    Pros and Cons of Oil and Gas Exploration in Lofoten.

    Master's thesis in Business InnovationThe aim of the study is to logically respond to the ongoing dilemma on Lofoten that whether Lofoten should be open for oil and gas extraction based on cost-benefit analysis. So far, our knowledge is concerning a little attempt that has been made to evaluate the Lofoten area by considering all possible costs and benefits by conducting an optimal cost benefit analysis. Net Present Value (NPV) method is used to analyse the net effects after collecting and processing the secondary data. It is a 50 years projection from 2020 to 2070 and therefore previous data are extensively used to project future cash flows, which were discounted by 3% rate which is also the rate of return from the Norwegian Government Pension Fund Global (GPFG). The direct benefit from oil and gas extraction, possible indirect losses from fishing and tourism, expected petroleum supply sector benefit, possible oil spill and clean-up costs and environmental cost are the basic factor that has been taken into consideration during the course of the study. Net costs are deducted from the net benefit we come up with a negative value (net loss) of NOK 1.71 billion. That indicates that considering the aforementioned factors if oil and gas extraction is allowed in Lofoten area the ,Norwegian government will incur a loss of NOK 1.71 billion over the next 50-year period. Therefore, the answer of the question of “whether Lofoten should be open for oil and gas extraction” is “No” according to our finding. In addition, we also suggested the avenue for future researches by presenting the fact that our study hasn’t taken into account

    Serum Neudesin Levels in Obese Adolescents

    Objective: Advances in knowledge of neurotrophic factors are now revealing the complex control of energy homeostasis and appetite, as well as the crucial role these factors play in nervous system function. The aim of this study was to assess serum levels of neudesin in adolescents with obesity and to examine the relationship between these levels and metabolic outcomes. Methods: Adolescents, aged 10-17 years were enrolled. Subjects were divided into normal weight, obese and morbidly obese subgroups. Serum neudesin concentrations were compared between the groups. Results: In total, 88 adolescents were recruited, of whom 30 (34.1%) were normal weight, 15 (17.0%) were obese and 43 (48.9%) were morbidly obese. Neudesin levels were significantly lower in obese adolescents than in the control group (p=0.013). A correlation analysis applied to the whole study group revealed a negative correlation between serum neudesin concentration and body mass index (BMI) z scores (r=-0.40, p<0.001). Serum neudesin levels tended to increase in adolescents with metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, dyslipidaemia, and hypertension but the differences were not significant (p=0.259, p=0.246, p=0.259, and p=0.523, respectively). Conclusion: Serum neudesin levels were significantly correlated with BMI z score in obese adolescents. Generally, serum neudesin levels were low in obese and morbidly obese adolescents and tended to increase with the appearance of metabolic disorders. Both obesity and associated metabolic disorders have multifactorial causes. Therefore, we suggest that the role of the neudesin molecule in the regulatory mechanisms of obesity and metabolic disorders should be further investigated with well-designed studies enrolling larger groups

