Food supplements for weight loss: risk assessment of selected impurities
This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.Nowadays, food supplements are widely consumed, often without any medical supervision. In this study, 25 food supplements for weight loss, randomly purchased from five different suppliers in the European Union, were analysed by Wavelength Dispersive X ray Fluorescence spectrometry (WDXRF). The aim of this study was the risk assessment of trace elements and the mixture of elements present in food supplements for weight loss. The obtained Hazard Index (0.11) showed no potential risk of non-carcinogenic effects to human health. However, since humans are frequently exposed by different routes and/or sources to toxic metals, the additional consumption of these products may cause potential toxicological risks that cannot be ignored. In one analysed food supplement (FS), the simultaneous presence of Pb and Mn in high concentrations was detected. In two, FS chromium concentrations were above the reference daily dose. Unconformities were detected between the labelled and the detected values, which emphasises the misinformation of labels. This highlights the need for a deeper surveillance of food supplements.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The Associação Protectora dos Diabéticos de Portugal (APDP) is the reference institution of diabetes nationwide. It was recognized in 2009 as the first Center for Diabetes Education by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). The Diabetes School appeared in 2011 confirming the evolution and increasing stakes in training courses that exist in this institution since 1974. School courses are intended for two major groups, health professional teams and people with diabetes and their families. The courses for professionals promote the sharing of know-how of the association with professional trainers and health professionals interested in deepening their knowledge in the area and have an ative role in education for diabetes throughout the country. The courses for people with diabetes and their families have the objetive of promoting knowledge to provide greater autonomy to those living with diabetes, by providing them with useful lessons for the daily management of this pathology.
This research project mainly aims at improving the quality of training courses for professionals, acting beyond the instructors of these courses. Through the analysis of the training needs felt by them in order to promote training activities aimed at filling these gaps. Thus, this project work focuses initially on the analysis of training needs of the trainers of courses for professionals, which used methodologies such as semidirective interview and questionnaire. Subsequently, the project ends up with the presentation of two proposals to respond to some practical and objetive training needs detected.
The APDP since the beginning of the project considered relevant and recognized it as a huge practical utility in the School of Diabetes. All requests were quickly granted by those responsible, and these also contributed to greater adherence in responses to questionnaires, motivating trainers to do so. It was presented to APDP, two plans for training the trainers. The training proposals were well accepted within the organization and it was immediately launched an implementation schedule for one of them and a budget request for the other one
pai no pós-parto?”.
A Mother-to-Infant
presença e participação paterna no pós-parto e o pós-parto imediato, conduziu à
This Internship Report (RE) integrates the Internship Curricular Unit Program
with Report of the 11th Master's Course in Maternal Health and Obstetrics Nursing. In
addition to the proposed investigation process, this report accounts a self-reflection on
my learning journey and skills development process, to obtain both, the titles of
Specialist Nurse in Maternal and Obstetric Health Nursing and Master's degree.
The changes that took place in hospital units, due to the pandemic caused by
the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus refer
exceptional prevention-control measures implemented by the Direção Geral de Saúde
(DGS) to minimize the risk of transmission of SARS-CoV 2 infection in hospital
environment. These preventive measures created a new dynamic in the daily context
of maternity services, making it impossible for the father to experience and participate
in the first moments of life of his Newborn.
Subsequently, this research process in the internship context intended to
answer the following starting question: "How is the transition to fatherhood
affected by the absence of the father's follow-up in the postpartum period?"
Considering the problem under study, the Nursing Theory that supported and
guided this IR, as well as my care practice, was the Conceptual Model of Afaf Meleis
focused on the concept of transition. Throughout my training process, as well as in the
making of this report, the methodology used was based on Evidence-Based Practice
and Scoping Review (SR), in line with the methodology proposed by the Joanna Briggs
Institute (JBI) (2021). Using the EBSCOhost platform, the research was limited to the
choice of three databases, with the aim of mapping all the relevant scientific evidence
on the subject.
A Data Survey Instrument, was applied to one hundred and six male parents
who experienced the transition to parenthood in a pandemic context, with the purpose
of understanding if the process of emotional involvement between the father and the
NB was affected by the father's absence during the postpartum period, using the
Mother-toInfant Bonding Scale (Taylor et al. 2005), Portuguese version of Figueiredo
et al. (2005).
The articles resulting from the SR showed that parents were increasingly
seeking training as caregivers, in order to strengthen their involvement in the
education process, not only through the provision of direct care, but also indirect care,
such as the establishment of an affectionate relationship with the NB. This paradigm
shift equips men not only to provide care to the NB, but also to provide emotional and
physical support to the puerperal woman. The Mother-toInfant Bonding Scale (Taylor
et al. 2005), Portuguese version extended by Figueiredo et al. (2005), recognised that
fathers did not or only slightly developed emotions related to "Negative Bonding"
towards their NB.
