The Variability of Seyfert 1.8 and 1.9 Galaxies at 1.6 microns
We present a study of Seyfert 1.5-2.0 galaxies observed at two epochs with
the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) at 1.6 microns. We find that unresolved
nuclear emission from 9 of 14 nuclei varies at the level of 10-40% on
timescales of 0.7-14 months, depending upon the galaxy. A control sample of
Seyfert galaxies lacking unresolved sources and galaxies lacking Seyfert nuclei
show less than 3% instrumental variation in equivalent aperture measurements.
This proves that the unresolved sources are non-stellar and associated with the
central pc of active galactic nuclei. Unresolved sources in Seyfert 1.8 and 1.9
galaxies are not usually detected in HST optical surveys, however high angular
resolution infrared observations will provide a way to measure time delays in
these galaxies.Comment: accepted by ApJLetters (emulateapj latex
Characterization of the HD 17156 planetary system
AIMS : To improve the parameters of the HD 17156 system (peculiar due to the
eccentric and long orbital period of its transiting planet) and constrain the
presence of stellar companions.
METHODS : Photometric data were acquired for 4 transits, and high precision
radial velocity measurements were simultaneously acquired with SARG@TNG for one
transit. The template spectra of HD 17156 was used to derive effective
temperature, gravity, and metallicity. A fit of the photometric and
spectroscopic data was performed to measure the stellar and planetary radii,
and the spin-orbit alignment. Planet orbital elements and ephemeris were
derived from the fit. Near infrared adaptive optic images was acquired with
ADOPT@TNG.
RESULTS: We have found that the star has a radius of R_S = 1.43+/-0.03 R_sun
and the planet R_P =1.02+/-0.08 R_jup. The transit ephemeris is T_c =
2454\756.73134+/-0.00020+N*21.21663+/-0.00045 BJD. The analysis of the
Rossiter-Mclaughlin effect shows that the system is spin orbit aligned with an
angle lambda = 4.8 +/- 5.3 deg. The analysis of high resolution images has not
revealed any stellar companion with projected separation between 150 and 1000
AU from HD 17156.Comment: submitted to A&
What two models may teach us about duality violations in QCD
Though the operator product expansion is applicable in the calculation of
current correlation functions in the Euclidean region, when approaching the
Minkowskian domain, violations of quark-hadron duality are expected to occur,
due to the presence of bound-state or resonance poles. In QCD finite-energy sum
rules, contour integrals in the complex energy plane down to the Minkowskian
axis have to be performed, and thus the question arises what the impact of
duality violations may be. The structure and possible relevance of duality
violations is investigated on the basis of two models: the Coulomb system and a
model for light-quark correlators which has already been studied previously. As
might yet be naively expected, duality violations are in some sense "maximal"
for zero-width bound states and they become weaker for broader resonances whose
poles lie further away from the physical axis. Furthermore, to a certain
extent, they can be suppressed by choosing appropriate weight functions in the
finite-energy sum rules. A simplified Ansatz for including effects of duality
violations in phenomenological QCD sum rule analyses is discussed as well.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures; version to appear in JHE
Gamma-Ray Burst Sequences in Hardness Ratio-Peak Energy Plane
The narrowness of the distribution of the peak energy of
spectrum of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and the unification of GRB population are
great puzzles yet to be solved. We investigate the two puzzles based on the
global spectral behaviors of different GRB population in the
plane (HR the spectral hardness ratio) with BATSE and HETE-2 observations. It
is found that long GRBs and XRFs observed by HETE-2 seem to follow the same
sequence in the plane, with the XRFs at the low end of this
sequence. The long and short GRBs observed by BATSE follow significantly
different sequences in the plane, with most of the short GRBs
having a larger hardness ratio than the long GRBs at a given .
These results indicate that the global spectral behaviors of the long GRB
sample and the XRF sample are similar, while that of short GRBs is different.
The short GRBs seem to be a unique subclass of GRBs, and they are not the
higher energy extension of the long GRBs (abridged).Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Atomic Diffusion and Mixing in Old Stars I. VLT/FLAMES-UVES Observations of Stars in NGC 6397
We present a homogeneous photometric and spectroscopic analysis of 18 stars
along the evolutionary sequence of the metal-poor globular cluster NGC 6397
([Fe/H] = -2), from the main-sequence turnoff point to red giants below the
bump. The spectroscopic stellar parameters, in particular stellar-parameter
differences between groups of stars, are in good agreement with broad-band and
Stroemgren photometry calibrated on the infrared-flux method. The spectroscopic
abundance analysis reveals, for the first time, systematic trends of iron
abundance with evolutionary stage. Iron is found to be 31% less abundant in the
turnoff-point stars than in the red giants. An abundance difference in lithium
is seen between the turnoff-point and warm subgiant stars. The impact of
potential systematic errors on these abundance trends (stellar parameters, the
hydrostatic and LTE approximations) is quantitatively evaluated and found not
to alter our conclusions significantly. Trends for various elements (Li, Mg,
Ca, Ti and Fe) are compared with stellar-structure models including the effects
of atomic diffusion and radiative acceleration. Such models are found to
describe the observed element-specific trends well, if extra (turbulent) mixing
just below the convection zone is introduced. It is concluded that atomic
diffusion and turbulent mixing are largely responsible for the sub-primordial
stellar lithium abundances of warm halo stars. Other consequences of atomic
diffusion in old metal-poor stars are also discussed.Comment: 20 pages (emulateapj), 11 figures, accepted for publication in Ap
A system of three transiting super-Earths in a cool dwarf star
We present the detection of three super-Earths transiting the cool star
LP415-17, monitored by K2 mission in its 13th campaign. High resolution spectra
obtained with HARPS-N/TNG showed that the star is a mid-late K dwarf. Using
spectral synthesis models we infer its effective temperature, surface gravity
and metallicity and subse- quently determined from evolutionary models a
stellar radius of 0.58 R Sun. The planets have radii of 1.8, 2.6 and 1.9 R
Earth and orbital periods of 6.34, 13.85 and 40.72 days. High resolution images
discard any significant contamination by an intervening star in the line of
sight. The orbit of the furthest planet has radius of 0.18 AU, close to the
inner edge of the habitable zone. The system is suitable to improve our
understanding of formation and dynamical evolution of super-Earth systems in
the rocky - gaseous threshold, their atmospheres, internal structure,
composition and interactions with host stars.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter
