This paper attempts to identify the changes which occurred in the treatment of sport in the Portuguese sports press. Since 1970 there is a comparative analysis among the leading publications dealing the sport. Initially, only the sports paper A Bola, and Record and, later, O Jogo. These three newspapers are now the benchmark in sports journalism and over the years have been growing and evolving, either through graphic innovations in sport or treatment of either the football or other sports too. The main objectives of this work are realize what or which sports where lies a more prominent by the Portuguese sports papers as well as the teams that also deserve greater emphasis on the headlines. To this it was chosen an age of analysis. Thus, the period chosen for analysis was the month of April that also provides and requires the presence of football in the spotlight. Portugal is a major consumer of football and therefore at a time when they begin to reckon the champions, in April, there is an even greater need to spread the sport on the paper covers. This time, one of the main conclusions drawn in this work, it is the much greater presence of football as 'beautiful game'. Football exceeds any sport with regard to the presence it has on the covers of newspapers. Another important conclusion is also the amount of news for the three big teams of the I Liga soccer. The SL Benfica, Sporting CP and FC Porto are clearly teams that stand out on the front pages of the sports newspapers, earning then a significant advantage over other clubs of Division I and the other, as well as international

Tumor de Colisão de Odd – Dermatofibroma e Nevo

A cutaneous collision or contiguous tumor occurs when two or more cutaneous tumors coexist in a single lesion. These tumors usually have misleading clinical and histological presentations, making them a diagnostic challenge. Although several different combinations of collisions have been described we report an unusual case of a cutaneous collision tumour on the back of the patient involving an intradermal naevus and a dermatofibroma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time such combination is reported.

Pear (Pyrus communis L.) is a fruit of great interest because their consumption offers nutritional as well as medicinal advantages [1]. The most well-known and studied properties associated with pears are antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties [2] these are associated with the presence of phenolic compounds, mainly in the peels but also, in smaller amounts, in its mesocarp (pulp) [3]. In this work, an Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography combined with Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC-ToF-MS) method was optimized and validated for the determination of individual phenolics in the pulp and by-products of fruits. The main phenolic compounds found in the studied regional pear cultivars (6 cultivars from Alcobaça region) were catechin, epicatechin, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, and vanillic acid. The pear by-products (peels and seeds) presented higher phenolic content than mesocarp, mainly peels samples. One example of this is the Carapinheira Roxa cultivar, wherein the peels had the highest concentration of chlorogenic acid (26.26 ± 0.65 g/g) and lower levels were found in the seeds (3.11 ± 0.19 g/g) and in the pulp (4.27 ± 0.03 g/g). Other very well recognized pear phenolics, were quantified in all the pear cultivars, at different levels. For example, in the peels portion, the level of epicatechin varied between 0.19 g/g in the Torres Novas cultivar and 37.30 g/g in the Lambe-os-Dedos cultivar. The studied regional pear cultivars, in particular their by-products, presented high levels of phenolic compounds, showing potential to be valorized. This study was carried out in the frame of the clabel+ project: Innovative Natural, Nutritious and Consumer Oriented “Clean Label” Foods with the reference POCI-01-0247-FEDER-046080 financed by the Competitiveness and Internationalization Thematic Operational Programme (POCI), under the COMPETE2020, PORTUGAL2020 Partnership Agreement, through the co-financing of European Regional Development Fund (FEDER). Pears (Pyrus communis L.) and apples (Malus domestica Borkh.) are two of the most popular fruits worldwide. The phenolic compounds they offer are associated with human health benefits due to their antioxidant properties. Since these fruits’ by-products are not yet fully exploited, it is important to characterize them, especially in terms of their antioxidant properties. The aim of this study was to determine the antioxidant properties of old traditional cultivars, six regional pear cultivars and five regional apple cultivars grown in the Alcobaça region (Portugal). Antioxidant capacity assays were used to evaluate the antioxidant properties. Generally, the antioxidant capacity, total phenolics content (TPC), and total flavonoids content (TFC) of fruit byproducts (both seeds and peels) were higher than the corresponding mesocarp, indicating their potential as sources of beneficial antioxidant compounds. Moreover, a UHPLC-ToF-MS method was optimized and validated in order to quantify 21 distinct phenolics in these fruit samples. The analytical method’s suitability for quantifying phenolic compounds was demonstrated by an evaluation of linearity, limit of detection, limit of quantification, precision and accuracy. This method was used to determine the phenolic composition of samples of regional (local) cultivars. The phenolics in the fruit samples with the highest concentrations were phlorizin and chlorogenic acid. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to separate distinct fruit species while emphasizing their similarities and differences. This research was funded by the clabel+ project: Innovative Natural, Nutritious and Consumer Oriented “Clean Label” Foods with the reference POCI-01-0247-FEDER-046080 financed by the Competitiveness and Internationalization Thematic Operational Programme (PO CI), under the COMPETE2020, PORTUGAL2020 Partnership Agreement, through the co-financing of European Regional Development Fund (FEDER). Background Prison sentences are a particular type of penalty that aim to reintegrate individuals into society. Nonetheless, research suggests that prison sentences have a null or a criminogenic effect on recidivism and a critical impact on inmates’ mental health, negatively interfering with their successful reintegration into society and recidivism. Prevalence rates of mental health disorders among individuals who commit crimes are high, but little is known about how incarceration perpetuates and/or worsens mental health symptoms. In the Portuguese context, no studies focused on understanding the impact of imprisonment on prisoners’ mental health. Thus, this project aims to understand incarceration’s mental health and well-being impact on male and female individuals convicted to prison, both while incarcerated and after release. Methods The study will follow a quantitative cross-sectional design of male and female individuals in prison and parole, aiming to assess different samples at different moments of the prison sentence. It will also follow a longitudinal design in a subsample of male and female individuals sentenced to prison and on parole who will be followed for one year. Discussion This study intends to have a meaningful impact on the understanding of imprisonment effects, giving important clues for developing and implementing evidence-based prevention and intervention strategies to address prisoners’ and ex-prisoners’ mental health and improve their ability to successfully reintegrate into society and reduce recidivism. This work was funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology – FCT (Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education), under the grant UIDB/05380/2020

