    A Rare Second Year - Lake Ice Cover in the Canadian High Arctic

    Colour Lake, Axel Heiberg Island, N.W.T. (79 25 N; 90 45 W), remained largely ice covered from autumn 1985 to summer 1987. This is a relatively rare event. Observations and measurements of the thickness and specific conductance of the lake ice cover were made at the end of the 1986 summer and again in the following spring. The residual ice cover (second-year ice with first-year ice beneath it) was significantly thicker and had a lower specific conductance than first-year ice formed in marginal leads (moat) that had been ice free in 1986. The first-year ice that grew beneath the residual ice cover had the lowest specific conductance. Distribution of snow on the lake was affected by the roughness of the second-year ice (as compared to the smoother moat ice) and differences in elevation between second-year (high) and moat ice.Key words: High Arctic, specific conductance, residual ice cover, snow distributionMots clés: Extrême-Arctique, conductivité spécifique, couverture de glace résiduelle, répartition de la neig

    Ab-initio study of oxygen vacancies in alpha-quartz

    Extrinsic levels, formation energies, and relaxation geometries are calculated ab initio for oxygen vacancies in alpha-quartz SiO2. The vacancy is found to be thermodynamically stable in the charge states Q=+3, Q=0, Q=--2, and Q=-3. The charged states are stabilized by large and asymmetric distortions near the vacancy site. Concurrently, Franck-Condon shifts for absorption and recombination related to these states are found to be strongly asymmetric. In undoped quartz, the ground state of the vacancy is the neutral charge state, while for moderate p-type and n-type doping, the +3 and -3 states are favored, respectively, over a wide Fermi level window. Optical transitions related to the vacancy are predicted at around 3 eV and 6.5 eV (absorption) and 2.5 to 3.0 eV (emission), depending on the charge state of the ground state.Comment: 6 figures included, but only Fig.1 actually change

    Hospitalisation without delirium is not associated with cognitive decline in a population-based sample of older people-results from a nested, longitudinal cohort study

    Background: Acute hospitalisation and delirium have individually been shown to adversely affect trajectories of cognitive decline but have not previously been considered together. This work aimed to explore the impact on cognition of hospital admission with and without delirium, compared to a control group with no hospital admissions. Methods: The Delirium and Cognitive Impact in Dementia (DECIDE) study was nested within the Cognitive Function and Ageing Study II (CFAS II)-Newcastle cohort. CFAS II participants completed two baseline interviews, including the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). During 2016, surviving participants from CFAS II-Newcastle were recruited to DECIDE on admission to hospital. Participants were reviewed daily to determine delirium status. During 2017, all DECIDE participants and age, sex and years of education matched controls without hospital admissions during 2016 were invited to repeat the CFAS II interview. Delirium was excluded in the control group using the Informant Assessment of Geriatric Delirium Scale (i-AGeD). Linear mixed effects modelling determined predictors of cognitive decline. Results: During 2016, 82 of 205 (40%) DECIDE participants had at least one episode of delirium. At 1 year, 135 of 205 hospitalised participants completed an interview along with 100 controls. No controls experienced delirium (i-AGeD>4). Delirium was associated with a faster rate of cognitive decline compared to those without delirium (β =-2.2, P < 0.001), but number of hospital admissions was not (P = 0.447). Conclusions: These results suggest that delirium during hospitalisation rather than hospitalisation per se is a risk factor for future cognitive decline, emphasising the need for dementia prevention studies that focus on delirium intervention

    GPIHBP1 expression in gliomas promotes utilization of lipoprotein-derived nutrients

    GPIHBP1, a GPI-anchored protein of capillary endothelial cells, binds lipoprotein lipase (LPL) within the subendothelial spaces and shuttles it to the capillary lumen. The GPIHBP1-bound LPL is essential for the margination of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRLs) along capillaries, allowing the lipolytic processing of TRLs to proceed. In peripheral tissues, the intravascular processing of TRLs by the GPIHBP1-LPL complex is crucial for generating lipid nutrients for adjacent parenchymal cells. GPIHBP1 is absent in capillaries of the brain, which uses glucose for fuel; however, GPIHBP1 is expressed in capillaries of mouse and human gliomas. Importantly, the GPIHBP1 in glioma capillaries captures locally produced LPL. We document, by NanoSIMS imaging, that TRLs marginate along glioma capillaries and that there is uptake of TRL-derived lipid nutrients by surrounding glioma cells. Thus, GPIHBP1 expression in gliomas facilitates TRL processing and provides a source of lipid nutrients for glioma cells

