    SARS-CoV-2 RBD protein enhances the oncolytic activity of the vesicular stomatitis virus

    Despite recent advances in the research on oncolytic viruses (OVs), a better understanding of how to enhance their replication is key to improving their therapeutic index. Understanding viral replication is important to improve treatment outcomes based on enhanced viral spreading within the tumor milieu. The VSV-Δ51 oncolytic virus has been widely used as an anticancer agent with a high selectivity profile. In this study, we examined the role of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein receptor-binding domain (RBD) in enhancing VSV-Δ51 viral production and oncolytic activity. To test this hypothesis, we first generated a novel VSV-Δ51 mutant that encoded the SARS-COV-2 RBD and compared viral spreading and viral yield between VSV-Δ51-RBD and VSV-Δ51 in vitro. Using the viral plaque assay, we demonstrated that the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 RBD in the VSV-Δ51 genome is associated with a significantly larger viral plaque surface area and significantly higher virus titers. Subsequently, using an ATP release-based assay, we demonstrated that the SARS-CoV-2 RBD could enhance VSV-Δ51 oncolytic activity in vitro. This observation was further supported using the B16F10 tumor model.     COVID-19 first lockdown as a window into language acquisition: Associations between caregiver-child activities and vocabulary gains

    The COVID-19 pandemic, and the resulting closure of daycare centers worldwide, led to unprecedented changes in children’s learning environments. This period of increased time at home with caregivers, with limited access to external sources (e.g., daycares) provides a unique opportunity to examine the associations between the caregiver-child activities and children’s language development. The vocabularies of 1742 children aged8-36 months across 13 countries and 12 languages were evaluated at the beginning and end of the first lockdown period in their respective countries(from March to September 2020). Children who had less passive screen exposure and whose caregivers read more to them showed larger gains in vocabulary development during lockdown, after controlling for SES and other caregiver-child activities. Children also gained more words than expected (based on normative data) during lockdown; either caregivers were more aware of their child’s development or vocabulary development benefited from intense caregiver-child interaction during lockdown

    Iterative Prototyping of Aircraft Tire Wear Measurement using Laser Profilometer

    Today’s aircraft are equipped with multiple sensors, which monitor the integrity of aircraft systems and support predictive maintenance to increase aircraft operability and safety. Although the tires are only functional in a small time frame during flight, tire failures can have a huge operational impact on both the aircraft and airport. The Airbus Global University Partnership Program (AGUPP) has the objective and vision to foster relationships between Airbus and partner universities. One of the axes clearly identified within AGUPP is providing universities and students access to the means and facilities within Airbus. Following the AGUPP in 2017 call Delft University of Technology pitched the idea to a determine tire wear using a laser profilometer to Airbus. The idea was accepted, and for the project access to Airbus test facilities were granted with a tight time schedule and technical constraints. Having strict deadlines and short time periods where test facilities would be available meant that an iterative test development process was required to stay on schedule. The developed laser profilometer to measure main landing gear tire wear needed to be tested before being integrated into the Airbus A350 flight test aircraft and the Airbus Test Rig for Aircraft Tyres (TeraTyre) facility. The technical constraints set by Airbus was that the profilometer system should be stand-alone and not interfere or damage test facilities. These two technical constraints influenced the design and implementation of the laser profilometer system. This paper will provide a development overview of the laser profilometer system. Furthermore, preliminary results of the laser profilometer data which was gathered during ground tests will be presented.Structural Integrity & Composite

    Young children's screen time during the first COVID-19 lockdown in 12 countries.

    Older children with online schooling requirements, unsurprisingly, were reported to have increased screen time during the first COVID-19 lockdown in many countries. Here, we ask whether younger children with no similar online schooling requirements also had increased screen time during lockdown. We examined children’s screen time during the first COVID-19 lockdown in a large cohort (n = 2209) of 8-to-36-month-olds sampled from 15 labs across 12 countries. Caregivers reported that toddlers with no online schooling requirements were exposed to more screen time during lockdown than before lockdown. While this was exacerbated for countries with longer lockdowns, there was no evidence that the increase in screen time during lockdown was associated with socio-demographic variables, such as child age and socio-economic status (SES). However, screen time during lockdown was negatively associated with SES and positively associated with child age, caregiver screen time, and attitudes towards children’s screen time. The results highlight the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on young children’s screen time

    Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) and allergic asthma are caused by an IgE-mediated inflammatory reaction. Probiotics may exert anti-inflammatory and immune-modulatory activity. Thus, this study aimed at investigating whether a Bifidobacteria mixture could be able to relieve nasal symptoms, and affect quality of life (QoL) in children with AR and intermittent asthma due to Parietaria allergy. Materials and methods: The present study was conducted as placebo-controlled, double-blinded, and randomized. Globally, 40 children (18 males; mean age 9 ± 2.2 years) were enrolled. They were treated with probiotics or placebo: 1 sachet/day for 4 weeks. AR symptoms, and QoL were assessed at baseline and after treatment. Use of rescue medications, such as cetirizine syrup and salbutamol spray, was also permitted and recorded. Results: Children treated with probiotic mixture achieved a significant improvement of symptoms (p < 0.005), and QoL ((p < 0.001). Placebo group had worsening of symptoms (p < 0.005) and QoL (p < 0.001). The use of rescue medications was overlapping in the two groups. The intergroup analysis showed that probiotic mixture was significantly superior than placebo for all parameters. Conclusions: The current study demonstrated that a Bifidobacteria mixture was able of significantly improving AR symptoms and QoL in children with pollen-induced AR and intermittent asthma.
