Ageing is accompanied by physical changes, both at the physiological and appearance levels. The way people perceive these changes have important consequences on general health and quality of life (QoL). This study analysed the relationship between sociodemographic variables, psychological variables, use of antiageing cosmetic products/aesthetic treatments, and QoL.Le vieillissement s'accompagne de changements physiques, tant au niveau physiologique qu’au niveau de l'apparence. This study was conducted at the Psychology Research Centre (PSI/01662), School of Psychology, University of Minho, supported by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through the Portuguese State Budget (Ref.: UIDB/PSI/01662/2020

In Vitro Evaluation of the Photoreactivity and Phototoxicity of Natural Polyphenol Antioxidants

Polyphenols are a large family of natural compounds widely used in cosmetic products due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory beneficial properties and their ability to prevent UV radiation-induced oxidative stress. Since these compounds present chromophores and are applied directly to the skin, they can react with sunlight and exert phototoxic effects. The available scientific information on the phototoxic potential of these natural compounds is scarce, and thus the aim of this study was to evaluate the photoreactivity and phototoxicity of five phenolic antioxidants with documented use in cosmetic products. A standard ROS assay was validated and applied to screen the photoreactivity of the natural phenolic antioxidants caffeic acid, ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), and rutin. The phototoxicity potential was determined by using a human keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT), based on the 3T3 Neutral Red Uptake phototoxicity test. Although all studied phenolic antioxidants absorbed UV/Vis radiation in the range of 290 to 700 nm, only DOPAC was able to generate singlet oxygen. The generation of reactive oxygen species is an early-stage chemical reaction as part of the phototoxicity mechanism. Yet, none of the studied compounds decreased the viability of keratinocytes after irradiation, leading to the conclusion that they do not have phototoxic potential. The data obtained with this work suggests that these compounds are safe when incorporated in cosmetic products. This work is financed by national funds from FCT-Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., in the scope of the project UIDP/04378/2020, UIDB/04378/2020 of the Research Unit on Applied Molecular Biosciences-UCIBIO and the project LA/P/0140/2020 of the Associate Laboratory Institute for Health and Bioeconomy-i4HB and UIDB/00081/2020 grant funded by FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Cognitive processes and math performance : a study with children at third grade of basic education

    Get PDF
The present study aims to examine the relationship between cognitive factors and mathematical achievement in primary education. Participants were 103 Portuguese third grade students, aged 8 and 9. All participants completed a battery for working memory (WMTB-C), a test of general intelligence (Raven's Progressive Color Matrices), a selective attention test (d2), and mathematical exercises (arithmetic story problems and measurement skills). Data suggested significant correlations between math performance, executive, visuo- spatial sketchpad and g factor. Our findings suggest the importance of the cognitive factors in two mathematical domains considered. In consonance with the research in this area, we conclude that working memory (WM) assumes an important role in different math curricular achievements

Three months-old’ preferences for biological motion configuration and its subsequent decline

To perceive, identify and understand the action of others, it is essential to perceptually organize individual and local moving body parts (such as limbs) into the whole configuration of a human body in action. Configural processing—processing the relations among features or parts of a stimulus—is a fundamental ability in the perception of several important social stimuli, such as faces or biological motion. Despite this, we know very little about how human infants develop the ability to perceive and prefer configural relations in biological motion. We present two preferential looking experiments (one cross-sectional and one longitudinal) measuring infants’ preferential attention between a coherent motion configuration of a person walking vs. a scrambled point-light walker (i.e., a stimulus in which all configural relations were removed, thus, in which the perception of a person is impossible). We found that three-month-old infants prefer a coherent point-light walker in relation to a scrambled display, but both five- and seven-month-old infants do not show any preference. We discuss our findings in terms of the different perceptual, attentional, motor, and brain processes available at each age group, and how they dynamically interact with selective attention toward the coherent and socially relevant motion of a person walking during our first year of life.ICL was supported by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (PD/BD/105966/2014), and AFP by the research grants PTDC/PSI-GER/2463/2021, PTDC/MHC-PCN/1530/2014, and IF/00217/2013. Patterned piezoelectric scaffolds for osteogenic differentiation

    Get PDF
The morphological clues of scaffolds can determine cell behavior and, therefore, the patterning of electroactive polymers can be a suitable strategy for bone tissue engineering. In this way, this work reports on the influence of poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) electroactive micropatterned scaffolds on the proliferation and differentiation of bone cells. For that, micropatterned P(VDF-TrFE) scaffolds were produced by lithography in the form of arrays of lines and hexagons and then tested for cell proliferation and differentiation of pre-osteoblast cell line. Results show that more anisotropic surface microstructures promote bone differentiation without the need of further biochemical stimulation. Thus, the combination of specific patterns with the inherent electroactivity of materials provides a promising platform for bone regeneration. This work was supported by national funds through the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) and by ERDF through COMPETE2020—Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalização (POCI) in the framework of the Strategic Programs UID/FIS/04650/2020 and UIDB/04436/2020 and projects PTDC/EMD-EMD/28159/2017 and PTDC/BTM-MAT/28237/2017. Antimicrobial activity of fruit packages coated with nanomaterials based in metal-ions zeolites

    Get PDF
The transport and storage of fruits is frequently compromised by microbial contaminations, especially during the delivery of these perishable foods to the public. The development of smart packages against microbial contaminations is an alternative of great interest to help controlling post-harvest diseases. The incorporation of nanomaterials, such as metal-ions zeolites with antimicrobial properties, in the semi-rigid alveolar structure for fruits transport/storage could allow the preservation of fruit with safety and quality, by inhibiting/reducing the growth of microrganisms. In this work, metal-ions zeolite nanomaterials were incorporated on the packaging material and the antibacterial activity was tested against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The package material exhibited good antimicrobial activity against the two bacteria (Figure 1), which are promising results for industrial application.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Expressions of the Individual’s behavior in Digital Network: Education in a Technological Society

The article assumes that the behavior of expressions of individuals is related to the digital network, in which forms of human relationships are being forged in order to understand differently the process of teaching and learning with autonomy that can generate a new way of thinking, creating values and representations. This may resize behaviors in individuals and affect the perception of the subject in relation to themselves and others. New technologies, consumption and media influence shape and build the contemporary psyche. Thus, it becomes essential to consider the force with which the new messaging serving media plays in order to socialize and in the individual subjectivity. In this context, new challenges for education that allow the birth of studies and concepts, in order to explain this new reality and to contribute to the art of teaching and learning. One of these, therefore, will be part of this work, which is called Informational Normosis or Informatosis