The content analysis carried out showed that, by encouraging the paternal
presence and participation in the postnatal and immediate postnatal periods, the
Specialist Nurse in Maternal and Obstetric Health Nursing promoted a facilitating
environment for the transition to parenthood. As an obstacle to the promotion of a
facilitating environment for the transition to inpatient paternity, the causes were
attributed to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic situation
Operating Unit on Policy-Driven Electronic Governance, UNU-EGOV, sediada na
Deste modo, a plataforma proposta
Currently, the fast population growth in cities demands intelligent and innovative
solutions capable of answer to the increasing given the increasing demand for
electricity, water, food, transport and other services. In order to achieve this goal
companies, organizations, financial partners, public authorities and governments, i.e.
all stakeholders, must work together to produce new smart products and services
that contribute affectively to livable and sustainable cities, called Smart Cities. The
smart cities are becoming a priority in the strategies of several countries around the
world. They are seen as the new reindustrialization era , which will allow the reinvention
of cities at all levels: economic, environmental, mobility, governance, social
and quality of live. The Smart City concept requires a set of skills and an ability to
integrate solutions and systems in different areas, such as energy networks, mobility,
buildings, public services and Information and Communications Technologies (ICT).
The projects in Smart Cities aim to solve urban problems through innovative and
intelligent solutions. Many of these solutions are obtained through the use of Business
Intelligence systems, that give support to the decision-making process and to
the business management, enabling analysis of a large amounts of data more efficiently
and quickly. The advantages offered by Business Intelligence systems are being
harnessed by public and private sectors.
This dissertation was developed in collaboration with Operating Unit on PolicyDriven
Electronic Governance, UNU-EGOV, hosted in University of Minho and located
in Guimarães. The goal of this dissertation was to develop an online plataform
able to analyse and store the smart cities initiatives. The platform allows to collect
data about the smart cities initiatives through out an online form. The data collected
is processed and treated using open-source OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) technologies
for producing aggregated statistics and maps regarding smart cities. The
proposed platform intends to be an useful tool for policy-makers and managers, which
want to implement new smart cities initiatives and need some guidance to run it
Diabetes is a metabolic chronic disease characterized for high levels of glucose in the blood system; this occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or when it doesn’t produce enough.
When speaking about the adherence to the drug regimen, this is one of the priority health areas that nurses should be focused on promoting and preventing, doing their interventions based on scientific evidences.
Therefore, the objectives outlined are to understand if: the person with diabetes mellitus forgets to take the pills/insulin for diabetes, if the person with diabetes is careless with the timing of taking the pills/insulin for diabetes, if the person with diabetes stops taking the drugs or insulin for diabetes in order to feel better, if the person with diabetes stops taking the drugs or insulin for diabetes in order to feel worse, if the person with diabetes takes (by own initiative) the pills or insulin in higher doses, if the person with diabetes stops taking the pills or insulin because they let it end, if the person with diabetes stopped taking pills or insulin for diabetes for some reason other than the doctor's reccommendation.
This was a descriptive, quantitative and cross - sectional study that meant to verify if there was an adherence to the drug regimen by the interviewed. The population was composed by adults and elderly people with diabetes mellitus (not institutionalized), from the Porto district. The sampling technique used was the Snowball, in which individuals included in our sample invited new participants from their network of friends and surroundings; as so, the sample grew. The inclused criteria are diagnosed with DM, lives in Porto district, and also voluntarily participated in the study; all confirmed to have a preserved cognitive capacity to respond to the questionnaire.
In order to evaluate the level of adherence to the drug regimen in individuals, the instrument “Medida de Adesão aos Tratamentos (MAT)” - developed and validated for the Portuguese population by Delgado and Lima in 2001 - was applied. The results obtained in this study demonstrated that adults and the elderly are adhere to the drug regimen.N/

Automatic determination of pauses in speech for classification of stuttering disorder
An algorithm to automatically identify segments of silence or speech is presented. The algorithm was
developed to measure the silence periods in spontaneous and read speech. These silence periods are
one of the parameters used to know the degree of severity of stuttered speech. For this purpose the three
longer disfluent events (pauses or other disfluent events) and also the percentage of silence are useful.
The algorithm is based on the evaluation of the energy and the zero crossing rate of the signal compared
to the threshold values previously determined in silence. One experiment with eight subjects is described
using the Stuttering Severity Instrument for Children and Adults – SSI and the percentage of silence in
speech. It was concluded that the percentage of silence is good enough to separate stuttered from the
normal speech but alone is not capable of measuring the degree of severity of the stuttered speech.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Genetic biomarkers in chronic myeloid leukemia: What have we learned so far?
UIDP/04378/2020 UIDB/04378/2020 LA/P/0140/2020Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) is a rare malignant proliferative disease of the hematopoietic system, whose molecular hallmark is the Philadelphia chromosome (Ph). The Ph chromosome originates an aberrant fusion gene with abnormal kinase activity, leading to the buildup of reactive oxygen species and genetic instability of relevance in disease progression. Several genetic abnormalities have been correlated with CML in the blast phase, including chromosomal aberrations and common altered genes. Some of these genes are involved in the regulation of cell apoptosis and proliferation, such as the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), tumor protein p53 (TP53), or Schmidt-Ruppin A-2 proto-oncogene (SRC); cell adhesion, e.g., catenin beta 1(CTNNB1); or genes associated to TGF-β, such as SKI like proto-oncogene (SKIL), transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGFB1) or transforming growth factor beta 2 (TGFB2); and TNF-α pathways, such as Tumor necrosis factor (TNFA) or Nuclear factor kappa B subunit 1 (NFKB1). The involvement of miRNAs in CML is also gaining momentum, where dysregulation of some critical miRNAs, such as miRNA-451 and miRNA-21, which have been associated to the molecular modulation of pathogenesis, progression of disease states, and response to therapeutics. In this review, the most relevant genomic alterations found in CML will be addressed.publishersversionpublishe
metodologia estatística usual, no programa SPSS.
