    Get PDF

Induction machines are one of the most widely used electric machines on many industrial and transportation applications. It is, therefore, important to have a facility to control these machines for the wide range of applications. On the other hand, it is possible to control DC machines with much simpler control schemes, but their technical drawbacks do not make them the preferable choice for the industry nowadays. Many control strategies have been developed for the speed and torque control of induction machines and more research is still ongoing using more modern techniques, such as “fuzzy logic” and “neural networks”. One of the most widely used control techniques is the “field-oriented control”, which is the topic of this thesis. With the parameters of a real induction machine, we implemented a control scheme based on the field-oriented control in the Simulink software. Various scenarios were applied to the controller in order to study its functioning and possible improvements. Furthermore, a speed estimation part was implemented for a sensorless control of the machine

The international law gaze: Marshall Island v United Kingdom

The International Court of Justice recently bowed to nuclear weapons States and disappointed the rest of the international community. Forty-two years after the Court’s astonishing decision in declaring the dispute on nuclear tests between New Zealand and France terminated (Nuclear Test Case (New Zealand v. France), [1974] I.C.J. Rep. 458, at [54]), a new chapter on the reluctance of the Court to deal with nuclear weapons took place in its judgment of 5 October 2016 on Preliminary Objections in Obligations Concerning Negotiations Relating to Cessation of the Nuclear Arms Race and to Nuclear Disarmament (Marshall Islands v United Kingdom). There, the Court declared that it lacked jurisdiction, since there was no dispute between the parties. (Marshall Islands v UK, at [59])

For the companies engaged in the construction of road infrastructure, is of vital importance that has good planning processes, in order to not cause cost overruns for projects that can generate economic viability and social. Therefore, it is necessary to technical, economic, social analysis, such as the identification of risks for each of these factors occur before execution and start-up of any project. The purpose of this article is to analyze the factors that were not taken into account at the planning stage of a road project, located Kennedy Town; where after the initiation of the construction, is necessitated a change in the variables of design by the incorporation of new public transportation routes. These changes resulted in some cost overruns in the initial budget, where they let themselves perceive significant economic resources by the contractor. These losses were generated by lack of communication between entities, not conducting a risk analysis of the project in the area of influence as a poor planning. Analysed each of the variables that underwent change in the designs, in order to obtain a quantification and classification using the Mosler method; highlighting that to the reprocesses generated as superior to the pre investment stages, the greater the costs of improvement and less will be received earnings

    TropeTwist: Trope-based Narrative Structure Generation

Games are complex, multi-faceted systems that share common elements and underlying narratives, such as the conflict between a hero and a big bad enemy or pursuing some goal that requires overcoming challenges. However, identifying and describing these elements together is non-trivial as they might differ in certain properties and how players might encounter the narratives. Likewise, generating narratives also pose difficulties when encoding, interpreting, analyzing, and evaluating them. To address this, we present TropeTwist, a trope-based system that can describe narrative structures in games in a more abstract and generic level, allowing the definition of games' narrative structures and their generation using interconnected tropes, called narrative graphs. To demonstrate the system, we represent the narrative structure of three different games. We use MAP-Elites to generate and evaluate novel quality-diverse narrative graphs encoded as graph grammars, using these three hand-made narrative structures as targets. Both hand-made and generated narrative graphs are evaluated based on their coherence and interestingness, which are improved through evolution.Comment: submitted, 9 page

Cooperation or Coordination of Underwater Glider Networks? An Assessment from Observing System Simulation Experiments in the Ligurian Sea

Abstract The coordinated and cooperative-unaware networking of glider fleets have been proposed to obtain a performance gain in ocean sampling over naïve collective behavior. Whether one of these implementations results in a more efficient sampling of the ocean variability remains an open question. This article aims at a performance evaluation of cooperative-unaware and coordinated networks of gliders to reduce the uncertainty in operational temperature model predictions. The evaluation is based on an observing system simulation experiment (OSSE) implemented in the northern Ligurian Sea (western Mediterranean) from 21 August to 1 September 2010. The OSSE confronts the forecast skills obtained by the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) when assimilating data gathered from a cooperative and unaware network of three gliders with the prediction skill obtained when data comes from a coordinated configuration. An asynchronous formulation of the ensemble Kalman filter with a 48-h window is used to assimilate simulated temperature observations. Optimum sampling strategies of the glider networks, based on a pattern search optimization algorithm, are computed for each 48-h forecasting period using a covariance integrated in time and in the vertical direction to reduce the dimensionality of the problem and to enable a rapid resolution. Perturbations of the depth-averaged current field in glider motions are neglected. Results indicate a better performance of the coordinated network configuration due to an enhanced capacity to capture an eddy structure that is responsible for the largest forecast error in the experimental domain