    Diabetology and rheumatology have much in common, including many biochemical features. Diabetic cases suffer excessively from common musculoskeletal conditions. The present study aimed to explore the association between the caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) treatment and the standard parameters of diabetic and rheumatologic controls. Serum anti-streptolysin-O (ASO), C-reactive protein (CRP), rheumatoid factor (RF) titers and glucose (GLU), cholesterol (CHOL), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein (HDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), sodium (Na), potassium (K), chloride (Cl), calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), uric acid (UA), iron (Fe), iron-binding capacity (IBC), total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels were measured in 22 female Wistar-Albino rats. The animals were divided into three groups: group 1: non-diabetic rats as control; group 2: streptozotocin (STZ)-induced, untreated diabetic rats; and group 3: STZ-induced, CAPE-treated diabetic rats. Levels of GLU were increased in group 2. ASO values were decreased in group 3. TG and VLDL levels were increased in group 3 compared with the group 1. Higher UA levels were detected in group 3 compared with group 2. The levels of Fe and TIBC were decreased in group 3. The results of the present study indicate the reducing effect of CAPE on the serum levels of diabetic and rheumatologic parameters in diabetic rats.Dijabetologija i reumatologija imaju mnoge sličnosti, uključujući biokemijske procese. Oboljeli od dijabetesa pate od teških stanja mišićno-koštanog sustava. U ovom radu istražena je povezanost između liječenja fenetil esterom kavene kiseline i standardnih pokazatelja koji se kontroliraju pri dijabetičnim i reumatoidnim bolestima. Kod 22 Wistar-Albino štakorice mjereni su: serumski anti-streptolizin-O (ASO), C-reaktivni protein (CRP), titar reumatoidnog faktora (RF), zatim razina glukoze (GLU), kolesterola (CHOL), triglicerida (TG), lipoproteina visoke gustoće (HDL), lipoproteina vrlo niske gustoće (VLDL), alkalne fosfataze (ALP), gamaglutamil transferaze (GGT), natrija (Na), kalija (K), klorida (Cl), kalcija (Ca), fosfora (P), mokraćne kiseline (UA), željeza (Fe), kapaciteta vezanja željeza (IBC), ukupnog kapaciteta vezanja željeza (TIBC) i superoksid dismutaze (SOD). Životinje su bile podijeljene u tri skupine: 1. štakorice bez dijabetesa (kontrolna skupina), 2. neliječene štakorice s dijabetesom izazvanim streptozotocinom (STZ) i 3. štakorice sa streptozotocin (STZ) - izazvanim dijabetesom liječenim fenetil esterom kavene kiseline. Razine GLU bile su povećane u skupini 2. ASO vrijednosti bile su snižene u skupini 3. Razine TG i VLDL bile su povišene u skupini 3 u usporedbi s razinama u skupini 1. Više razine UA utvrđene su u skupini 3 u usporedbi sa skupinom 2. Razine Fe i TIBC bile su snižene u skupini 3. Rezultati pokazuju reducirajuće učinke fenetil estera kavene kiseline na razinu dijabetičnih i reumatoloških pokazatelja u serumu štakorica sa šećernom bolešću izazvanom streptozotocinom

    Community Seed Production of Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) and Lentil (Lens culinaris Medic) in Ethiopia

    Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) and lentil (Lens culinaris Medic) are the most important grain legumes covering 21.3% of the total acreage (1.6 million ha) and 24.1% of production (23.2 millon tons) of all pulse crops in Ethiopia (CSA 2012). They are grown by more than 1.7 million farmers; are major staple food legumes and are a good source of dietary protein (17 %, 23%). These crops require low input for production and can maintain and restore soil fertility (can fix up to 60 kg N /ha/year). Moreover, they are high potential crops for domestic and export markets and considered to be strategic crops for national food security and agricultural development in the country. Two different types of seed supply systems, formal and informal (community seed production) are known in Ethiopia. To date the majority chickpea and lentil producers obtain their seed for planting informally from own saved seed or through local exchange. The informal seed system for chickpea and lentil currently operates at the individual farmer or community level and depends on local knowledge of plant and seed selection, sourcing, retaining and management, as well as local diffusion mechanisms. It is, therefore, important to continually search for solutions to improve the availability of, access to and use of quality seed required by farmers. In this paper, we provide an overview of community seed production and delivery systems of chickpea and lentil operating in the country; review the initiatives and document best approaches to improve the availability of improved quality seeds to farmers in order to maximize productivity of these crops in Ethiopia

    Tetrasubstituted copper phthalocyanines : correlation between liquid crystalline properties, films alignment and sensing propertie

    Copper phthalocyanines (CuPc) containing alkylthio (-S(CH2)nCH3, n=7 and 15), alkyloxy- (-O(CH2)nCH3, n=7 and 15) and polyoxo (-O(CH2CH2O)3CH3 and -S(CH2CH2O)3CH3) substituents were synthesized and investigated to reveal the effects of substituents type (alkylthio, alkyloxy and polyoxo) and the type of the connecting heteroatom (oxygen or sulphur) on the mesogenic properties, films alignment and sensing behaviour. The liquid crystalline properties of these phthalocyanines were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. The structure and morphology of spun thin films of copper phthalocyanine derivatives were studied by the UV-Vis and Raman spectroscopies as well atomic force microscopy. The sensing properties of CuPc films were studied by the measurement of conductivity change upon interaction with ammonia in the range 10-50 ppm. All investigated films of CuPc derivatives display thermotropic columnar mesomorphism. It was shown that the films with polyoxo- (-O(CH2CH2O)3CH3 and -S(CH2CH2O)3CH3) substituents as well as with alkylthio -S(CH2)nCH3 (n=7) substituents, which are liquid crystalline at room temperature, form ordered films with a random planar alignment of columns. Their films exhibit the better sensor performance with the maximal sensor response for the films of CuPc containing (-S(CH2CH2O)3CH3) substituents