Copyright © Ordem dos Médicos 2014Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, one of the pivotal figures of the Portuguese Modernist movement, studied painting and began his work in Paris where he arrived at the age of 19. Interestingly, Amadeo cemented strong friendships with some physicians from his time. The first was Manuel Laranjeiro, physician, poet and essayist, who has been a major influence on his choice of studying visual arts. In 1909, the painter met the dermatologist Paul Alexander and later Dr. Martins, who diagnosed him with a dermatosis, which led the painter to have to interrupt his work. Described as an eczema, which affected his face and hands, probably an allergic contact dermatitis to paints or other products that did not become clarified, with the artist's early death at age of 30 by pneumonic fever. Occupational diseases affect the practice of many professions and artists, including painters, who constitute an important risk group. Contact with several components of paints and solvents are associated with the contact sensitization. However, allergens responsible for allergic contact dermatitis change over the time according to the usage trends and products' composition.

The concept of field cancerization, described in various types of cancer, has been intensely studied in skin cancer. It can be defined as the process in which the cells in a tissue or organ are transformed, with genetic modifications, but with normal clinical and histologic features, prior to neoplastic development or coexisting with malignant cells, independently of clonality. Applying this concept to clinical practice could have potentially important implications in early diagnosis, risk stratification, primary and secondary chemoprevention, definition of resection margins, and approach to local and distance recurrences.

PIGMENTED VULVAR BASAL CELL CARCINOMA – RELEVANCE OF THE DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS IN OTHER PIGMENTED VULVAR LESIONS

Introduction: Basal cell carcinoma is the most common malignant tumors found in the human race, with an increasing incidence in recent decades. The vulva is an atypical location for this type of neoplasm, probably because the etiological factors are different from other anatomical areas. It has a non-specific and monotonous symptomatology. Case Report: A 69-year-old woman attended with a 3cm eroded plaque with small pigmented areas on the edge of the right labia majora. Histology revealed a pigmented basal cell carcinoma. The patient underwent to wide excision. After three years of follow-up there was no recurrence. Conclusion: Pigmented vulva basal cell carcinoma is a rarity. We emphasize how important is the differential diagnosis with other pigmented lesions in this area which may be neoplasm with a worst prognosis and require other kind of treatments. Periodic follow-up is required because the high rate of recurrence. KEYWORDS – Pigmentation disorders; Skin neoplasms; Vulvar neoplasms.
