Using a standing-tree acoustic tool to identify forest stands for the production of mechanically-graded lumber.
This study investigates how the use of a Hitman ST300 acoustic sensor can help identify the best forest stands to be used as supply sources for the production of Machine Stress-Rated (MSR) lumber. Using two piezoelectric sensors, the ST300 measures the velocity of a mechanical wave induced in a standing tree. Measurements were made on 333 black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP) trees from the North Shore region, Quebec (Canada) selected across a range of locations and along a chronosequence of elapsed time since the last fire (TSF). Logs were cut from a subsample of 39 trees, and sawn into 77 pieces of 38 mm × 89 mm cross-section before undergoing mechanical testing according to ASTM standard D-4761. A linear regression model was developed to predict the static modulus of elasticity of lumber using tree acoustic velocity and stem diameter at 1.3 m above ground level (R2 = 0.41). Results suggest that, at a regional level, 92% of the black spruce trees meet the requirements of MSR grade 1650Fb-1.5E, whilst 64% and 34% meet the 2100Fb-1.8E and 2400Fb-2.0E, respectively. Mature stands with a TSF < 150 years had 11 and 18% more boards in the latter two categories, respectively, and therefore represented the best supply source for MSR lumber
Using Acoustic Sensors to Improve the Efficiency of the Forest Value Chain in Canada: A Case Study with Laminated Veneer Lumber
Engineered wood products for structural use must meet minimum strength and stiffness criteria. This represents a major challenge for the industry as the mechanical properties of the wood resource are inherently variable. We report on a case study that was conducted in a laminated veneer lumber (LVL) mill in order to test the potential of an acoustic sensor to predict structural properties of the wood resource prior to processing. A population of 266 recently harvested aspen logs were segregated into three sub-populations based on measurements of longitudinal acoustic speed in wood using a hand tool equipped with a resonance-based acoustic sensor. Each of the three sub-populations were peeled into veneer sheets and graded for stiffness with an ultrasonic device. The average ultrasonic propagation time (UPT) of each subpopulation was 418, 440 and 453 microseconds for the green, blue, and red populations, respectively. This resulted in contrasting proportions of structural veneer grades, indicating that the efficiency of the forest value chain could be improved using acoustic sensors. A linear regression analysis also showed that the dynamic modulus of elasticity (MOE) of LVL was strongly related to static MOE (R2 = 0.83), which suggests that acoustic tools may be used for quality control during the production process
Multidifferential study of identified charged hadron distributions in -tagged jets in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV
Jet fragmentation functions are measured for the first time in proton-proton
collisions for charged pions, kaons, and protons within jets recoiling against
a boson. The charged-hadron distributions are studied longitudinally and
transversely to the jet direction for jets with transverse momentum 20 GeV and in the pseudorapidity range . The
data sample was collected with the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy
of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.64 fb. Triple
differential distributions as a function of the hadron longitudinal momentum
fraction, hadron transverse momentum, and jet transverse momentum are also
measured for the first time. This helps constrain transverse-momentum-dependent
fragmentation functions. Differences in the shapes and magnitudes of the
measured distributions for the different hadron species provide insights into

in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of TeV
using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5
collected by the LHCb experiment. In the system, the
state observed at the BaBar and Belle experiments is
resolved into two narrower states, and ,
whose masses and widths are measured to be where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second
systematic. The results are consistent with a previous LHCb measurement using a
prompt sample. Evidence of a new
state is found with a local significance of , whose mass and width
are measured to be and , respectively. In addition, evidence of a new decay mode
is found with a significance of
. The relative branching fraction of with respect to the
decay is measured to be , where the first
uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third originates from

integrated luminosity recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. The

measurements is . Results are consistent with the current average
of these quantities and are at a combined 1.9 standard deviations from the

