This paper offers an approach to Kathleen Alcalá's trilogy about the Sonoran Desert, a series through which the author is able to explore and examine Porfirio Díaz's autocratic decades that eventually led to the Mexican Revolution in 1910. Alcalá uses in her novels a number of characters who belong to different racial and cultural backgrounds to emphasise the importance of Mexican mestizaje. Moreover, the author manages to create a marvellous world of magic through the three volumes of the trilogy where each group of characters corresponds to a different distinctive element of Mexican racial, cultural, religious and linguistic syncretism. Therefore, and despite the fact that each novel of the trilogy can be easily read independently, this paper will take into consideration the three volumes as a whole in order to analyse the way in which the author intermingles the characters' experiences during these tumultuous decades to highlight the importance of indigenous populations and their folklore in the conceptualisation of Mexican mestizo legacy. Get PDF
This article assesses the financial forecasts of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in their process of initial public offering (IPO). In particular, the quality of earnings forecasts is analysed and the determinants of accuracy of earning forecasts are explored. To this end, the empirical study considers all the companies listed on the Spanish Alternative Stock Market (MAB). The results show that managers of newly listed Spanish SMEs have mostly been optimistic and highly inaccurate when estimating their future earnings

Time-dependent patterns in quasivertical cylindrical binary convection

This paper reports on numerical investigations of the effect of a slight inclination a on pattern formation in a shallow vertical cylindrical cell heated from below for binary mixtures with a positive value of the Soret coefficient. By using direct numerical simulation of the three-dimensional Boussinesq equations with Soret effect in cylindrical geometry, we show that a slight inclination of the cell in the range a˜0.036rad=2° strongly influences pattern selection. The large-scale shear flow (LSSF) induced by the small tilt of gravity overcomes the squarelike arrangements observed in noninclined cylinders in the Soret regime, stratifies the fluid along the direction of inclination, and produces an enhanced separation of the two components of the mixture. The competition between shear effects and horizontal and vertical buoyancy alters significantly the dynamics observed in noninclined convection. Additional unexpected time-dependent patterns coexist with the basic LSSF. We focus on an unsual periodic state recently discovered in an experiment, the so-called superhighway convection state (SHC), in which ascending and descending regions of fluid move in opposite directions. We provide numerical confirmation that Boussinesq Navier-Stokes equations with standard boundary conditions contain the essential ingredients that allow for the existence of such a state. Also, we obtain a persistent heteroclinic structure where regular oscillations between a SHC pattern and a state of nearly stationary longitudinal rolls take place. We characterize numerically these time-dependent patterns and investigate the dynamics around the threshold of convection.Postprint (author's final draft

La accesibilidad como la necesidad más percibida por las personas con parálisis cerebral en proceso de envejecimiento

    Get PDF
In this study the needs presented by people with cerebral palsy (CP) in the aging process are collected. A total of 260 people with CP from different communities filled in a semistructured interview that collects information about how people with CP perceive their own aging, what their needs are and how those are met. Regarding the concerns raised, the most chosen responses, of a total of 640, were concerns about the existence of barriers, mainly architectural barriers, access to transportation and social barriers. Accessibility becomes an indispensable factor on the equality of opportunity. This analysis allows designing proposals to address these needs in the aging population with PC, since accessibility is a prerequisite for the participation in the society and the economy. Design for everybody is an obligation that derives from the right to universal accessibility. In order to that public awareness about the importance of making an accessible world able to include the great human diversity is required

Optimization and Validation of HS-GC/MS Method for the Controlled Release Study of Microencapsulated Specific Bioattractants for Target-Plaguicide Production

Insect plagues are a problem often hard to solve due to the harmful effects caused by the pesticides used to combat them. Consequently, the pesticide market is increasingly trying to develop new technologies to prevent the unwanted effects that common plague treatments usually bring with them. In this work, four specific bioattractants of Musca domestica, extracted from fungi (β-ocimene, phenol, p-cresol, and indole) were microencapsulated with β-cyclodextrin in order to produce an economically and environmentally sustainable bait containing biocides in the near future. Cyclodextrins will retain these volatile compounds until their use by the consumer when the product comes into contact with water. Then, the bioattractants will be released in the medium in a controlled manner. An analytical methodology based on headspace extraction coupled to gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (HS-GC/MS) has been developed and validated following Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and European Commission Directorate General for Health and Food Safety guidelines for the bioattractants controlled release study from the microencapsulated product. The analytical method has been shown to be accurate and precise and has the sensitivity required for controlled release studies of the four bioattractants analyzed. The release of the bioattractants from microencapsulated products achieved the “plateau” after 3 h in all cases. This research was funded by University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) (project GIU19/068)

A characterization of dual quermassintegrals and the roots of dual steiner polynomials

    Get PDF
For any IRI\subset\mathbb{R} finite with 0I0\in I, we provide a characterization of those tuples (ωi)iI(\omega_i)_{i\in I} of positive numbers which are dual querma\ss integrals of two star bodies. It turns out that this problem is related to the moment problem. Based on this relation we also get new inequalities for the dual querma\ss integrals. Moreover, the above characterization will be the key tool in order to investigate structural properties of the set of roots of dual Steiner polynomials of star bodies
