    Manager gender, entrepreneurial orientation and SMEs export and import propensities: evidence for Spanish businesses

    This paper investigates the role of manager gender in SMEs’ decisions to get involved in exporting and importing activities, using a sample of 1,405 Spanish SMEs. We borrow insights from international entrepreneurship theories and feminist theories to set testable hypotheses regarding how managerial gender and entrepreneurial orientation (proactiveness, risk-taking and innovativeness) may influence SMEs export and import propensities. Using a bivariate probit model and controlling for other managerial and business characteristics, results reveal that there are not significant disparities in exporting propensities between men- and women-run businesses. However, female-led SMEs show a lower importing propensity, in comparison to male-led counterparts. In addition, the three entrepreneurial orientation dimensions (proactiveness, risk-taking and innovativeness) are important drivers for participating in overseas markets, and do not depend upon the manager gender. This work provides new empirical evidence on the comparison between men- and women-run SMEs as regards export/import behavior and thus, it contributes to improve our knowledge on the role of gender in SMEs internationalization.     Study of the notch fatigue behaviour under biaxial conditions of maraging steel produced by selective laser melting.

    The current work aims to characterise the fatigue behaviour of an additively manufactured maraging steel, AISI 18Ni300. This is a class of high-strength steel widely used in biomedical, aircraft, aerospace, offshore, and military industries thanks to its good performance in terms of strength, toughness, ductility, dimensional stability, and weldability. Laser-beam powder bed fusion (additive manufacturing) is used to fabricate this type of steel and endows it with properties that make it an excellent candidate for producing prosthetic parts, thereby facilitating a reduction in manufacturing material consumption, labour, and machining time. Given the wide range of loads biomedical components are often subjected to, the current study focused on the multiaxial behaviour of this type of steel. To this end, Fatemi–Socie (FS) and Smith–Watson–Topper (SWT) critical plane methods combined with the theory of critical distances were applied to predict the fatigue life and cracking orientation of this material, with and without notches, under three biaxial loading scenarios. Cylindrical specimens were used and these were fabricated on the base plate in the vertical orientation using a linear printing system equipped with a Nd:YAG fibre laser. The building strategy involved the deposition of 40 μm thick layers at a scan speed of 800 mm/s. The two critical plane models returned good results at low life cycle fatigue but the FS model obtained better results at high life cycle fatigue. Regarding the crack angles, SWT model produced the best predictions

    Meta-Analysis of Studies Analyzing the Role of Human Papillomavirus in the Development of Bladder Carcinoma

    Journal Article;PURPOSE We aimed to ascertain the degree of association between bladder cancer and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. MATERIALS AND METHODS We performed a meta-analysis of observational studies with cases and controls with publication dates up to January 2011. The PubMed electronic database was searched by using the key words "bladder cancer and virus." Twenty-one articles were selected that met the required methodological criteria. We implemented an internal quality control system to verify the selected search method. We analyzed the pooled effect of all the studies and also analyzed the techniques used as follows: 1) studies with DNA-based techniques, among which we found studies with polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based techniques and 2) studies with non-PCR-based techniques, and studies with non-DNA-based techniques. RESULTS Taking into account the 21 studies that were included in the meta-analysis, we obtained a heterogeneity chi-squared value of Q(exp)=26.45 (p=0.383). The pooled odds ratio (OR) was 2.13 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.54 to 2.95), which points to a significant effect between HPV and bladder cancer. Twenty studies assessed the presence of DNA. The overall effect showed a significant relationship between virus presence and bladder cancer, with a pooled OR of 2.19 (95% CI, 1.40 to 3.43). Of the other six studies, four examined the virus's capsid antigen and two detected antibodies in serum by Western blot. The estimated pooled OR in this group was 2.11 (95% CI, 1.27 to 3.51), which confirmed the relationship between the presence of virus and cancer. CONCLUSIONS The pooled OR value showed a moderate relationship between viral infection and bladder tumors.Ye

    A review of nature-based solutions for urban water management in European circular cities: a critical assessment based on case studies and literature