La neuromodulation des racines sacrées dans les troubles urinaires réfractaires
L'objectif de ce travail est d'évaluer les résultats du traitement des troubles urinaires réfractaires par neuromodulation des racines sacrées au travers d'une analyse rétrospective de 79 dossiers. Parmi les 79 patients, 41 ont eu une implantation de stimulateur définitif au vue d'une amélioration clinique objective et subjective supérieure à 50%. 19 patients sont considérés comme des succès/ amélioration selon nos critères à 20.5 mois de recul. Le taux de complications s'élève à 70% essentiellement lié à des douleurs. 7 (17%) patients ont nécessité une révision. Multiple reprobing of Western blots after inactivation of peroxidase activity by its substrate, hydrogen peroxide
International audienceSequential detections of different proteins on Western blot save time and precious samples. The main problem concerning reprobing is that stripping buffers can unbind both the antibody and the tested antigen. An original reprobing method has been set up based on horseradish peroxidase (HRP) inhibition after enhanced chemiluminescence detection. Instead of removing previously fixed antibodies as common stripping buffers do, the HRP activity linked to the secondary antibody is irreversibly inhibited by excess of hydrogen peroxide. A 15-min incubation allows one to perform at least five different sequential detections without losing significant amounts of blotted proteins
Who Self-Weighs and What Do They Gain From It? A Retrospective Comparison Between Smart Scale Users and the General Population in England.
BACKGROUND: Digital self-monitoring, particularly of weight, is increasingly prevalent. The associated data could be reused for clinical and research purposes. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to compare participants who use connected smart scale technologies with the general population and explore how use of smart scale technology affects, or is affected by, weight change. METHODS: This was a retrospective study comparing 2 databases: (1) the longitudinal height and weight measurement database of smart scale users and (2) the Health Survey for England, a cross-sectional survey of the general population in England. Baseline comparison was of body mass index (BMI) in the 2 databases via a regression model. For exploring engagement with the technology, two analyses were performed: (1) a regression model of BMI change predicted by measures of engagement and (2) a recurrent event survival analysis with instantaneous probability of a subsequent self-weighing predicted by previous BMI change. RESULTS: Among women, users of self-weighing technology had a mean BMI of 1.62 kg/m(2) (95% CI 1.03-2.22) lower than the general population (of the same age and height) (P<.001). Among men, users had a mean BMI of 1.26 kg/m(2) (95% CI 0.84-1.69) greater than the general population (of the same age and height) (P<.001). Reduction in BMI was independently associated with greater engagement with self-weighing. Self-weighing events were more likely when users had recently reduced their BMI. CONCLUSIONS: Users of self-weighing technology are a selected sample of the general population and this must be accounted for in studies that employ these data. Engagement with self-weighing is associated with recent weight change; more research is needed to understand the extent to which weight change encourages closer monitoring versus closer monitoring driving the weight change. Effect of postprandial modulation of glucose availability: short- and long-term analysis
International audienceLow glycaemic index (LGI) foods have been proposed as potential means to decrease postprandial glucose excursions and thus to improve diabetes management. We modulated glucose availability of cereal products and thus their glycaemic index to study the metabolic effect of LGI foods on daylong glucose control acutely and in the long term following a 5-week GI intervention diet in free-living subjects. In this randomised, parallel trial, two groups of nineteen overweight subjects followed an ad libitum 5-week intervention diet in which usual starch was replaced by either LGI or high GI (HGI) starch. During the exploration days (days 1 and 36), subjects ate their assigned 13 C-labelled test breakfast (LGI or HGI), and total and exogenous glucose kinetics (using stable isotopes), postprandial concentrations of glucose, insulin, lipid profile and nutrient oxidation were assessed after the test breakfast and a standardised lunch. At day 1, LGI breakfast significantly decreased post-breakfast glycaemic response with a parallel decrease in exogenous and total glucose appearance (P, 0·05). Post-lunch and post-breakfast glycaemic responses were positively correlated (r 0·79, P,0·0001). Following the 5-week diet, difference between the groups in terms of glucose kinetics and response was maintained (no significant interaction group £ time) but tended to decrease over time for the post-breakfast glycaemic response. Post-lunch and post-breakfast glycaemic responses remained positively correlated (r 0·47, P¼ 0·004). Modulation of postprandial glucose availability at breakfast decreased plasma exogenous glucose appearance and improved glucose control at the subsequent lunch. After 5 weeks, these effects were maintained in healthy subjects but remained to be confirmed in the longer term.
