Rethinking Lexical Cohexion: a case study of collocation through formal and conceptual integration in Media political discourse

    Get PDF
This article contends that the collocation of words in a given textual situation is closely linked to the establishment of mental spaces and to the construction of mental models which are generated online as information is received and discourse is interpreted and processed (Fauconnier 1994, Fauconnier and Turner 2002). This connects with aspects of Hoey's theory of priming (2005), where collocation is seen as a textual cohesive phenomenon governed by the text producers' choice s of word combinations and by the text receivers' prospects of re-usage. The analysis of data from a small corpus of poli tic al discourse in the media supports the conceptual approach to collocation, and suggests considering this lexico-semantic cohesive function of words a cognitive property of linguistic expressions

This study is a text analysis of Muriel Spark's The Ballad of Peckham Rye. It focuses on the use the author makes of two different text types: the ballad and the novel and their corresponding types of language and structures. The essay attempts to show how a highly complex set of linguistic resources are combined and activated by the author to obtain the greatest informativity at the lowest narrative expense

In the third chaprer of their book More than Cool Reason (1989). Lakoff and Turner claim that, given a previous derailed reading of a text that makes use of metaphorical expressions, it is possible to derive a second metaphorical reading based on the global meaning of the text, independent of its particular linguistic expressions. Their aim is to demonstrate that metaphors are nor "a matter of words", bur that they are conceptual. The present article does not question the conceptual nature of metaphors, but maintains that interpretations are never free from words. A text consists of multiple components: structural, semantic, cognitive, and pragmatic, which are interdependent, interactive, and mutually influent. Al1 these components play an active pan in the construction of the textual macro structure and in the process of interpretation. The article revises Lakoff and Turner's analysis of a poem by William Carlos William and shows that al1 the global metaphorical interpretations which are proposed by the authors are based on micro structural features implicitly or explicitly contained in the expression of the poem.

Aim. To examine facial expression recognition abilities and their possible impairment in Parkinson’s disease. Development. First, we review the studies on this topic which have not found entirely similar results. Second, we analyze the factors that may explain these discrepancies and, in particular, as third objective, we consider the relationship between emotional recognition problems and cognitive impairment associated with the disease. Finally, we propose alternatives strategies for the development of studies that could clarify the state of these abilities in Parkinson’s disease. Conclusions. Most studies suggest deficits in facial expression recognition, especially in those with negative emotional content. However, it is possible that these alterations are related to those that also appear in the course of the disease in other perceptual and executive processes. To advance in this issue, we consider necessary to design emotional recognition studies implicating differentially the executive or visuospatial processes, and/or contrasting cognitive abilities with facial expressions and non emotional stimuli. The precision of the status of these abilities, as well as increase our knowledge of the functional consequences of the characteristic brain damage in the disease, may indicate if we should pay special attention in their rehabilitation inside the programs implementedProyecto ref. Digital competence is one of the seven key skills that any citizen must develop by the end of basic education. For their part, future teachers are the essential agents who will be responsible for developing that competence in future generations, so have a high level of digital competence has become a necessary aspect in the 21st society. In this line, the present research aims to analyze the scientific production with the greatest impact on the digital competence of the future teacher in the Scopus database. For this purpose, ten research variables have been considered: year of publication, source titles, authors, institutions, countries, document types, publication format, areas of knowledge and most cited articles. On the one hand, the results projected a research line that is booming. On the other hand, although the topic has been studied internationally, Spain is the country that has produced most research in this line, as well as its different institutions of Higher EducationLa competencia digital es una de las siete habilidades clave que cualquier ciudadano debe desarrollar al terminar la educación básica.

Variability of the stomata among 'Albariño' (Vitis vinifera L.) clones and its relationship with susceptibility to downy mildew

    Get PDF
In grapevines the stomata are located on the abaxial epidermis of the leaves, arranged in no specific order. As in other plants, they regulate the communication between the internal tissues and the external atmosphere, playing a critical role in both photosynthesis and transpiration processes. Moreover, stomata are the main entrance for pathogens such as Plasmopara viticola (Berk & Curt.)Berl. & de Toni, the causal agent of downy mildew, one of the most widespread fungal diseases of grapevines. Due to this and the fact that downy mildew causes large losses in yield and quality of grapes, there is a great interest to determine the causes of the different degree of susceptibility to this pathogen. Some authors have searched for anatomical features that might be related to the penetration and development of P. viticola in the mesophyll of grapevine leaves, such as the density of leaf hairs (KORTEKAMP and ZYPRIAN, 1999) or the ultrastructure of stomata (JÜRGES et al. 2009). Other authors have examined the differences concerning the number of stomata in different grapevine cultivars (DÜRING 1980, PALLIOTTI et al. 2000, BEN SALEM-FNAYOU et al. 2005), but none had evaluated the differences for this aspect between clones of the same cultivar. Recently some authors have found a strong correlation between the number and size of stomata and the susceptibility to downy mildew (LU et al. 2010). The aim of this work is to determine whether different clones of 'Albariño' differ in terms of their number and size of stomata and its possible relation with the different susceptibility to P. viticola of these same clones.Financial support from the Xunta de Galicia Research Projects (07MRU024403PR).Peer reviewe
