Bounds on the electromagnetic interactions of excited spin-3/2 leptons

    Get PDF
We discuss possible deviations from QED produced by a virtual excited spin-3/2 lepton in the reaction e+e2γe^+e^- \longrightarrow 2\gamma. Data recorded by the OPAL Collaboration at a c.m. energy s=183GeV\sqrt{s} = 183 GeV are used to establish bounds on the nonstandard-lepton mass and coupling strengths.Comment: Latex, 5 pages, 7 ps figures. Pair production of the heavy leptons in future high energy linear e^{+}e^{-} colliders

The littlest Higgs model with T-parity predicts the existence of the T-odd particles, which can only be produced in pair. We consider pair production of the T-odd leptons in future high energy linear e+ee^{+}e^{-} collider (ILCILC). Our numerical results show that, as long as the T-odd leptons are not too heavy, they can be copiously produced and their possible signals might be detected via the processes e+eLˉiLje^{+}e^{-}\to \bar{L}_{i}L_{j} in future ILCILC experiments.Comment: Discussions added, typos and references correcte

UniHI 7: an enhanced database for retrieval and interactive analysis of human molecular interaction networks.

    Get PDF
Unified Human Interactome (UniHI) (http://www.unihi.org) is a database for retrieval, analysis and visualization of human molecular interaction networks. Its primary aim is to provide a comprehensive and easy-to-use platform for network-based investigations to a wide community of researchers in biology and medicine. Here, we describe a major update (version 7) of the database previously featured in NAR Database Issue. UniHI 7 currently includes almost 350,000 molecular interactions between genes, proteins and drugs, as well as numerous other types of data such as gene expression and functional annotation. Multiple options for interactive filtering and highlighting of proteins can be employed to obtain more reliable and specific network structures. Expression and other genomic data can be uploaded by the user to examine local network structures. Additional built-in tools enable ready identification of known drug targets, as well as of biological processes, phenotypes and pathways enriched with network proteins. A distinctive feature of UniHI 7 is its user-friendly interface designed to be utilized in an intuitive manner, enabling researchers less acquainted with network analysis to perform state-of-the-art network-based investigations

Methanol Electro-Oxidation on Carbon-Supported PtRu Nanowires

    Get PDF
One of the key objectives in fuel cell technology is to improve the alcohol oxidation efficiency of Pt-based catalysts. A series of carbon-supported PtRu nanowires with different concentrations of Pt and Ru were prepared for application in methanol oxidation in acid media. The physicochemical properties and electrocatalytic activity of these catalysts during methanol oxidation are function on their structure, morphology and composition. A Pt60Ru40/C catalyst shows the best behaviour towards methanol electro-oxidation allowing decrease the onset potential approximately 0.2 V respect to others PtRu/C synthesised nanowires. The structural modification of Pt by Ru and synergetic character of RuPt are main factors that could contribute to reduction of energy necessary for electro-oxidation process. The Pt and PtRu nanowires have different sizes and distribution on the substrate. The average crystallite sizes, found by XRD, are in the 4.6–5.9 nm range and the lattice parameter is between 0.3903–0.3908 nm. Small differences with the values of the Pt/C catalyst were found. The XPS results show a prevailing presence of metallic Pt and Ru4+ species. The authors thank to CNPq (grants: 304419/2015-0, 402243/2012-9, 400443/2013-9, 407274/2013-8 and 310282/2013-6), CAPES and FAPITEC for the scholarships and financial support

Te covered Si(001): a variable surface reconstruction

    Get PDF
At a given temperature, clean and adatom covered silicon surfaces usually exhibit well-defined reconstruction patterns. Our finite temperature ab-initio molecular dynamics calculations show that the tellurium covered Si(001) surface is an exception. Soft longitudinal modes of surface phonons due to the strongly anharmonic potential of the bridged tellurium atoms prevent the reconstruction structure from attaining any permanent, two dimensional periodic geometry. This explains why experiments attempting to find a definite model for the reconstruction have reached conflicting conclusions.Comment: 4 pages, 3 gif figure

Scarabaeoidea (Insecta : Coleoptera) in the Brazilian Cerrado : current state of knowledge

    Get PDF
Beetles belonging to the superfamily Scarabaeoidea occupy different habitats, present feeding habits diversifi ed, play an important ecological role and several species have agricultural importance. However, studies with this group in the Brazilian Cerrado are scarce. In this review we carried out a survey of scientifi c articles published in the past 30 years concerning Scarabaeoidea in the Cerrado. Were found 64 studies in nine Brazilian states. The studies focused on four main topics: pest species, bioecology, biodiversity and ecological importance, techniques and methodologies for collecting Scarabaeoidea. The results of this review indicate that few studies have been conducted with Scarabaeoidea in the Cerrado in recent decades compared to the importance and diversity of this group of insects

Antioxidant and antimicrobial films based on brewers spent grain arabinoxylans, nanocellulose and feruloylated compounds for active packaging

    Get PDF
In this study, brewers spent grain (BSG) arabinoxylans-based nanocomposite films were prepared by solvent casting of arabinoxylans (AX) suspensions containing different amounts of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 75% mass fraction). The obtained nanocomposite films were homogeneous and presented thermal stability up to 230 °C and good mechanical properties (Young's modulus up to 7.5 GPa). Additionally, the films with 50% NFC were loaded with ferulic acid or feruloylated arabinoxylo-oligosaccharides enriched fraction from BSG (75 mg per g of film). This combination enhanced the UV–Vis barrier properties and imparted additional functionalities to the films, namely (i) antioxidant activity up to 90% (DPPH scavenging activity), (ii) antibacterial activity against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria, and (iii) antifungal activity towards the polymorphic fungus Candida albicans. Therefore, these fully biobased nanocomposite films show potential for application as active food packaging systems.publishe
