Treating De novo metastatic castration sensitive prostate cancer with visceral metastases: an evolving issue

    Get PDF
Visceral metastasis is widely considered a prognostic factor for overall survival of men with metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC) and has been historically managed with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). More recently, this therapeutic scenario has been enriched by the possibility to integrate ADT with chemotherapy or novel androgen-signalling–targeted inhibitors. In order to define the effect of chemotherapy/androgen-signalling–targeted inhibitors plus ADT, we performed a pooled analysis on patients with mCSPC and visceral metastases revealing that survival was significantly improved in patients without visceral metastasis (HR=0.64 95%CI: 0.56-0.74; p<0.01) compared with men with visceral metastases (HR=0.68; 95%CI: 0.51-0.91; p<0.01). Although several limitations do not allow to draw definitive conclusions, our analysis confirms the efficacy of chemotherapy/androgen-signalling–targeted inhibitors in combination with ADT also in mCSPC with visceral metastases. In the absence of specific randomized controlled trials, symptoms, toxicity, cost, patients’ preference and clinical experience should guide the decision to add chemotherapy or androgen receptor-targeted therapy to ADT in patients with visceral metastases from mCSPC

A massive record of the rare ‘mole crab’ Albunea carabus (Decapoda: Anomura: Hippoidea) along the sandy coasts of Catania

Amongst the Crustacea, the Decapoda (which include crayfish, crabs, lobsters, prawns, and shrimp) represent a highly diverse group adapted to many different marine and freshwater environments. Members of the Superfamily Hippoidea are commonly referred to as mole crabs. This group includes three families of which one, Albuneidae, is represented in the Mediterranean basin by only one species, the mole crab, Albunea carabus (Linnaeus, 1758).peer-reviewe

An overview of the clinical use of cabozantinib in the treatment of advanced non-clear-cell renal cell carcinoma (NCCRCC)

    Get PDF
Patients diagnosed with non-clear renal cell carcinoma have often been excluded from clinical trials due to the shortage of treatments available, the low incidence of tumours with non-clear histology, and the corresponding diversity of intrinsic molecular features. This approach led to a knowledge gap in finding the optimal treatment for patients diagnosed with non-clear cell renal carcinoma. Cabozantinib, a potent multiple tyrosine kinase receptor inhibitor, has been recently investigated in patients with non-clear cell histologies of renal cell cancer. In this review, we have summarized available data on the use of cabozantinib in non-clear renal cell carcinoma.</p

New taxonomical and biological observations on Jujubinus seguenzae (Gastropoda: Vetigastropoda: Trochidae)

The family Trochidae, commonly known as top-snails or top-shells, has recently received a lot of attention, especially the representatives of the genus Jujubinus. Eighteen extant taxa of this genus occur in the Mediterranean. It is however still unclear whether some of these should be classified as separate species or subspecies. Jujubinus seguenzae Ghisotti & Melone, 1975 is among the taxa of uncertain classification. This taxon is endemic to the Strait of Messina, where it is likely to inhabit shallow waters, although only one living specimen has been documented. This species is currently considered a nomen dubium due to the scant information available in the literature and its morphological resemblance to J. striatus (L., 1758). Photographs of the type material of this latter species, in the Linnean collection, were examined. Although it was clear that this taxon includes more than one single species, none was attributable to J. seguenzae.peer-reviewe

Studies for a 72.75 MHz Four Vanes CW-RFQ for ECOS-LINCE Project

Presented at the XXXIV Mazurian Lakes Conference on Physics, Piaski, Poland, September 6–13, 2015.The ECOS is considering the construction of a new facility for accelerating high intensity stable beams with energies at and above the Coulomb barrier, the LINCE light and heavy ion accelerator. This facility could be based on a normal conducting CW-RFQ and a superconducting linac, working at 72.75 MHz. This paper presents a design study for the RFQ system which is able to achieve 500 keV/u output for A=Q = 7 ions in only 5 m length

The impact of pictorial health warnings (PHW) on tobacco packages: the first quasi-experimental field trial after the implementation of the law in Italy

Background. The aim of the study was to evaluate in the Italian smokers, the effects of implementation of the law about Pictorial Health Warnings (PHWs) on tobacco products. Methods. A quasi-experimental longitudinal design was conducted between 2016 and 2017. The data were collected before (pre-PHW/Wave 1) and after (post-PHW/Wave 2) the implementation of the law. The adopted questionnaire included impact of advertisement (Label Impact Index, LII), quitting behavior and knowledge of tobacco related diseases.Results. 455 respondents completed both the Waves. 7.7% of smokers declared to have stopped smoking in Wave 2 and 29% of these declared the PHWs as one of the reasons to quit. The knowledge of tobacco related diseases was significantly (p <0.001) increased from Wave 1 to Wave 2 (58% versus 72%), similarly the LII (mean = 26.9, SD = 16.7 and mean = 40.4, SD = 16.2).Conclusion. Tobacco addiction is a problem that needs to be addressed from different angles. PHWs confirm their complementary role as a support for smokers along with other strategies such as text warnings and the tobacco quit line of the Istituto Superiore di SanitĂ  (Italian National Institute of Health) reported on the packages. Nonetheless, over the years these measures have been not enough and policy makers should consider more strategies synergistically acting in the fight against tabagism.

Climate, host and geography shape insect and fungal communities of trees.

Non-native pests, climate change, and their interactions are likely to alter relationships between trees and tree-associated organisms with consequences for forest health. To understand and predict such changes, factors structuring tree-associated communities need to be determined. Here, we analysed the data consisting of records of insects and fungi collected from dormant twigs from 155 tree species at 51 botanical gardens or arboreta in 32 countries. Generalized dissimilarity models revealed similar relative importance of studied climatic, host-related and geographic factors on differences in tree-associated communities. Mean annual temperature, phylogenetic distance between hosts and geographic distance between locations were the major drivers of dissimilarities. The increasing importance of high temperatures on differences in studied communities indicate that climate change could affect tree-associated organisms directly and indirectly through host range shifts. Insect and fungal communities were more similar between closely related vs. distant hosts suggesting that host range shifts may facilitate the emergence of new pests. Moreover, dissimilarities among tree-associated communities increased with geographic distance indicating that human-mediated transport may serve as a pathway of the introductions of new pests. The results of this study highlight the need to limit the establishment of tree pests and increase the resilience of forest ecosystems to changes in climate
