Reconfiguration of catholic monarchy in Indias: Treaties of princes in Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora and sor Juana Inés de la Cruz

Este ensayo analiza cómo dos de los intelectuales criollos más destacados de Nueva España, Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora y sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, propusieron una fórmula de gobierno para la colonia a través de un elaborado programa iconográfico, cuyo contenido se transmitió al nuevo virrey durante su entrada triunfal en la ciudad de México en 1680. Por medio de las empresas sugeridas de manera didáctica en dos arcos triunfales confeccionados respectivamente por ambos escritores, además de a través de dos relevantes obras que explicaban los símbolos y alegorías contenidos en esas edificaciones efímeras, el Teatro de Virtudes políticas que constituyen a un príncipe y el Neptuno Alegórico, se comunicaba una exhortación al Marqués de la Laguna para tomar como modelos ejemplares los elementos distintivos de la historia mexicana y de la mitología clásica en sendos casos, lo que conformaría nuevos parámetros para la dirección de la Monarquía española en Indias..This essay aims to study how the two most intellectually gifted creoles in New Spain, Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora and sor Juana Inés de la Cruz came through with a political plan to enable the new viceroy, the Marquis de la Laguna, to rule the Spanish colony of Mexico in 1680. Through didactic messages depicted in two honorific triumphal arches designed by them for the important occasion of the viceroy´s entrance in the capital city, together with the thorough explanation contained in their works Teatro de Virtudes Politicas que constituyen a un príncipe and Neptuno Alegórico, respectively, the King´s representative could rule his American subjects destiny taking as a model or example the native and ethnic, elements of the New World, as well as the classical mythological items of Antiquit

Modernity and tradition, science and theology: Francisco Javier Alegre and the Institutionum theologicarum

"En este trabajo se estudian algunos aspectos del pensamiento del jesuita Francisco Javier Alegre (1729-1788), sobre todo en lo relativo a sus propuestas teológicas, científicas, filosóficas e históricas. Gran parte del trabajo se dedica a analizar elementos contenidos en su monumental libro, las Institutionum theologicarum, obra relativamente poco estudiada, ya que sus siete tomos permanecen sin traducción completa del latín.""This article discusses some aspects of Francisco Javier Alegre’s thought (1729-1788), particularly his theological, scientific, philosophical and historical proposals. Much of the paper is devoted to analyzing elements of his monumental work, the Institutionum theologicarum, opus relatively understudied, as their seven volumes translation from Latin remains incomplete.

Lutero desde América Latina

Este trabajo se propone analizar la percepción que de Martín Lutero se ha tenido en América Latina a lo largo de su historia. Este contexto no ha sido un campo en el que se ha profundizado lo suficiente y, de hecho, podría percibirse el tema sobre el reformador y su propuesta teológica como algo totalmente ajeno al ámbito Latinoamericano. Sin embargo, resulta de sumo interés la manera en que ha sido abordado, estudiado, atacado o comprendido el otrora fraile agustino alemán en un mundo que fue heredero de los valores hispánicos y contrarreformistas desde los tiempos mismos de su conformación, primero, como colonias y después por estados nacionales con una herencia histórica y un bagaje cultural que condiciona la forma en que el personaje histórico ha sido visto a lo largo del tiempo.This paper aims to analyze the perception of Martin Luther in Latin America throughout its history. This context has not been sufficiently studied in depth and, in fact, the topic of the reformer and his theological proposal could be perceived as something totally foreign to the Latin American sphere. However, of great interest is the way in which the former German Augustinian monk has been approached, studied, attacked or understood in a world that was heir to Hispanic and counter-reformist values since the very times of its formation, first, as colonies and then as nation states with a historical heritage and a cultural background that shape how this historical character has been seen over time

Política contrarreformista e imagen anti-luterana en Nueva España

This paper analyzes the political thought of the Counterreformation in the context of Colonial Mexico. In colonial society, the image of the German reformer Martin Luther served not only as an element of propaganda against the Protestant Reformation, but also as the antithesis of Catholic Colonial cultural and ideological values, mainly of the creoles. Consequently here the Counterreformation ideology and values is analyzed through the anti-Lutheran discourse from the historiographical point of view, theological and iconographic.Este trabajo analiza el pensamiento político de la Contrarreforma en el contexto del México colonial. En la sociedad novohispana, la figura del reformador alemán, Martín Lutero sirvió no sólo como un elemento de propaganda contra la reforma protestante, sino como antítesis de los valores culturales e ideológicos de los católicos novohispanos, principalmente de los criollos. Consecuentemente aquí se analiza la ideología contrarreformista y sus valores a través del discurso anti luterano desde el punto de vista historiográfico, el teológico y el iconográfico