    Evidences for subclinic chronic autoimmune thyroid disease in girls with Turner Syndrome

    Patients with Turner syndrome (TS) frequently exhibit transient, recurrent and asymptomatic variations of TSH and/or thyroid hormones (TH). This work was carried out to evaluate thyroid function and structure in patients with TS who had had such variations in hormone concentrations. Our sample comprised 24 patients, 17 less than 20-years old. Evaluation included serum levels of TSH, free T4, total T3, TPO and Tg autoantibodies, thyroid ultrasound (US) and scintigraphy with 99mTc-pertechnetate. Thirteen patients had abnormal TSH and/or TH levels; 23 exhibited US features compatible with chronic thyroid disorder, particularly thyromegaly (established according to volume expected for stature) and heterogeneous echogenicity. Uptake was normal in 21 cases and tracer distribution was homogeneous in 22. The finding of abnormal hormone concentrations was independent of age, length of time since the first similar finding, thyroid autoantibodies, number of abnormalities at US and abnormal scintigraphic findings. Patients aged more than 20 years had higher frequency of thyroid antibodies and heterogeneous echogenicity, and thyroid volume was significantly correlated to length of time since detection of the first hormone variation, indicating progressive thyroid disease. These results suggest that subclinical thyroid dysfunction in TS is due to chronic autoimmune thyroid disease.O seguimento de pacientes com síndrome de Turner (ST) freqüentemente revela alterações transitórias, recorrentes e assintomáticas de TSH e/ou hormônios tireóideos (HT). Neste trabalho foram avaliadas estrutura e função da tireóide em portadoras da ST com história de alterações prévias desses hormônios. A casuística incluiu 24 pacientes, 17 com menos de 20 anos, avaliadas laboratorialmente pelas concentrações séricas de TSH, T4 livre, T3 e anticorpos anti-TPO e anti-Tg, e morfologicamente por ultra-sonografia (USG) e cintilografia com pertecnetato-99mTc. Havia alterações de TSH e/ou HT em 13 casos, e em 23 havia alterações USG compatíveis com doença crônica da tireóide, particularmente tireomegalia (estabelecida de acordo com o volume esperado para a estatura) e heterogeneidade do parênquima. A captação foi normal em 21 casos e a distribuição do radiofármaco, homogênea em 22. As alterações hormonais foram independentes da idade, do tempo de evolução, da presença de anticorpos, do número de anomalias USG e de alterações cintilográficas. Pacientes maiores de 20 anos apresentaram maior freqüência de anticorpos e de hipoecogenicidade do parênquima, e houve correlação positiva entre o volume tireóideo e o tempo de evolução, indicando comprometimento progressivo da glândula.     Rapid and highly variable warming of lake surface waters around the globe

    In this first worldwide synthesis of in situ and satellite-derived lake data, we find that lake summer surface water temperatures rose rapidly (global mean = 0.34°C decade−1) between 1985 and 2009. Our analyses show that surface water warming rates are dependent on combinations of climate and local characteristics, rather than just lake location, leading to the counterintuitive result that regional consistency in lake warming is the exception, rather than the rule. The most rapidly warming lakes are widely geographically distributed, and their warming is associated with interactions among different climatic factors—from seasonally ice-covered lakes in areas where temperature and solar radiation are increasing while cloud cover is diminishing (0.72°C decade−1) to ice-free lakes experiencing increases in air temperature and solar radiation (0.53°C decade−1). The pervasive and rapid warming observed here signals the urgent need to incorporate climate impacts into vulnerability assessments and adaptation efforts for lakes.Peer reviewe