    Abstract Nature-based solutions (NBS) can protect, manage and restore natural or modified ecosystems. They are a multidisciplinary, integrated approach to address societal challenges and some natural hazards effectively and adaptively, simultaneously providing human well-being and biodiversity benefits. NBS applications can be easily noticed in circular cities, establishing an urban system that is regenerative and accessible. This paper aims to offer a review on NBS for urban water management from the literature and some relevant projects running within the COST Action 'Implementing nature-based solutions for creating a resourceful circular city'. The method used in the study is based on a detailed tracking of specific keywords in the literature using Google Scholar, ResearchGate, Academia.edu, ScienceDirect and Scopus. Based on this review, three main applications were identified: (i) flood and drought protection; (ii) the water-food-energy nexus; and (iii) water purification. The paper shows that NBS provide additional benefits, such as improving water quality, increasing biodiversity, obtaining social co-benefits, improving urban microclimate, and the reduction of energy consumption by improving indoor climate. The paper concludes that a systemic change to NBS should be given a higher priority and be preferred over conventional water infrastructure

    Analysis of irrigation water tariffs and taxes in Europe

    Water taxation in European Union (EU) countries is adapted to local conditions and institutional trajectories and contains a variety of taxes and tariffs to finance water services and induce a higher use efficiency. After having clarified certain concepts, thiswork offers an overviewofwater taxes and tariffs charged for agriculturalwater use in several European Union member states, both in water-abundant areas and in water-scarce regions. Mediterranean countries, such as France, Portugal, Italy and Spain, have implemented different tax systems on agriculturalwater abstractions to recover the costs of the regulation, storage, and management of basin-level water services with various levels of cost recovery in accordance with the provision by the Water Framework Directive. France, Portugal, and Italy have implemented an abstraction tax applied to any water source (surface and groundwater) as an instrument to induce water saving and internalize environmental and resource costs in the irrigation sector. Despite these efforts, current taxation remains very lowin the European context. On the other hand, Northern European countries (including the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark) have no fiscal instruments related to agricultural abstractions (neither for surface nor for groundwater resources)

    Innovation and business performance for Spanish SMEs: New evidence from a multi-dimensional approach

    Copyright de los autores.This article examines the impact of product, process and organisational innovations on two alternative dimensions of business performance: finance and operations. Two indicators capture financial performance: sales increase and production cost reduction. Operational firm performance is captured by two alternative indicators: productive capacity augmentation and quality improvement of product/service provided by the firm. Using a wide-ranging sample of Spanish small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), our findings highlight the significant impact of innovation upon both these dimensions of business performance, although they differ regarding the type of innovation and the performance indicator considered. Furthermore, our results indicate that the relationship between innovation choices in SMEs and business performance should be analysed from a multi-dimensional approach. These findings reveal significant implications for innovation policies and strategies for SMEs

    Development of biological tools to assess the role of TMPRSS4 and identification of novel tumor types with high expression of this prometastatic protein

    Metastatic spread is responsible for the majority of cancer deaths and identification of metastasisrelated therapeutic targets is compulsory. TMPRSS4 is a pro-metastatic druggable transmembrane type II serine protease whose expression has been associated with the development of several cancer types and poor prognosis. To study the role and expression of this protease in cancer, we have developed molecular tools (active recombinant proteins and a polyclonal antibody) that can be used for diagnostic purposes and for testing anti-TMPRSS4 drugs. In addition, we have evaluated TMPRSS4 protein expression in several cancer tissue microarrays (TMAs). Full length and truncated TMPRSS4 recombinant proteins maintained the catalytic activity in two different expression systems (baculovirus and E. coli). Sensitivity of the rabbit polyclonal antisera against TMPRSS4 (ING-pAb) outperformed the antibody most commonly used in clinical settings. Analysis by immunohistochemistry in the different TMAs identified a subset of adenocarcinomas, squamous carcinomas, large cell carcinomas and carcinoids of the lung, in which TMPRSS4 expression may define aggressive tumors. In conclusion, our biological tools will help the characterization of TMPRSS4 activity and protein expression, as well as the evaluation of anti-TMPRSS4 drugs. Future studies should determine the clinical value of assessing TMPRSS4 levels in different types of lung cancer
