    Probabilistic Kernel Support Vector Machines

    We propose a probabilistic enhancement of standard kernel Support Vector Machines for binary classification, in order to address the case when, along with given data sets, a description of uncertainty (e.g., error bounds) may be available on each datum. In the present paper, we specifically consider Gaussian distributions to model uncertainty. Thereby, our data consist of pairs (xi,Σi)(x_i,\Sigma_i), i∈{1,…,N}i\in\{1,\ldots,N\}, along with an indicator yi∈{−1,1}y_i\in\{-1,1\} to declare membership in one of two categories for each pair. These pairs may be viewed to represent the mean and covariance, respectively, of random vectors ξi\xi_i taking values in a suitable linear space (typically Rn\mathbb R^n). Thus, our setting may also be viewed as a modification of Support Vector Machines to classify distributions, albeit, at present, only Gaussian ones. We outline the formalism that allows computing suitable classifiers via a natural modification of the standard "kernel trick." The main contribution of this work is to point out a suitable kernel function for applying Support Vector techniques to the setting of uncertain data for which a detailed uncertainty description is also available (herein, "Gaussian points").Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    Bactericidal activity of extended 9-glycyl-amido-minocyclines

    The need for self-protecting polymer or alloy implants resistant to a broad spectrum of bacterial challenges led us to investigate covalent bonding of minocycline (MIN), a tetracycline derivative, to polystyrene beads and to titanium alloy foils by oligoethylene glycol spacers. 9-Hydrazino-acetyl-amido-MIN, and simpler glycylcycline derivatives, retained minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against Staphylococcus aureus comparable to MIN. However, PEG-glycyl-amido-MIN showed very low activity. Hence, we coupled 9-hydrazino-acetyl-amido-MIN to the aldehyde termini of oligoethylene glycol spacers bonded to polystyrene and titanium alloy surfaces to form acid-releasable hydrazone linkages. 9-Hydrazino-acetyl-amido-MIN was released from the monolayers more rapidly at pH 5.0 than at pH 7.4

    Physicochemical Properties and Catalytic Behavior of the Molecular Sieve SSZ-70

    SSZ-70 is synthesized using 1,3-bis(isobutyl)imidazolium, 1,3-bis(cyclohexyl)imidazolium, and 1,3-bis(cycloheptyl)imidazolium structure directing agents (SDAs), and the solids obtained are characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), ^(29)Si magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR), electron microscopy, nitrogen and hydrocarbon adsorption, and thermogravimetric analyses. The physicochemical properties of SSZ-70 show that it is a new molecular sieve that has similarities to MWW-type materials. The catalytic behavior of SSZ-70 is evaluated through the use of the constraint index (CI) test. Distinct differences in the reactivity between Al-SSZ-70 and SSZ-25 (MWW) are observed and are the consequences of the structural differences between these two molecular sieves

    Low Bone Turnover in Chronic Kidney Disease is associated with decreased VEGF-A expression and osteoblast differentiation

    Background: Low turnover bone (low bone formation rates (BFRs)) with decreased osteoblast number is common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and attributed to ‘over-suppression' of the parathyroid hormone (PTH) despite supra-physiologic levels. An alternative hypothesis is abnormal osteoblast differentiation, resulting in low BFRs due to reduced VEGF-A. Methods: We analyzed the expression of VEGF-A and mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) differentiation factors in freshly isolated bone marrow (BM) cells, and in BM cell-derived MSC in rats with different levels of BFRs and PTH (modulated by calcium and zoledronic acid). The regulators of VEGF in MSC were also determined. Results: VEGF-A expression was reduced in the BM cells from CKD vs. normal animals (p < 0.02). In BM-derived MSC from CKD, there were decreased osteoblast transcription factors and mineralization. In CKD animals, the BM VEGF-A expression was positively correlated with BFR (r = 0.80, p < 0.001). Reducing BFRs in CKD animals led to reductions in VEGF-A expression and osteoblast transcription factors regardless of the PTH level. We therefore examined other regulators of VEGF-A and found decreased expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α and the master transcription factor of antioxidants nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 in CKD animals with low PTH. Conclusion: Low BFRs in CKD are associated with a basal decrease in VEGF-A expression in BM that may be driven by altered hypoxia and oxidative stress

