit method. Secondly, we perform a semi-analytical calculation by applying the WKB method with the Pade approximation. We show that the results for f(T)f(T) gravity are different compared to General Relativity, and in particular we obtain a different slope and period of the field decay behavior for different model parameter values. Hence, under the light of gravitational-wave observations of increasing accuracy from binary systems, the whole analysis could be used as an additional tool to test General Relativity and examine whether torsional gravitational modifications are possible.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figure

    This paper investigates the effects of measurement system variability arising from evaluations of process capabilities. In this work, relationships between true process capability indices, Cp,True and Cpm,True, and their corresponding observed indices, Cp,Obs and Cpm,Obs, are developed depending on the levels of type I and II errors. Moreover, the method for adjusting control chart limits used to monitor the process is proposed based on measurement system variability. An industrial case study is used to highlight the findings of this investigation and to discuss the adjustment levels that should be conducted depending on the values of type I and type II errors

    Regulatory T cells enhance Th17 migration in psoriatic arthritis which is reversed by anti-TNF

    Regulatory T cells (Treg) prevent the migration of effector T cells toward sites of inflammation, thereby limiting disease progression. We investigated this aspect of Treg function using psoriatic arthritis (PsA) as an exemplar of chronic inflammation. Patients with PsA had an increased Th17:Treg ratio which was reversed by anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) therapy. Utilizing an in vitro migration assay, Treg from patients with PsA treated with conventional therapy paradoxically boosted CCR6(+) effector T-cell (a surrogate for Th17) migration toward CCL20. In contrast, Treg from patients with PsA treated with anti-TNF suppressed CCL20-driven effector T-cell migration. The boosting effect of TNF blockade upon Treg suppression of migration was accompanied by increased effector T-cell CCL20 production and enhanced interaction between Treg and effector T cells. This study provides mechanistic insight into Treg modulation of effector T-cell migration in patients with chronic inflammation and how this can be targeted by therapy

    Spin-current vortices in current-perpendicular-to-plane nanoconstricted spin-valves

    The charge and spin diffusion equations taking into account spin-flip and spin-transfer torque were numerically solved using a finite element method in complex non-collinear geometry with strongly inhomogeneous current flow. As an illustration, spin-dependent transport through a non-magnetic nanoconstriction separating two magnetic layers was investigated. Unexpected results such as vortices of spin-currents in the vicinity of the nanoconstriction were obtained. The angular variations of magnetoresistance and spin-transfer torque are strongly influenced by the structure geometry.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure

    Dark energy constraints from cosmic shear power spectra: impact of intrinsic alignments on photometric redshift requirements

    Cosmic shear constrains cosmology by exploiting the apparent alignments of pairs of galaxies due to gravitational lensing by intervening mass clumps. However galaxies may become (intrinsically) aligned with each other, and with nearby mass clumps, during their formation. This effect needs to be disentangled from the cosmic shear signal to place constraints on cosmology. We use the linear intrinsic alignment model as a base and compare it to an alternative model and data. If intrinsic alignments are ignored then the dark energy equation of state is biased by ~50 per cent. We examine how the number of tomographic redshift bins affects uncertainties on cosmological parameters and find that when intrinsic alignments are included two or more times as many bins are required to obtain 80 per cent of the available information. We investigate how the degradation in the dark energy figure of merit depends on the photometric redshift scatter. Previous studies have shown that lensing does not place stringent requirements on the photometric redshift uncertainty, so long as the uncertainty is well known. However, if intrinsic alignments are included the requirements become a factor of three tighter. These results are quite insensitive to the fraction of catastrophic outliers, assuming that this fraction is well known. We show the effect of uncertainties in photometric redshift bias and scatter. Finally we quantify how priors on the intrinsic alignment model would improve dark energy constraints.Comment: 14 pages and 9 figures.
