Lusitanian toadfish song reflects male quality

Lusitanian toadfish males that provide parental care rely on acoustic signals (the boatwhistle) to attract females to their nest. We test the hypothesis that male quality, namely male size and condition that are relevant for parental success, is reflected in vocal activity and boatwhistle characteristics and thus advertised to females. We recorded 22 males over a week during the peak of the breeding season. Calling rate and calling effort (percentage of time spent calling) strongly reflected male condition (lipid content of somatic muscles) and to a smaller extent sonic muscle hypertrophy and larger gonads. Males in better condition (increased body lipid and relative higher liver mass) also contracted the sonic muscles at faster rate as shown by the shorter boatwhistle pulse periods. Amplitude modulation reflected the degree of sonic muscle hypertrophy. None of the measured male quality parameters were good predictors of boatwhistle duration and dominant frequency. Altogether this study strongly suggests that Lusitanian toadfish males advertise their quality to females primarily with boatwhistle calling rate and calling effort, which mainly reflect male condition. Because pulse period had low variability, consistent with the existence of a vocal central pattern generator, we suggest that males that sustain sonic muscles contraction at a very fast rate close to their physiological limit may be honestly advertising their quality (condition). Similarly, males that produce boatwhistles with higher amplitude modulation, a feature that seems dependent on sonic muscle hypertrophy, could be more attractive to females.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologiainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Persistence as a robust indicator of medication adherence-related quality and performance

Medication adherence is a priority for health systems worldwide and is widely recognised as a key component of quality of care for disease management. Adherence-related indicators were rarely explicitly included in national health policy agendas. One barrier is the lack of standardised adherence terminology and of routine measures of adherence in clinical practice. This paper discusses the possibility of developing adherence-related performance indicators highlighting the value of measuring persistence as a robust indicator of quality of care. To standardise adherence and persistence-related terminology allowing for benchmarking of adherence strategies, the European Ascertaining Barriers for Compliance (ABC) project proposed a Taxonomy of Adherence in 2012 consisting of three components: initiation, implementation, discontinuation. Persistence, which immediately precedes discontinuation, is a key element of taxonomy, which could capture adherence chronology allowing the examination of patterns of medication-taking behaviour. Advances in eHealth and Information Communication Technology (ICT) could play a major role in providing necessary structures to develop persistence indicators. We propose measuring persistence as an informative and pragmatic measure of medication-taking behaviour. Our view is to develop quality and performance indicators of persistence, which requires investing in ICT solutions enabling healthcare providers to review complete information on patients’ medication-taking patterns, as well as clinical and health outcomes

Background: Malnutrition is frequently found in hospitalized children and is associated with poor outcome. The adequate nutritional approach improves clinical evaluation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the adequacy of dietetic enteral order in hospitalized children. Methods: Twenty one children were followed from july to september 2004. The dietetic enteral orders were registered during three periods of hospitalization. Results: The children body weight was inadequate and didn´t changed during the hospitalization (day 1 = 76.4 ± 18.2%; day 2 = 76.1 ± 18.6%; day 3 = 76.7 ± 19.6%). Energy dietetic order was inadequate but protein and micronutrients were according to the recommendation. Conclusion: Clinical condition may negativelly affect the nutritional order. The multidisciplinary team should give all the efforts to meet the appropriate dietetic energy order of hospitalized children. A correta abordagem nutricional, incluindo a prescrição dietética, melhora a evolução clínica.