    A systems and partnership approach to agricultural research for development: Lessons from Ethiopia

    In spite of the availability of several improved agricultural technologies generated by the research system in Ethiopia over the last four decades, adoption of these innovations by smallholder farmers has been very low. This has led to stagnation of agricultural productivity and low crop yields, exposing the country to recurrent food shortfalls and national food insecurity. The old approach to agricultural research emphasized developing new technologies mainly through onstation research that were then supposed to reach farmers through the public-sector extension system. The Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) has in recent years introduced a shift in agricultural research for development, which is based on the innovation systems approach that involved cultivating partnerships with several actors along the value chain, especially farmers, farmers’ cooperatives and input suppliers. This paper presents the methodology used to facilitate agricultural innovations and the diffusion of new technologies and illustrates the outcomes of this initiative with regard to technology adoption, productivity growth and the market orientation of production. The authors use examples from experiences in scaling up three grain legumes. Compared to the three-year baseline average (2003–05), crop output increased nationally by 89%, 85% and 97% in 2008 for common bean, chickpea and lentil respectively. Nationally, 53–59% of the output growth is attributable to yield growth due to technological change, while the balance is due to area expansion. These results affirm that the new approach has led to accelerated adoption of new and high-yielding or low-risk varieties

    Intrahepatic cholestasis in subclinical and overt hyperthyroidism: two case reports

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Non-specific abnormalities in liver function tests might accompany the clinical course of hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism can cause the elevation of hepatic enzymes and bilirubin. Jaundice is rare in overt hyperthyroidism, especially in subclinical hyperthyroidism. On the other hand, the use of anti-thyroid drugs has rarely been associated with toxic hepatitis and cholestatic jaundice.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>Here we present two cases of cholestasis that accompanied two distinct forms of clinical hyperthyroidism. The first patient had a clinical presentation of severe cholestasis in the absence of congestive failure related to hyperthyroidism. The second case had developed intrahepatic cholestasis in the presence of subclinical hyperthyroidism, and improved with rifampicin treatment.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Hyperthyroidism should be a consideration in non-specific liver dysfunction.</p

    Impact of Obesity on Pediatric Acute Recurrent and Chronic Pancreatitis

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of obesity on pediatric acute recurrent pancreatitis or chronic pancreatitis (CP). METHODS: We determined body mass index (BMI) status at enrollment in INSPPIRE (INternational Study group of Pediatric Pancreatitis: In search for a cuRE) cohort using CDC criteria for pediatric-specific BMI percentiles. We used the Cochran-Armitage test to assess trends and the Jonckheere-Terpstra test to determine associations. RESULTS: Of 446 subjects (acute recurrent pancreatitis, n = 241; CP, n = 205), 22 were underweight, 258 normal weight, 75 overweight, and 91 were obese. The BMI groups were similar in sex, race, and age at presentation. Hypertriglyceridemia was more common in overweight or obese. Obese children were less likely to have CP and more likely to have acute inflammation on imaging. Compared with children with normal weight, obese or overweight children were older at first acute pancreatitis episode and diagnosed with CP at an older age. Obese or overweight children were less likely to undergo medical or endoscopic treatment, develop exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, and require total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation. Diabetes was similar among all groups. CONCLUSIONS: Obesity or overweight seems to delay the initial acute pancreatitis episode and diagnosis of CP compared with normal weight or underweight. The impact of obesity on pediatric CP progression and severity deserves further study

    Measuring regional creative capacity: A literature review for rural-specific approaches

    Recent theories on regional creative capacity often focus on urban regions without taking into account rural regions. In addition, the application of such analyses to rural regions may lead to misrepresentation or misunderstanding of rural creative capacity. Against this background, the aim of the present study is to integrate the existing literature on different components of creative capacity, namely, knowledge, innovation, entrepreneurship and networks, in order to build a more comprehensive framework for rural creative capacity and its evaluation. In the light of the perspective from the empirical literature review on the evaluation of creative capacity in rural regions, various empirical measurements seem to misrepresent or underestimate the creative capacity of rural regions. Therefore, there is a clear need to use the locality in relation to its dynamics, i.e. tacit knowledge, cultural heritage and social and physical environment as the main and basic measurement unit for creative capacity analysis. 2010 Taylor & Francis