    Influence of polymer-pore interactions on translocation

    We investigate the influence of polymer-pore interactions on the translocation dynamics using Langevin dynamics simulations. An attractive interaction can greatly improve translocation probability. At the same time, it also increases translocation time slowly for weak attraction while exponential dependence is observed for strong attraction. For fixed driving force and chain length the histogram of translocation time has a transition from Gaussian distribution to long-tailed distribution with increasing attraction. Under a weak driving force and a strong attractive force, both the translocation time and the residence time in the pore show a non-monotonic behavior as a function of the chain length.     Effect of ovariectomy on the progression of chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorder (CKD-MBD) in female Cy/+ rats

    Male Cy/+ rats have shown a relatively consistent pattern of progressive kidney disease development that displays multiple key features of late stage chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorder (CKD-MBD), specifically the development of cortical bone porosity. However, progression of disease in female Cy/+ rats, assessed in limited studies, is more heterogeneous and to date has failed to show development of the CKD-MBD phenotype, thus limiting their use as a practical model of progressive CKD-MBD. Animal and human studies suggest that estrogen may be protective against kidney disease in addition to its established protective effect on bone. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to determine the effect of ovariectomy (OVX) on the biochemical and skeletal manifestations of CKD-MBD in Cy/+ female rats. We hypothesized that OVX would accelerate development of the biochemical and skeletal features of CKD-MBD in female Cy/+ rats, similar to those seen in male Cy/+ rats. Female Cy/+ rats underwent OVX (n = 8) or Sham (n = 8) surgery at 15 weeks of age. Blood was collected every 5 weeks post-surgery until 35 weeks of age, when the rats underwent a 4-day metabolic balance, and the tibia and final blood were collected at the time of sacrifice. OVX produced the expected changes in trabecular and cortical parameters consistent with post-menopausal disease, and negative phosphorus balance compared with Sham. However, indicators of CKD-MBD were similar between OVX and Sham (similar kidney weight, plasma blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, creatinine clearance, phosphorus, calcium, parathyroid hormone, and no cortical porosity). Contrary to our hypothesis, OVX did not produce evidence of development of the CKD-MBD phenotype in female Cy/+ rats

    Can the Federal Baldrige Survey Measure Workforce Well-being in an Academic Health Center?

    Introduction. Experts suggest health care institutions switch focusfrom measuring burnout to measuring positive organizational psychology.Concerns include burnout being a late sign of organizationaldecline. The Baldrige survey is promoted by the U.S. Departmentof Commerce to measure positive worksite conditions (e.g., workforcewellbeing of industries, including health care and education).For years, the survey has been completed by managers within organizations,but now the same survey is promoted for completion byan organization’s workforce. We tested the structure of the Baldrigesurvey when completed by an academic health care workforce. Inaddition, we tested whether the results in an academic worksite correlatewith an example metric of an organizational mission.Methods.xIn 2015, our academic health center surveyed facultyand staff with the Baldrige survey. The validity of the Baldrige wastested with confirmatory factor analyses. Within the School of Medicine,responses for the Baldrige’s concepts were correlated againsta measure of organizational outcome: graduates’ assessments ofDepartmental educational quality.Results. The structure of the Baldrige survey did not validate whenassessed by a workforce (RMSEA = 0.086; CFI = 0.829; TLI = 0.815).None of its concepts correlated with learner reported educationalquality.Conclusions. The Baldrige survey, when administered to a workforcerather than managers, did not appear to measure workforcewell-being within an academic health care center.     Waves and instability in a one-dimensional microfluidic array

    Motion in a one-dimensional (1D) microfluidic array is simulated. Water droplets, dragged by flowing oil, are arranged in a single row, and due to their hydrodynamic interactions spacing between these droplets oscillates with a wave-like motion that is longitudinal or transverse. The simulation yields wave spectra that agree well with experiment. The wave-like motion has an instability which is confirmed to arise from nonlinearities in the interaction potential. The instability's growth is spatially localized. By selecting an appropriate correlation function, the interaction between the longitudinal and transverse waves is described

    Phase-field model for grain boundary grooving in multi-component thin films

    Polycrystalline thin films can be unstable with respect to island formation (agglomeration) through grooving where grain boundaries intersect the free surface and/or thin film-substrate interface. We develop a phase-field model to study the evolution of the phases, composition, microstructure and morphology of such thin films. The phase-field model is quite general, describing compounds and solid solution alloys with sufficient freedom to choose solubilities, grain boundary and interface energies, and heats of segregation to all interfaces. We present analytical results which describe the interface profiles, with and without segregation, and confirm them using numerical simulations. We demonstrate that the present model accurately reproduces the theoretical grain boundary groove angles both at and far from equilibrium. As an example, we apply the phase-field model to the special case of a Ni(Pt)Si (Ni/Pt silicide) thin film on an initially flat silicon substrate.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Modelling Simulation Mater.
