    Quasi-molecular lines in Lyman wings of cool DA white dwarfs; Application to FUSE observations of G231-40

    We present new theoretical calculations of the total line profiles of Lyman alpha and Lyman beta which include perturbations by both neutral hydrogen AND protons and all possible quasi-molecular states of H_2 and H_2^+. They are used to improve theoretical modeling of synthetic spectra for cool DA white dwarfs. We compare them with FUSE observation of G231-40. The appearance of the line wings between Lyman alpha and Lyman beta is shown to be sensitive to the relative abundance of hydrogen ions and neutral atoms, and thereby to provide a temperature diagnostic for stellar atmospheres and laboratory plasmas.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Development of sputtered techniques for thrust chambers

    The 0.152 cm thick sputtered and copper deposits were electron beam welded to wrought copper. Tensile specimens were machined from the weld assemblies and tested at room temperature. Tensile strength approached the strength of wrought material. Elongations up to 25% were measured. Sputtered aluminum was used to fill 0.157 cm wide by 0.127 cm deep grooves in thrust chamber spool piece liners. The liners were closed out by sputtering copper from post and hollow cathodes

    Interactions of UHE cosmic ray nuclei with radiation during acceleration: consequences on the spectrum and composition

    In this paper, we study the diffusive shock acceleration of cosmic-ray protons and nuclei, taking into account all the relevant interaction processes with photon backgrounds. We investigate how the competition between protons and nuclei is modified by the acceleration parameters such as the acceleration rate, its rigidity dependence, the photon density and the confinement capability of the sources. We find that in the case of interaction-limited acceleration processes protons are likely to be accelerated to higher energies than nuclei, whereas for confinement-limited acceleration nuclei are accelerated to higher energies than protons. Finally, we discuss our results in the context of possible astrophysical accelerators, and in the light of recent cosmic-ray data.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures A few paragraphs and one figure added for clarity, figures slightly redesigned, no changes in the result

    RCTS: A flexible environment for sensor integration and control of robot systems; the distributed processing approach

    Most robot systems lack a suitable hardware and software environment for the efficient research of new control and sensing schemes. Typically, engineers and researchers need to be experts in control, sensing, programming, communication and robotics in order to implement, integrate and test new ideas in a robot system. In order to reduce this time, the Robot Controller Test Station (RCTS) has been developed. It uses a modular hardware and software architecture allowing easy physical and functional reconfiguration of a robot. This is accomplished by emphasizing four major design goals: flexibility, portability, ease of use, and ease of modification. An enhanced distributed processing version of RCTS is described. It features an expanded and more flexible communication system design. Distributed processing results in the availability of more local computing power and retains the low cost of microprocessors. A large number of possible communication, control and sensing schemes can therefore be easily introduced and tested, using the same basic software structure

    The High Energy Astronomy Observatory - Mission B (HEAO-B), an earth orbiting X-ray telescope facility capable of locating and imaging celestial X-ray sources within one second of arc in the celestial sphere, is considered. The Focal Plane Transport Assembly (FPTA) is one of the basic structural elements of the three thousand pound HEAO-B experiment payload. The FPTA is a multifunctional assembly which supports seven imaging X-ray detectors circumferentially about a central shaft and accurately positions any particular one into the focus of a high resolution mirror assembly. A drive system, position sensor, rotary coupler, and detent alignment system, all an integral part of the rotatable portion which in turn is supported by main bearings to the stationary focal plane housing are described

    Development of sputtered techniques for thrust chambers

    Procedures for closing out coolant passages in regeneratively cooled thrust chambers by triode sputtering, using post and hollow Cu-0.15 percent Zr cathodes are described. The effects of aluminum composite filler materials, substrate preparation, sputter cleaning, substrate bias current density and system geometry on closeout layer bond strength and structure are evaluated. High strength closeout layers were sputtered over aluminum fillers. The tensile strength and microstructure of continuously sputtered Cu-0.15 percent Zr deposits were determined. These continuous sputtered deposits were as thick as 0.75 cm. Tensile strengths were consistently twice as great as the strength of the material in wrought form

    Characterization of a Quantum Light Source Based on Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion

    We have built a quantum light source capable of producing different types of quantum states. The quantum light source is based on entangled state preparation in the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The single-photon detection rate of eight-hundred thousand per second demonstrates that we have created a bright state-of-the-art quantum light source. As a part of the characterization we measured two-photon quantum interference in a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer.Comment: 33 page

    Spatial Extent of Random Laser Modes

    We have experimentally studied the distribution of the spatial extent of modes and the crossover from essentially single-mode to distinctly multimode behavior inside a porous gallium phosphide random laser. This system serves as a paragon for random lasers due to its exemplary high index contrast. In the multimode regime, we observed mode competition. We have measured the distribution of spectral mode spacings in our emission spectra and found level repulsion that is well described by the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random-matrix theory
